Ok, But Hardly a Palace

After an overnight flight, I requested an early (11am) check-in and was refused. Don't expect 4 star treatment at this hotel, which I guess is just a 3 star anyway. When I finally was allowed to check in, I was put into a room with no heat. The building engineer was sent up and told me he could bring a portable heater up. I requested another room instead, and was accommodated.The location of this hotel is excellent, but I can't understand why this property does not pay more attention to detail. A coat of paint on the many scuff marks in the hallways and room walls would help. The staff seems to just "go through the motions." The concierge doesn't actually work for the hotel, but is outsourced.I suppose I'd stay here again, but at least I'd know what to expect next time.

Well, I reviewed all the reviews here before I made my trip to London to stay at the Strand Palace Hotel and I must say was very tentative.
But, once I got there, checked in, and made my way to the room, I was put at ease. I'd say this hotel is above average for the price. I had a single room (single bed, small desk with chair, decent size bathroom) and it certainly was the size of a shoebox, however, I found the room to be clean and acceptable for my purposes of simply having a good, safe, clean room in a GREAT location. The bed was OK, not great, but decent enough for me to get a good night sleep in. For ventilation, I simply opened the window. Be sure to crack your window when you take a shower or else your entire room will steam up! (I said the room was small!).
The hotel was easy to get to from the airport. I took the tube using the Piccadilly line from Heathrow directly to the Covent Garden stop (about a 45-50 min. trip). From there it was a 5 min. walk to the hotel.
For the price (I paid $95US a night), I'd say the hotel is outstanding.
For those that want luxury features, you might want to consider elsewhere (the Savoy is right across the street). But, for those who want decent accommodation to have a reasonable place to sleep and park your stuff AND be in an outstanding location (Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Covent Garden ALL within walking distance) this is the place. Check in was easy and friendly (I asked for a double bed but they said they were all out...however, that was OK with me). Concierge was helpful. A couple of late-night bars in the hotel. Free continental breakfast was decent, not great, but, hey, free is free. Walking down the hallways didn't give me any "dirty" or "ugly" impressions...just seemed like a decent Ramada Inn or something comparable.
If price and location are your top priorities, this is your hotel. I would go there again.

Shady little Dump

I have been to London many times and travel very frequently. Granted I generally choose top of the line hotels, but when I found myself going to London alone last January, I figured save some cash on the hotel and take a side trip to Amsterdam. What a mistake. My room was literally a shoebox. Stained ceilings, freezing cold, and pretty smelly. When I checked in at 7am they said a regular room would not be ready until 6pm and after my 6 hour flight, I needed a rest. They offered me a room right away on the smoking level but forgot to tell me that the cigar chain smoking king lived in the walls. When I walked through the ugly swinging door into the corridor I nearly died then and there from the thick cigar smoke that seemed to linger in the hallway no matter what time it was. The room service sucked, the lobby was packed with tourist groups and the phone rates were BRUTAL in comparisson to most hotels.
Granted, its proximity to Covent Garden was great, but other than that, this hotel sucked and you'll find me back at the Ritz on my next visit.

Not so bad really

November 7, 2003-just returned from first visit to London and stayed at the Strand Palace Hotel. Read some of the bad reviews here after I had booked and was somewhat nervous until I got there. Wanted to put up my review right away. It really isn't that bad. Was on the 7th floor. Yes, there are lots of doors in the hallways, but they are fire doors for your safety. Can't gripe about that. Was in a room with 2 single beds.
Was about 20 by 20 with a bathroom, which was bright and roomy. Sure the hallways are a tad beat up, but they have tons of people through there banging their luggage against the walls. The room got stuffy, even in November, but 1 of the two windows opened and it was fine. The continental breakfast was ok-lots of juice, croissants, other rolls, sliced meats and cheeses and fresh fruits. Everything was fresh and plentiful. It was enough to hold you until lunch. You could get the full breakfast-but when you are sightseeing it isn't helpful to stuff your face. The lobby does get crowded with tour groups, but was never uncomfortable. Room had hairdryer, desk, tv with alarm clock, lots of space to put clothes. It's a discount hotel folks-not the Ritz. If you are going to London to see London, it's great! So close to everything.
Tube stops nearby make easy access to the sites. There are drug stores nearby, as well as many ATMs. Just remember-you get what you pay for.
If you want luxury, pay for it. If you are happy with clean, comfortable and convenient this is a good place to stay. Keep in mind, some folks are never happy so take these reviews lightly. I went expecting the worst-and was not displeased at all. Well, I couldn't get the stupid telephone to work even with repeated calls to the operator.
The pay phones in the lobby work great and they are cheaper. There are also tons of places to eat around the hotel from cheap to quite expensive. We ate in the hotel for 1 meal and it was good-buffet style and the food was plentiful and hot. I don't know if I'd eat in the hotel again, but was nice to try once when we just couldn't walk any more. I hope your stay will be as nice as mine was.

I returned to the Strand Palace after several years absence (because the rack rates got silly for this standard of hotel) and was generally pleased. As other reviewers have noted, the location is terrific, the best in London. Walk to Covent Garden, St. Paul's, Westminster, Trafalger Square, The National Gallery and the West End. Big hotel with 700 rooms which vary widely in size. Slightly dumpy. But I have always had a good mattresses, clean sheets and the plumbing, while old, has never failed. Smallish elevators get clogged. Ride up, take the stairs down. Tour groups clog the lobby and overwhelm the front desk. Timing is everything. Used to include the best buffet English breakfast but no longer. Continental b'fast decidedly blah. No A/C in regularly priced rooms so avoid in summer heat. If you get a great rate and don't demand more of a hotel than a clean bed and working plumbing and don't spend a lot of time in the room, this is a great choice. Otherwise you might look elsewhere. I'd give it a two really but upgrade to three because of the A1 location. Executive rooms are available but I have never seen one. They cost about 50% more.

Do yourself a favor and do not stay in this place. It has old depressing dark rooms that make you wish you had stayed somewhere else. Thanks to another review, I stayed in 2HydeParkSquare. Much nicer, brighter and great decoration and location at 20% higher price. Well worth it. Happy trips.

I stayed here for one night on a recent business trip. Location is fantastic, nearby to tube and in a good, safe area. The bedroom (single) was the smallest room I have ever stayed in! It really was tiny, single bed and not much room for anything else. However it was clean and well maintained. I paid approximately £80 and don't really think this hotel is worth the money. A friend had previously stayed in a double room which apparently was an ok size. This is a "basic" hotel, no frills. Staff were helpful and friendly. I don't think I'd stay here again though - there are better value hotels for the same price.

The excellent location is the main thing this hotel has to offer. The hotel caters mostly to tour groups and tour package users, so don't expect luxury or attentive service. My single room was clean, small and plain, with a recently renovated (and nice) bathroom. Hallways are a bit of a odd rabbit warren of swinging doors, and different passageways. Decent, but not exciting, continental breakfast; room service menu form to order delivery of breakfast to the room in the morning failed to appear after first day. I got a good deal as part of a package, so I was happy, but others might not be. I would not like to stay here in hot weather; there is no air conditioning, and the layout guarantees that air circulation will not be very good.

I stayed at the Strand Palace hotel for 1 night and it was 1 night too long, the lobby was busy and crowded there was no personal touches. The rooms are not cheap at this hotel so you expect the room to be of a high quality, my room was very small and soooooooo hot it was horrible!
The staff do not appear to know what they are doing and can be quite rude and unhelpful. We asked for room service for our breakfast and it did not arrive at all, in the end we gave up and went out for breakfast. Being british I must say it was embarrasing to go to our capital city and stay in such a terrible hotel, I dreed to think what foreign travellers think of us after a stay at this horrible place. The location is wonderful. I would not stay at the Strand Palace hotel again even if the room was free, if you are looking for a good hotel in London.......... LOOK ELSEWHERE!!!

Location is perfect the rooms are not. So small and hot that I dreaded going back to the room everynight. For about 60 yto 80 pds more there is a nice hotel across the street the Savoy spend the extra dough and stay away from this old dump.
Top Local Tips for London
close to subway - charing cross, covent gardens, Leceister Square, Picadilly it is very close to subway - use it, its cheap and covent gardens is a short walk away.....as well as Leicester Square - whichis known for it's great night clubs and casinos, from there it is a short walk to Picadilly Circus and Oxford Circus
Planning Do your research and know exactly what you want to see or visit before arriving. Make yourself familiar with an area map small enough to carry in the pocket. Get an underground day ticket if you're visiting several attractions in one day
The Ivy Forget the hype - the Ivy is a comfortable restaurant with a menu of food you (I) really want to try. To get a table try for an early slot. I booked a week before for a post matinee meal at 6.30 - no problem. And the 2 hours we were given was more than enough to finish comfortably.
