Food and location excellent

Have stayed at the Borrowdale many times over the years (and will be going back next month).
Felt I had to write this review to rebalance the first here. There are good and 'bad' rooms at the hotel, it is not a modern purpose built place but I have stayed in worse business hotels for the same price that were just B&B with no view.
The beauty of the hotel is that, after a hard days walking you can get back, have a soak and then go downstairs for a marvelous meal and then a quiet drink in the bar.
The hotel is dog friendly and I have never encountered an unhelpful member of staff. If you want 'boutique' this is not it but the food and location are great!
Nice food but expensive accomodation

We chose the Borrowdale Hotel for a weekend away after our wedding. First impressions of the hotel were good, with well maintained gardens and an impressive exterior. The public areas of the hotel have a certain "olde worlde" charm about them, and the seating areas are comfortable and welcoming.
We had booked a four poster room, which was nice enough but the decor was disappointing. The room had the usual ammenities, tea tray, hairdryer iron and ironing board, but was badly let down by the 1960's style decor and furnishings. The ensuite bathroom was well decorated, modern and very clean, this made the decor of the bedroom even more old fashioned.
The room had fantastic views over Derwent Water, but at £95 per night per person was decidedly overpriced.
However the food is very good, and included in the price was dinner and breakfast.
Dinner is a six course silver service feast, and on the first night for my main course I selected the fillet steak stuffed with stilton cheese with a red wine sauce. It was absolutely delicious. The rest of the meal was also very good, and there is an excellent choice to suit every taste. Breakfast is also excellent with a wide range of food on offer.
My husband and I recommend the food, the six course dinner with coffee is very reasonable at just under £25 per head, and the wine list is extensive, but we dont recommend staying as overall it is not good value. Our advice would be to stay somewhere cheaper and eat at the Borrowdale.
As a comparison we spent a weekend in the centre of Glasgow the month before, dinner bed and breakfast in a five star hotel that we could not fault in any way for £150 cheaper than it cost to stay at the Borrowdale.
