Trip to the Lakes
from jonesy47Another great stay ay Castle Green
from GillipAll the facilities are kept in very good condition. It was a pleasure to think about going back to the hotel after a days walking, to know we would enjoy the pool and steam room. Staff were polite and helpful in all areas of the hotel. The room clean and comfortable.
The evening meal at Alexanders was very good as was the service. I looked forward to breakfast knowing it is of a very high standard and was not disappointed. It manages to be relaxed and unhurried and we did not feel at all pressured even though the hotel was busy.
Great location, modern hotel
from Sheepish239Had meal in on-site pub in the evening, got there just before rush and had enjoyable reasonably priced meal. Relaxed in lounge listening to piano playing (not sure if this happens every evening) which was different and pleasant. Unfortunately ground floor room had everyone passing by and could be rather noisy (not hotels fault).
Superb breakfast, good value but some people had to wait for tables but were provided with tea/coffee while they did so which seemed a nice touch. All in all a modern hotel in a good location which I would recommend.
last minute decision
from YRMWe decided not to eat in the main restaurant as there were 2 functions going on and we preferred the look of the on-site pub. We had a few drinks in the bar before dinner which were very reasonably priced for a hotel. The meal in the bar was lovely and fresh and arrived promptly. The prices were excellent for the quality of food and the house wine was enjoyable at less than £10 per bottle. The only thing I would mention is that they could have had more staff in the pub to cope with the amount of diners. There was only 2 members of staff taking orders and serving food throughout the evening. You really had to make yourself known in order to get their attention!
The main hotel bar was pleasant and the staff efficient. I would only have one complaint and that is the noise from outside the hotel. Our room was unfortunately at the back of the hotel and therefore subject to lorries coming and going in the early hours of the morning.
Breakfast time was a little haphazard as we had to wait for a table to become free and be cleaned by, again, very few staff. However, the cooked breakfast was lovely. It was freshly cooked and kept topped up so that everyone got plenty of what they wanted. The toast was cold when it arrived but I was too full to care by then.
Check out was painless and the whole experience enjoyable. I would ask for a room nowhere the delivery area next time though.
Our stay
from Vikki_WThe reception staff were nice and helpful, but our room was on the ground floor right by the reception which was VERY loud in the morning with guests walking past our room at full volume! The room was small and the bathroom had no bath. Also I am not sure how well the bathroom had been cleaned as there was still old soap stuck to the shower! Another problem was that the room was freezing and we could not get the heating to work. However, the bed was comfortable and the rest of the room was clean and fresh.
The meal that we had in the Greenhouse restaurant made up for it all. The food was FABULOUS!!! The service was very average with our drinks taking 20mins to arrive and the waiter slamming food down into the cutlery etc. But as I said the food was spectacular, as was the wine- would higly recommend.
Breakfast did the job and was very good.
All in all, for the food alone- I would go back.
Excellent hotel with great staff, food and leisure - a must try.
from scojimFrom the moment we arrived and a duty manager offered to help with our bags to the check out on departure, all the staff were polite, helpfull and humourous - a rare quality in a hotel these days.
The room and en-suite was clean and reasonably spacious and well looked after over the stay.
The leisure facilities, used every morning and on some evening s are clean and well managed with pool, gymnasium and steam room all of a high standard and towels are supplied - if you enjoy a swim or sauna you should try it.
The restaurant, used for breakfast and dinner is excellent. Breakfast caters for all styles, fresh traditional cooked breakfasts from a buffet style counter to continental style cereals, rolls, pastries as well as coffee, teas and toasts served to your table.
Dinner - book early for a window /terrace view table - has to be tried as this was the highlight or our stay. The theatre kitchen (two AA rosette) produced an exquisite meal for my wife and I that was innovative, beautifully presented and tantalising in the flavours produced. The chef is without doubt a master !
The Kendal location is at the southern end of the Lake district but the whole of the Lake district is within easy reach and we did not find this a problem at all.
Absolutely Fantastic!!
from A TripAdvisor MemberDinner in the Restaurant boasted the two rosette standard it has been accredited with - we can still taste the sumptuous flavours from the Dinner we ate in Castle Green's Greenhouse Restaurant three nights in a row!
Booking again for Christmas/ New Year 2006 as the package that they offer looks fantastic and such good value. Would definately recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing break in the Lake District.
terrible
from A TripAdvisor MemberLovely hotel
from MMmdMinor issues:
a) Not enough non-smoking rooms so we were allocated a smoking one - I did not realise how much I hated old cigarette smoke
b) The chef in the restaurant kept shouting "service" every 2-3 min. This is an open kitchen and this was very intrusive as we had a table very near the kitchen. The food was really first class as one would expect for £40 per head including wine and service. The service was rather mixed with clearly some very professional people and some brought in for the night.
Would I stay here again? Yes definitely, but I would insist on a non-smoking room and when booking for dinner I would ask for a table as far away from the kitchen as possible.
lovely

cheap ish taxis ask at reception for them to book a taxi for you.cheapish taxi rates
Winderemere vs. Keswick I know that Rick Steves recommends Keswick as a base for exploring the Lake District over Windermere, because Windermere is overrun by tourists and buses. We found Keswick to be just as crowded and hectic. The main difference is, Keswick is more focused on hiking and walking where Winderemere is more focus on the lake and motoring tours. We liked Kendal because there were a very high number of people with their dogs. Brits seem far more likely to bring their dog out with them while touring, a characteristic that we liked very much.
Places to eat For a lovely evening meal visit Deja Vu - french restaurant in town. Reasonably priced and food is fantastic (costs a fraction of the hotel/Alexander's prices). The local Indian Restaurant (Eastern Balti) in Kendal is very good also.
