Excellent Stay @ Darlington

Our stay at Darlington was a great pleasure. The room was very clean and nicely decorated, it was not too small and had an excellent shower. The only negative thing about the room was that it faced the street and since there is no airconditioning and we had to keep our windows open, we were forced to put up with loud noise from the street. The service at the hotel was extremely friendly and they went out of their way to make sure that all of our needs were met. The breakfast was also great. The location of the hotel is another bonus, it is a few blocks from Hyde Park and Paddington Station and there are a few decent restaurants in walking distance of the hotel. All in all, this hotel was a great bargain at about $150 per night and I would definitely stay there again.
Great Family Hotel

This was a great find. We had a huge room, located in the back so it was quiet for our family of 4. Traveling with 2 young kids and only in town for the last 2 nites of our 16 day trip thru Europe. The family room had a queen, twin (for our 3 yr old) and a cot (pack-n-play) for our 1 yr old. The breakfast was great, the location is excellent. It was a quick 5 min walk to paddington station where the heathrow express train takes you to the terminal without stops in 15-20 minutes. We had great Indian take-out the first nite, there are endless food choices in this area and Hyde Park is a huge bonus for those of you who run or have kids or just want to enjoy the gardens and paths. There was a children's park and they were delighted with the Italien fountains. The frig in room is also a big plus with kids. The hallways are difficult to navigate with our double stroller, but compeltely do-able. For the value we would stay here again in a minute. It was 210 pounds for 2 nights including all taxes, fees, and breakfast. This hotel looks like nothing special from the outside being located in a row of townhouse hotels, but is a gem inside. Nothing posh, very straight forward, but a great value. PS no A/C. But a fan and windows

Our family of four (with 2 teenage girls) booked two rooms for three nights at the Darlington based on the reviews on this web site. The hotel was very helpful in getting two adjacent, though not connecting rooms and all of our contact with the hotel prior to arriving was just fine.
We arrived in the evening via the Heathrow shuttle at Paddington and walked the three blocks to the hotel. Even toting medium sized wheelie bags, it's not a bad trek, only about 5 minutes. We found the rooms to be clean and adequately furnished (very smoke-free, too). The girls' room with two twin-sized beds was probably a better deal than the room with the smallish and hard full-size bed for my wife and me. If you can get a queen, by all means do it. The bathrooms were very clean and the showers, as others have written, have plenty of water pressure. However, the strange thing was that the floors in our rooms creaked with almost every step. I don't know if this was peculiar to our rooms (202 and 203). It was a bit annoying at first, then it became kind of funny. It could have been worse. It could have been the bed.
The breakfast room is in the basement and cheerful enough. There's a bar with cereals, juices, prunes, coffee, etc. and on top of that you can order up a hot breakfast. But it's an English breakfast, of course, which means a couple of overcooked eggs, toast, cooked tomatoes, well-done sausage or bacon. Add or subtract at your option.
Security at the hotel and in the surrounding neighborhood seemed very good. We felt safe at all times.
The location is quite good. There are many small restaurants and pubs between Paddington Station and the hotel, making it convenient to get a quick bite. There are also about 20 hotels in that block of Sussex Gardens and while they all looked fine from the outside, the Darlington looked to be the about the best. If you run to get your exercise, Hyde Park is 2 minutes away, and you can lap it in 1/2 an hour or so. But the biggest convenience is being so close to the tube at Paddington and the bus lines as well.
Overall, while not deluxe, the hotel is clean, convenient, secure and affordable (by London standards), but we might still scout around for something better next time. Watch out for the creaky floors.

The Darlington Hyde Park was wonderful. Not full of frills but very clean and nice staff. The location was great, right next to the Paddington Station where we were able to just hop on the tube at our convenience. Furthermore, the Heathrow Express went right out of Paddington which is an extra plus. The area was clean and we felt safe. Also when we arrived we were up-graded to a suite with no extra charge. Thank you Darlington….we are coming back next April!!

This hotel was perfect for our family of four (2 s, 2 teens). We booked two rooms through visithotels---for about $150 each and the staff accomodated our request to have the rooms on the same hallway. The rooms were clean, good size (for London), had full bathrooms in them and a safe in the closet. The beds were comfortable and the breakfast (included) was fantastic. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It was a little warm in the rooms, but there were fans available. It was quiet and having an elevator was great. The location is very convenient near Paddington Station which connects to the main underground lines and the Heathrow Express which gets you to the airport in 15 minutes. It's a three block walk so if you have a lot of luggage, it can seem difficult. Very glad I researched so many hours to find this hotel. It made our stay so enjoyable.

We recently spent three nights at the Darlington. The nearness to Paddington Station alone would have sold us on this hotel, but the excellent breakfast and the cleanliness of the rooms were outstanding as well. I am not a frequent European traveler but I don't think you would find more value for the money anywhere in London.
Quiet and Comfortable

I chose this Hotel after reading the reports in this web site. It was our first trip outside Australia so I wanted somewhere quite central but not to expensive. I was told that most hotels in London(expect the top ones) have small rooms, grumpy and unhelpful staff , and showers with no water pressure. Well what a suprise, the staff were great, the rooms were small but we could move around quite freely, they were very clean and quiet
and the shower was as good as we have back home. Also it was just a very short walk to Paddington Station. We would certainly stay here when we return to the UK. Thank you to all the Darlington Hyde Park staff for making our stay in London so comfortable and relaxing.

If you simply want a place to sleep at night that is pretty clean, secure and well located, this is a good hotel. While the service upon arrival was good, and the staff friendly, the contact over the phone was frustrating. First, when my husband called, we were told no double room (for 65#s) was available for our dates, only a studio for 120#s. This response was so fast there was no way they checked the computer. I, suspicious of this response, called the next day, and a double room was available for 75#s. Ok fine, we took it. I really wanted to stay here, based on the price and reviews here.
Then I called back the day before we were leaving. I was researching a restaurant for our anniversary night during our stay. They said why don't you just get our advice once you arrive. Well, if I wanted to do that, I would not have called, would I? This was a big deal for us, and I wanted our night to be special, so I had to research the restaurant on the net. I was not satisfied with their response. I wanted to research the restaurant in advance, and make sure I could get a reservation. They didn't grasp the concept apparently.
Once we arrived, we were impressed by the security. You have to be buzzed in or use a room key. Then there is another door to get to the rooms which requires a key. Our room, 100, overlooked the breakfast area atrium, and had a small balcony. I am not sure any others did. The room was pretty quiet at night.
The room was clean and tastefully decorated, tea and coffee were provided, and several tv channels besides Auntie BBC, including German MTV, which was fun. There were tall ceilings and moulding which classed it up a bit. The only complaints I have on the room were the bed was too soft and the mattress thin, and the sparkling tub had a thick black hair in it. Why would you scrub it til it sparkles then leave a thick black hair? I was a bit disappointed. Oh, and the tub was perfect for a five year old to stretch out in, it was about three feet long. The shortest I have ever seen.
The breakfast was good full English.
The housekeeping was a big disappointment. We had not had much sleep, and woke up early to go to Portobello Road. So we needed a nap in the afternoon to rest up for our anniversary celebrations that night. The room service knocked when I was trying to nap, and I told them no thanks. I went to sleep again and an hour later they knocked. This time I had to tell them three times before they understood, No, NO NO I don't want any towels. Then as I am just drifting off again they CALL on THE PHONE! Do you want any TOWELS? NO! for the third time. If they called or knocked one more time I was going to have to get nasty. Fortunately the towel harassment stopped.
Oh, and if you are going to London, and are counting on the tube Circle or District lines on the weekend, DON'T. We missed our long awaited Jack the Ripper Tour, though we left plenty early, because half of the tube is out of order on weekends for twelve more weeks. I wish we had known sooner. I hope this helps save you from an experience like the ruined anniversary celebration we had.
Overall for the price, this hotel is good, especially for London from what I understand. I would recommend it if you don't mind small disappointments and are willing to put up with mediocre service to save a few bucks.

lovely quiet , clean, even elegant room for two. Stayed only one night (alas) in April, 04, during our busy London week. Arrived late on the Heathrow Express, and walked from Paddington Station in about five minutes. The Conservatory Breakfast Room was delightful and the complimentary full English Breakfast served was excellent, plentiful and as ordered.
Both the night and day desk staff were helpful with directions and maps. A lovely interlude! Would stay there in a heartbeat and the price through an online search was exceptional (56 GBP) on a Friday night. Don't hesitate to book this gem.

We just returned from a two night stay at the Darlington. It was a very clean and basic hotel. The staff were friendly and welcoming. When we had a trouble with the toilet in our room, we reported it to the desk as we went down to breakfast. By the time we finished breakfast it had been fixed. It also feels secure. Even the lobby is locked and you need to either open it with your room key or get buzzed in by the desk staff. We got a good price through Laterooms and the location to Paddinton station and the Heathrow Express makes it one of the most convenient places to stay.
Top Local Tips for London
Ring hotel direct for best prices We booked using one of the internet booking services. We found when we arrived at the hotel that we actually had a suite - which was very nice, but we could have got a queen size room (which is what we actually needed) for a lot less. If we had rung the hotel direct we would have been alerted.
Travel cards Take plenty of change and buy your travelcards at the tube automatic ticket machine and avoid the queues.
An Alternative to the Heathrow Express Consider taking the ordinary tube train from Heathrow rather than the Heathrow Express. The latter is expensive at £14.50 per adult for a one-way trip whereas the tube is only £4. Sure the Express gets you to Paddington in 15 mins as against the 60 mins for the tube but if time is not of the essence the tube is much better value.
