I would really recommend this hotel!
The rooms are comfortable, nicely decorated and quintessential of a period building.
The staff cannot do more for you, and are lovely and friendly.
The location is perfect, close to the city centre but not too close so you don't get any noise at night.
Opposite Lichfield Cathedral, with a park at the back, its a lovely place to stay.
Nice View

I more or less agree with all which has been said above, but the hotel has two precious qualities, it is excellently located near the cathedral and in front of Erasmus Darwin's House, and it offers beautiful views. The Regency architecture is also pleasant, if you care for that sort of things. We had a room on the second floor with three windows overlooking a huge and magnificent park, open on the countryside. The evening light and the wind in the curtains were incredibly beautiful, very dramatic and photogenic. With all its obvious shortcomings, the Angel Croft has a lot of charm and unexploited potential. Let's say it could become (again ?) a marvelous hotel.
Dirty, scruffy and derelict.

On arrival we were shown to the annex,l could not describe the condition of the room. After complaining we were given a room in the main hotel, l can only say that this was slightly better. The whole room was dirty, the shower had to be held together to use, and l wouldn't have let a dog sleep on the blankets, ripped , stained and hard. The breakfast on the other hand was excellent, freshly cooked and well served, hence 1 mark.
Out of date and grubby

We had trouble finding a room in Lichfiel and this is the first hotel we found with a vacancy - no wonder. The room in the annex was large but very very dated and very grubby. The bathroom was filthy with mould all around the bath and shower window. The net curtains at the windows looked as if they had never been taken down.
The breakfast next morning was served on plates so hot that the breakfast kept cooking and so was inedible. The only good factor about the hotel is that it was opposite the cathedral.

Our first contact with the Angel Croft was via telephone, we had passed the hotel the previous year and thought the outside looked pleasant. We telephoned to check for vacancies well in advance of our arrival date and were quoted £82.50 per room per night. We really thought at that price it was going to be a better class of 2 star accomodation. On arriving at the hotel after a 4 hour drive and a couple of hours at the NEC we were exhausted and looking forward to a nice cup of tea. My colleague and I were given keys to our rooms, as we ascended the stairs it was quite apparent that the place was shabby. The doors of the rooms on the landing didn't match and the place smelt generally musty. On entering the first room we were horrified, it was dingy and at least 30 years out of date, the bed was obviously sagging (before it was even sat upon). We proceeded to the second room with some trepidation. It was worse the wind was whistling through the window, there was no valance or mattress protector on the bed, we could see this because the sheet didn't cover the mattress and the candlewick bedspread had gapping holes in it. There was a sofa in the room which was so grubby my colleague would not sit on it. My colleague claims that she had the carpet that was on the floor in her own home circa 1974. The whole appearance of both rooms was grubby. After securing alternative accomodation for the night we left and told the owner in no uncertain terms that we were digusted. Do not let external appearances deceive you this hotel is seriously outdated and unkempt. I would not have spent the night there even if the only alternative was a four hour return drive home.

A place looking slightly frayed round the edges on initial viewing. The entrance foyer is pleasant, though a bit old fashioned in look, and a bit basic. The staff are friendly, and we were afforded courtesy on our arrival. Not knowing Lichfield, we agreed on the price, about £68 for the night as we were just glad to have found a room available. We were placed in the annex, a Georgian style house near to the hotel, and directly facing the entrance to the cathedral. We were on the top floor, ie up three flights of stairs. On entering the room, we thought it was huge, but then we'd been staying in travel inns until then. The room was fairly basic, but with a television and telephone, and the beds were a bit uncomfortable. The bathroom was basic, but had a shower and WC. The view was of a garden, which had at the time, at least 10 wild rabbits running around, which we found to be quite nice. Breakfast was latest 9.15am on Sundays, 9 am on other days, which for people on a break like us, seemed like getting up in the middle of the night. The breakfast was very filling and adequate, with a full fry up available. It certainly was not the worst place we've stayed in by any stretch of the imagination, and the plus points are that it is close to both the cathedral and the city centre. There were other rooms in the hotel building itself which I did not see, and perhaps they are a bit better than ours was.
