Historical Traveller Reviews of The Keswick Country House Hotel

excellent value

from oldvole
We stayed in January as part of their promotional deal for dbb. The deal certainly seemed to be successful, as the hotel appeared to be nearly full. We found the room fine (unfortunately the view over Skiddaw was not seen at its best in the low cloud), and the food was good. Staff were consistently excellent in attitude and helpfulness - we did not come across a single member of staff who was anything other than top notch.

The only slight irritation is that in an all in deal, dinner bed and breakfast was obviously at a special rate, but the menus offered other dishes at a ridiculous supplement. For example, at dinner an extra main course was available for a supplement of £9.95. And at breakfast, kippers were available at a supplement of £3.95. This seems outrageous. They would have been better omitting these from the menu altogether!

Great Service and wonderful food

from VC1
We stayed here over the Christmas period and were a little worried due to the reviews on here and the fact that it is only a 3*. However, a friend highly recommended the hotel and it looks lovely in the brochure so we thought we would give it a go. Myself, my partner and 17 month old son had a really lovely stay and would definitely return.

We paid a little extra to have a large room, which really was huge and well furnished. We found ALL of the staff went completely out of their way to accommodate us. Due to my son’s feeding times I often asked for food from the kitchen when it was supposed to be shut and the staff were more than happy to help me. We even arrived 2 hours early, expecting to be told to come back but the receptionist (Clare) quickly organised for our room to be ready. Considering the staff were working all over the Christmas Bank holidays they were really cheerful and the service was excellent. The hotel dates back to 1865 so has some amazing original fixtures and fittings - if you are looking for a modern contemporary hotel this place is definitely not for you. The dinning room is beautiful with high ceilings and huge windows looking over the garden. We ate in the restaurant for three evenings and one lunch time and were extremely happy with the food. We have stayed in 5* hotels (e.g The Low Wood in Windermere) and the food was not as good as here. The hotel is only a five minute stroll from the centre of Keswick but far enough so you are away from the busy centre. The only criticism I have is that our bathroom was way too small and the mattress needed to be replaced.

We look forward to returning and thought it was great value for money. If you have young children they are really accomodating!

expensive and dowdy

from Sue3
Stayed here for 2 nights in Sept and although it advertised deals for a 2 night stay there were none available when I booked. I paid £178 per night for a 4 poster room and although the room was large and soft furnishings looked ok, thebed was uncomfortable and the counterpane stained. The worst part though was the bathroom. At this price I expect marble/granite but it was formica and vinyl and looked very DIY. The toilet cistern was leaking badly and although this was fixed the next morning after we mentioned it, it must have been obvious to the cleaner. The sink was loose and the toilet itself had a 2 inch gap at the back where it was supposed to butt up against the unit. The hairdryer did not work and they had to scoure the hotel to find one I could borrow. The room faced south and even though the weather wasn't the hottest it has been this summer, the room got very warm but the windows only opened a couple of inches. The restaurant is very large and the walls are dotted with food splashes, and dust. the food is ok but the descriptions of the food are a little misleading, certainly not up to the usual standard for a hotel charging these prices. The rest of the hotel is very jaded, carpets are worn and are different in the stairwells, corridors and rooms so tend to clash, and all the paintwork is scuffed and old. The reception area is dark and dowdy and the receptionist when we arrived was extremely off hand.
I would not stay here again.

wonderful break

from JIim-and-Ann
We stayed for three nights as part of a large (50+) family group. The food was to die for, the room was very comfortable though perhaps a little small, the staff were unfailingly helpful and the closeness to everything in Keswick (except the catholic church) meant an easy weekend for all of us ,regardless of age. Definitely going there again. Beware though - the bar prices are dearer than pub prices.

Loved every minute of our stay!

We have just returned from a three-night break at the Keswick.
What a fantastic hotel!
It may not be on a par with The Ritz but for service and cleanliness it is superb.
The staff were welcoming and very attentive without being intrusive.
The hotel is in an excellent spot for touring the North Lakes with a pleasant 5 minute walk into Keswick Town Centre.
We had a standard room with a limited view but still very spacious and quiet.
The evening meal was a real treat and we enjoyed the varied selection of the local produce.
The staff in the Restaurant were very friendly and efficient.
We will definitely be returning to this wonderful hotel!

Disappointed with the breakfast

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is not cheap and we expected something special. It wasn't. The receptionist was a bit on the sharp side and it seemed odd that we could not go to our room until 3.00. However the room was large with a nice view of the garden and the fells beyond but seemed a bit tired. The grounds were OK but not very imaginatively set out. However the breakfast was a great disappointment. Hot buffets rarely work well and this one was particularly poor. The fried eggs were undercooked, the bacon was cold and the black pudding (my favourite) was inedible. The managaress was very pleasant when I complained and promised to speak to the chef but there was little improvement the next day. We will not be staying there again.

very un-clean hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
my wife and i arrived and checked in to hotel no problems,we have stayed there before.
our room had a very slanty floor toward the windows, but the counter-pane on the bed had
chewing gum stuck too it.
there was a bulb not working in the bath-room
i filled in a letter the same day and nothing was corrected.
the resturant had food on the walls
a table cloth in the bar area was soiled.
i have sent a letter and recieved no responce from the hotel
the food was good and the staff okay
but the house keeping is letting this hotel down

Great location

from Reet99
Spent 3 nights here over Easter and thought the hotel was excellent, some of the furnishings are getting a little tired, but could not fault the cleanliness and service. I wouldn't hesitate staying here again.
It is also a great base to see the North Lakes.
Loved it.

Excellent, would recommend this hotel to anyone!

We have just returned from a 5 night break, our 2nd stay in this hotel. On both occasions we thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was excellent and very well presented and the staff were lovely. We booked a standard room which was very comfortable and spotlessly clean and of excellent value, we had BB&EM for just £39pppn! The hotel is in an ideal spot, just short walk to the centre of Keswick. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone.
