Good Location but Poor Rooms
from HelpfulTravelerI agree with reviewers complimenting the public areas and the convenience to the airport. The rooms, however, are very worn. The bed and pillows were comfortable, the linens clean, the bathroom was renovated but without the separate shower found in upscale facilities.
I was first offered a King-sized room on the 8th floor. The public hallway was depressing, the walls badly scuffed. Room carpeting was frayed, worn, and separating from the wall. Wooden furniture was water stained and had separating/raised veneer. Upholstered furniture was stained. A/C did not work so I returned to the desk for reassignment.
I was then offered a Double-sized room on the 1st floor. The public hallway apparantly had a more recent paint job but was not inviting. As on the upper floor, the wooden furniture was water stained and had separating/raised veneer. Upholstered furniture was stained. No iron or ironing board unless you call Housekeeping. Wake-up call never materialized.
Do not stay at this hotel for full price.; the rooms are worth $75 max through Priceline.
Well worth it
from skirkpatrickWe stayed in a pleasant room overlooking the atrium on the seventh floor. Its true that you cannot open the windows but this was not a problem for us. We all went for a swim and found the pool and gym to be clean and well maintained. We had a very pleasant meal in the podium level carvery restaurant. We slept well and did not hear any aircraft noise at all.
I (stupidly) left my camera in the safe when we checked out in a hurry but I called the hotel a few hours later and spoke to a very kind and effecient lady (Bernadette) from Housekeeping who found my camera and arranged for it to be picked up later.
Considering the very close proximity to the North terminal and the quality of the hotel it represents very good value.
A full service hotel that needs to be renovated
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe lobby is very impressive. It appears that this is the only part that has been renovated. It reminds you of a Hyatt where the rooms face the lobby and go up. The hallways are bright white and blue and appear to be worn. The rooms were standard rooms. The rooms were fairly large and consited of two twin beds, a large work station, minibar, two sitting chairs, etc. The carpet makes the room feel very old because of the 70s or 80s decour. The bathroom was large but had old fictures. Also, the room walls are thin. You can hear people in the hall and next door. Overall, I would stay here again. I would not pay 109 GBP per night. Make sure you priceline this hotel.
Time to Renovate
from 87The Meridien needs to be renovated, especially the rooms. The room air conditioning/heating systems are very antiquated. In the winter I have to heat the room with steam from the shower. In the summer, I have to request a fan from guest services. (The windows do not open)
Be sure to constantly check the Meridien's room rates on their web site. I have seen rates go from 190GBP to 99GBP over several weeks so if you stay here, make a cancellable reservation and keep watching for rate reductions.
would stay at this hotel again
from A TripAdvisor MemberWhat choice do you have really?
from A TripAdvisor MemberStay here only for the convenience of an early a.m. flight
from RytherQuality-wise the rooms and baths are comparable to a Holiday Inn in the US with a marginally more hip design. The service however, from check-in to check-out to dinner in the hotel's chinese restaurant was grudgingly polite or indifferent. From a check-in at 12 pm with no bellmen to be found, to incorrect information given by the front desk, to a meal in the Chinese restaurant with the manager screaming and cursing at an employee within full earshot of the entire restaurant while Christmas Carols played in September in the lobby, it was all just bad...bad...bad....That said, if I had an early a.m. flight at Gatwick's north terminal I'd be forced to stay again.
Time for refurbishment?
from A TripAdvisor MemberMy overiding impression of this hotel is it is now time for a refurbishment. The room felt "worn". The carpet looked old, as did the bathroom.
The bed linen, 100% cotton, again was starting to look past its best. The air conditioning controls were two dials; one that twisted between "hotter" or "colder" and the other that controlled the fan speed. Neither of these controls bore any relation to the setting selected. Outside the door to my room the carpet was stuck down across the entire width of the corridor with tape.
One other minor gripe was the view from the room. The last time I stayed I had a room with a view over the countryside, one of two views promised in the hotel details. (The other view being of the airport). This time the view was of the inside of the hotel. It was an internal wundow looking down over the central atrium of the hotel, included in the view was check in the restaurant and bar.
On the positive side the staff were helpful and very efficient. Check in and out was painless.
When all is said and done, average value for money (£119 for the night). What can't be beaten is the excellent location. Worth while for that alone.
it s not all roses!!!!
from ricjackaldue to the hotel being overbooked on saturday pm 24th july2004 and our arriving at 10mins to midnight and with a reservation reconfirmed not 3 hrs previous in malta, we were astonished to be told by receiption staff that our family room had been let several hous pervious and that all they had was a twin room for 5 of us!!!!
Being that the children were dropping around us we had no option but to take this room on the understanding that at least there would be beding supplied for the young ones and youv guess it!!despite numerous calls to reception, duty mgr etc nothing was offered until 7am!! also no tea or coffee in the room, and a furry dish of something left in the mini-bar oh and no toilet rolls!!!all this comfort for £180!!! The day duty mgr was more understanding and waived all charges but considering that we had reconfirmed the room and our c/card was debited (we later found we d been charged £180+vat) i have since returned my moments card and despite several letters from the gen mgr, am still waiting for my £220!! so all you people staying at le meridien have a good time and enjoy your stay just beware checking in after 10pm.
Not up to Meridien Standards
from A TripAdvisor MemberTop Local Tips for London
Avoiding costly hotel restaurant bill Rather than using the 24 hour room service, why not try the Marks & Spencer Simply Food hall, just around the corner in the departure area, which is also open 24 hours and does hot drinks.
Day Trip For anyone here for a day and thinking of taking a day trip, a good option is Brighton. Having been to London many times, we chose this alternative during our stay here. Brighton is a 30-45 minute train ride (with frequent service) from the Gatwick terminal. The town has an interesting pier, beaches, traditional pubs and ethnic restaurants. We found it to be a charming area that was a great way to spend 4-5 hours.
Easy Access to Gatwick You simply follow the signs to the North Terminal (Take the free tram), turn left and follow the signs to the airport. It's very convenient!
