What a dump?!

from Katy-Leeds
Oh my god!!! I have never ever seen or stayed somewhere as shockingly appaling as the Riverside Hotel!.... Urine encrusted on the toilet base, dirty glasses in the bathroom, thick of dust, and plain filthy! One of the lights had been taken off the celing and to fill the hole in the ceiling rose they has stuffed it with wet toilet roll!! The wallpaper was peeling off the walls! It was an absolute hell hole................

HOWEVER The staff were excellent and totally faultless, they tried their upmost with everything, but there is very little they could do to rectify the Hotels problem. Also the leisure facilities were top notch, the spa and steam rooms were great!

In my opinion this dump should be shut down! Sorry if that sounds harsh - A few words of advise.... Stay somewhere else!!!!

suprisingly good

from PAULBWarrington
Having read the previous reviews, especially those describing the food as poor i was not totally excited at the prospect of staying at the hotel. It was booked at the last minute, being the only hotel in the area to accomodate a family group of eleven at short noticeon the 30th December 2006.First impressions however were very favourable. The entrance area was very tastefully decorated for the season and the large bar area leading off was equally inviting and comfortable..I had a double room which was a good size with the advantage of a further single bed.It was clean and had a beautiful view of the river Kent below where ducks and swans glided past. The greatest suprise was the evening meal.Between all of us we probably had every choice on the Table d'hote menu.Every course was excellent, the service was prompt and the final bill a total suprise working out at approximately £15.00 per head, including two bottles of wine.As someone who spends about 30 to 40 weeks every year living in hotels throughout the the u.k. i can say that not only would i have no hesItation in recommeding this hotel to others but woul definately return in the Spring.

A summary - self and others

from PS12TheDr
Yes the rooms are a little tired, but they are perfectly adequate and well above the standard you would expect for this price range. Its an old-fashioned hotel so expect the odd window not to fit. Personally I hate PVC square boxes to sleep in, after all, im not Japanese!!

Yes, the evening food is horrible, a very limited choice of badly cooked, pre-prepared unimaginative offerings, served by staff that cant speak English….so eat out. The only compensation being Breakfast which again is excellent for the price range.

The leisure facilities are first class, and if you like an evening workout rather than the Bar, stay here for this alone.

Absolutely fine - good place to stay for Lake District travel

from OvalOffice2008
The hotel feels like a fairly standard business-class hotel - nothing to get excited about, but perfectly good for what it is. It has a good location on the edge of the town centre (although is very difficult to find by car due to Kendal's insane one-way system) and has a small car park. Staff were friendly and helpful. The corridors were rather sad and dingy, and the rooms were bog standard business hotel rooms. The dining room was also a little dreary, and breakfast was nothing special - the usual cooked buffet.

There is a large, pleasant bar - although it seemed to be unstaffed for much of the time, making it difficult to get served.

The spa is nice, although the pool is very small.

If you just want a comfortable bed for the night in a pleasant, friendly hotel, to use as a base for exploring the Lake District, this is a great hotel. If you want a little extra luxury, you may be disappointed.

t the staff speak ENGLISH

from JWaldron
Why can't the staff speak ENGLISH? The Riverside Hotel was OK but we felt alienated when wanting to communicate. The room wasn't ready when we arrived. When the room became available the non-speaking staff could not understand that we were missing a bed!

Excellent Break

from Ellie
We booked in for the 3 night deal at the Riverside Hotel In July. On arrival as our room wasnt ready they tool ourcases behind recepption til we returned from a walk round Kendal.
Our room was a decent size although a slightly larger bed would help as we are not thin people.
There was rather a large cob web and spider on the outside of the window, and as it was during the hot spell the window had to be kept open.
The resturaunt staff were very very pleasant and if i have any complaint it is the fact that on the first night the main course was lamb chops and minted mash which meant the potatoes looked like mushy peas. the second night it was horseradish mash. I think that we should have the option of plain mash or chips if we wanted
Other than that we are definatly going back

book somewhere else.

from holkham
The bedroom we had was filthy dirty. Tile groutings around the shower were thick with black grease. Beds not properly made up. Bathroom glasses not washed daily. Tea and coffee not topped up on a daily basis. Floor only vacuumed when maid thought necessary. Food in restaurant acceptable but poorly presented.

We enjoyed our stay at the Riverside

from A TripAdvisor Member
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and the hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room we had on the 3rd floor wasa good size and comfortable with a lovely view of the river. The food was good, but the evening meals were slightly small. However would certainly stay there again and would recommend it.

Nice hotel...fantastic food!

from Michaela_Phil
We stayed 3 nights DB&B via the offer on the website in May 2006. All rooms over look the river and have beautiful views. The best thing about this hotel was the food - absolutely superb. Quite honestly we ate some of the nicest food we've ever had during our stay at the Riverside. Although the portions weren't huge they were sufficient and all ingredients are locally sourced, seasonal and full of flavour. Breakfast is self service with excellent choice and the restaurant staff are exceptionally efficient, polite and hard-working.

The room was spacious and had everything needed - iron and ironing board were a nice touch. There were only two let-downs: one was the housekeeping (cleaners didn't hoover even before we arrived, and the bathroom floor hadn't been washed in a while by the look of it) and secondly, our room adjoined the one next to it via an internal door. You could hear every sound from the room next door which was a nightmare at times (noisy kids). We probably should have asked to be moved but had unpacked everything and it wasn't that bad given that the kids went to bed early!

Didn't use pool but gym was ok, if a bit small and hot and the gym staff didn't seem bothered about showing guests how to use equipment etc - everything was a bit of a hassle for them.

Overall, we felt the break was excellent value. The hotel is 5 mins walk from Kendal centre. We arrived on Sunday for 3 days and never had a problem with parking. We would definitely visit again if only for the food - we can still taste the delicious home-made rhubarb and apple crumble......!

dissapointed

from A TripAdvisor Member
leasure facilities and bar area very good, but bedroom very tired. Found cobwebs all down one corner, windowframe wedged with paper to stop rattles.
Do not bother with evening meal, chef does not know that a pie has pastry. Breakfast OK but self service.

Top Local Tips for Kendal

Paulo Gianni's This is a fantastic italian restaurant. Very good service large portions of great food.

Get a Car Use Enterprise based in Kendal, Fantastic customer service, and will meet you at the station.

Kendal Kendal is ok for all your necessary needs! Easy to find! Easy to get across to Windermere! But it little run down! But not as bad as The Riverside Hotel!! Kendal has some nice views and is great for those who like to be close to the city life! But not so good for people who would like more scenic and a more pieceful area!
