Superb Destination for a Romantic Getaway!!!

My husband and I enjoyed a superb, romantic getaway at this lovely and charming hotel. The service went above our expectations. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. My husband and I had a excellent stay. Being from Boston, MA we are used to high quality in all aspects of hospitality and this hotel proved to be among some of the best we have been to. We plan to return in the near future. Thanks for a great visit to the Lake District!

t wait to return

My partner and I visited the hotel for a special celebration over the recent school holidays in october and I can't understand the negative comments posted about the Hall. The beautiful surroundings and autumn colours were breathtaking. The service and food were outstanding even during a busy week when the hotel was full of families. I found the stay very enjoyable and can't wait to return to the hotel.

4 Star Neglect!

from Ads_Manc
I don't usually take the time to write bad reviews but I could not let this experience pass without warning others.

Our 'luxury' room was dark and felt cramped and cluttered, and more worryingly smelled slighlty damp. We decided to explore what turned out to be a hotel in desperate need of refurbishment, and in some cases a good clean!

Service was poor and there was an air of truculance from the staff which we found staggering.

The evening meal was a decidedly average affair, introduced by a barely edible starter that I would struggle to describe.

But the finishing touch was provided by breakfast the following day.....A school canteen buffet arrangement with dried out eggs, cold bacon and soggy mushrooms - absolutely atrocious!!

Please avoid - this hotel is expensive, and i'm bewildered how it has achieved a 4 star rating??

A special and lovely hotel

A lovely, romantic and atmospheric hotel sited at the northern end of Bassenthwaite lake (near keswick). It is peaceful, with the most wonderful view down the lake. The food is escellent and I believe the chef has 2 michelin stars. We have visited many times and the staff are ever pleasant and polite. The Tower room is the most expensive in the hotel but is so worth the extra cost for its romantic ambience - there is a 360 degree view from its private roof terrace.

Absolutely, romantically FANTASTIC!!!!!!!

My boyfriend and i went to Armathwaite Hall for 1 night (2 days) last minute recently. Now although the weather was good enough to make a tent look attractive, it was a beautiful hotel regardless and a fantastic experience. The food(breakfast and dinner) was outstanding and the staff were available at all times for any request. There were 2 weddings on while we were there and it made the place look like a fairytale.Beautiful surroundings too - the lake was sparkling and we are going back very very soon!!! Ignore all the bad reviews, its lovely.

Decadence at its best

I recently stayed at the hotel for my partners birthday. As a hotelier myself I was concerned about what the experience would be like due to the comments I have read from other users. What I can say is that if it was going to be that bad it would be twice as bad for a hotelier as we are teh worst to please!!

However I was very surprised by the visit because from reading the reviews on here, my visit was nothing like that. The service was excellent and the small touches the family run hotel to make it that little bit special were excellent.

I have trouble, as I have said relating to some of the articles on here. In relation to the recent one about the £140 for 3 nights, I have trouble working out how anybody who wishes to stay in a 4* hotel thinks they can get away with paying such a small amount of money. I think there may have been some misunderstanding on both parts for that to happen, but to write such a negative report on teh hotel only opens the person to the kind of hotels they REALLy are used to staying in!

People need to understand that staff in the hotel industry work very hard to offer the best possible service whenever they can and all these negative comments on hotels only have a dabilitating effect on the moral in the workplace. People should go away to enjoy themselves and not look for problems.

I can say that this was a lovely weekend and does not deserve the reviews some people haev written on here. I wish my hotel (and staff) worked in such a professional and courteous manner as those at Armathwaite Hall Hotel.

My husband and I chose to visit the armathwaite Hall Hotel for our first wedding anniversary and liked the idea that it would only cost us £140 per person for the easter weekend. A price quoted to us by a receptionist and the confimation letter we received. The weekend turned out to be not only more stressful to me than relaxing but also much more expensive after being mislead twice. The staff were not only rude but the duty manager made me out to be a liar ny backing up the person who made the booking when she wasn't even there and also making me out to be brainless by not thinking that it was cheap for a weekend in a four star hotel. I have inbformed the tourist board of my disgust and told all our friends and family to give this hotel a wide berth.

Take a tent instead

We went to Armathwaite Hall for a weekend (March 2003) after it was highly recommended. However after arriving following a long drive we were shown to our room and the dissapointment started. It was VERY small, in an poor state of repair (given the hotels star rating), the TV remote was just held together with electrical tape, there were cobwebs over the air vents, the skirting board was chipped in many places and the view was over the bins (not the lake as I had expected).
We then went downstairs to see about getting a sandwich (as we had been told we would be able to do as the kitchen had shut). We ordered our sandwiches and had a drink, only then to be told we would have to eat them in our room! This was apparently because food could only be eaten in the restaurant area, and as this was now closed we were not permitted to sit downstairs to enjoy a much needed snack. In a state of shock we asked to be notified when they would be ready and we would go an sit on the bed eat them and then come back downstairs. When they finally arrived, they were not totally what we had ordered, and the chedder cheese and tomato toastie still had the plastic wrapper (obviously a processed cheese slice had been used) stuck partially the bottom of the sandwhich and partially inside. Deciding to give it all up as a very bad start, we retired. The next morning the paper I had ordered was not delivered, but the breakfast was very good. Returning to the hotel that evening we decided to order some champagne for the room to be delivered before dinner. After chasing this up it did arrive, but both flutes were chipped. The dinner was very nice, but by then we were happy to get anything that we felt was value for the hefty price tag of the weekend. If this was an overly busy 2 or 3 star hotel you might forgive them, but given the price, and the star rating the quality was a long way short of offering any kind of value for money.
Furthermore there were no apologies forthcoming and after writing a letter of complaint I only received a partial acceptance of how dissapointed we were - still with no apology! Next time I go to Cumbria I'm going to go camping, and I hate camping.

Recent visit

On returning from a recent visit it was interesting to read the other reviews of this hotel they are poles apart with no middle ground. Quite simply the setting and buidling of this hotel are stunning however this is obviously not enough to sustain a 4 star reputation. Whilst the food is excellent it is to be enjoyed in hushed silence in a dining room devoid of atmosphere, laughter or visible enjoyment of the guest. It is so typical of a UK hotel to stifle guests with too much formality. The staff are friendly and efficient in general but there is an atmoshpere that pervades that the guest should be grateful to be there. Also many small touches that you find in boutique hotels are missing. The ability to get a drink or snack all day, a minibar heaven forbid, turning down the bed, a chocolate or two and a welcome letter indicating there is a manager. The rooms have stunning views if in the main house but are cluttered with a mixture of period pieces and modern replica's with basic bathrooms. In general a great shame give a designer 50-100k and a free hand and this could be a smashing place. The lakeview room comes close. See the Samling in the area for a well executed classsy boutique hotel, unless very British old world charm is what you like . Whoops forgot to mention the spa!! more local leisure centre than 4 star.
