Historical Traveller Reviews of Swallow Belstead Brook Hotel

Pleasantly surprised...

from leedswearytraveller
First of all let me say the external picture of the hotel used on here isn't the Belstead Brook and is very misleading in appearance.

I recently stayed in the Belstead for three nights on a business trip. I booked the hotel because of it's location to the A14 and, mainly, the leisure facilities which turned out to be absolutely first class.

I must admit I was a bit wary after reading some of the negative reviews on this site and came very close to changing my mind but to be honest I couldn't have chosen a nicer hotel.

The hotel is possibly overstated in its description as a "country" hotel as it is in quite an urban housing area but the hotel grounds are lovely and once you park up you could be forgiven for thinking you were miles from anywhere although the route off the A14 is literally five minutes drive and very well sign posted.

It has obviously undergone some recent renovation, the smell of fresh paint in some areas gives it away, and I found all areas of the hotel, including my room, to be clean, tidy and well looked after with lots of character and a very relaxing atmosphere in the Garden bar and the restaurant.

Both the bar and restaurant food were exemplary, really could not be faulted, and I would not hesitate to stay at the Belstead Brook again and would definitely recommend it to others.

A regular hotel goer in Ipswich

from ATRoadWarrior
I stay in Ipswich on a regular basis and unfortunately have to stay at the Belstead on a more regular basis than I would like due to the lack of hotel rooms mid-week. Although I agree the long suffering staff are quite helpful and friendly and add to the old country house feel this hotel is long overdue a refurbishment. The rooms can be poor to abysmal, at best a tired nicotine stained peeling wallpapered room and if you are lucky the 1980’s TV might be tuned so that you can pick-up a picture. However I often get rooms where the shower controls require some on the spot maintenance whilst you are standing there naked trying to get the resemblance of warm water and if you are really unlucky you get the box room on the 5th floor (522 I think) which will have anyone claustrophobic running with terror. You could venture to the bar, which is okay if you drink enough of the good selection of alcohol; only buy large rounds as the bar staff aren’t around very often, otherwise the bar indeed does reassemble an old person’s retirement home. Oh and the food, because I try and eat healthily there is A salad on the menu other than that the rest of the limited menu is made up of Nacho’s and steak so indeed is a menu you will get tired of eating from very quickly on this note the breakfast reminds me of greasy spoon and generally reflects the school dinner standard of the food in general, though to be fair I tried the restaurant only once. Thus the best thing about this hotel is that you have to drive as it’s away from the town so at least you will have a car to go somewhere else. On the positive side there is a gym, though again like the rest of the hotel this requires modernisation though you can still get a workout in.. All in all it’s a cheap hotel where you can get nights sleep but don’t expect much else, I certainly wouldn’t take my girlfriend here on a weekend away or I’d expect to be dumped...!

Belstead Brook Hotel

Certainly has charm of a country hotel with some lovely cosy features inside and out. Beautiful part of the country and very close to Ipswich. Found the room around average but could do with a little TLC. Staff very warm and welcome just like the breakfast. Will definitly consider when next staying in Ipswich as beats a travelodge/holiday inn hands down. I certainly felt like I had stayed in a Hotel rather than a cheap stop at travelodge.

Superb Short Break

from gotosee
Booked this Break somewhat anxious having read some negative reviews.I can only say what a comfortable, relaxing hotel this is to stay in.
The rooms are very clean and cosy. They are not as pristine as you find in modern ,faceless high rise hotel chains. It has all the hallmarks of a proper Country House Hotel. The food is first class and the leisure facilities 5star.
We can,t wait to book again for our next break.

Needs a facelift

from loopy101
My partner stayed at the Belstead Brook Hotel for 3 nights during a particularly hot spell in June 2006 and as we stayed in the top floor (room 522) I can honestly say I've never been in a hotter room in my life. The staff had placed a fan in the room, but this did little to alleviate the stuffiness. That said, it was a large room, and clean. The decor is badly in need of a facelift with tired tiles in the bathroom, wallpaper coming off, mean trickle of a shower and dated fittings.
The rest of the hotel is pleasant, the outside is impressive and the health club with indoor pool is great, although the changing rooms could do with an upgrade, the grounds and situation are good.
I would stay here if I needed to be close to Ipswich without being in the town centre (about 10 mins drive) and if the price was cheap, otherwise I'd wait until they give this place the much -needed overhaul it deserves.

Tired And Dated

We stayed just the one night (Thankfully) at The Belstead Brook in Ipswich which was highly recommended as one of the best hotels in the region. If this is one of the best I'd hate to see the worst.

The brochures describe the hotel as nestling amongst several acres of woodland. (Was I missing something) It should be described as a stone's throw from various housing estates.

When you first enter the reception area you get a feeling of an old country house which looks tired and dated. The room we were allocated fell well below the standard of what we would expect from a hotel which gives itself a four star rating. Although the bed was a fair size and comfortable enough the rest of the decor was poor. The wallpaper was peeling in parts and the room carpet was very grubby with numerous stains.

On route to our room via a maze of what resembled hotel kitchen doors there was a distinct smell of Body Odour and smelly feet. However, I believe this was more due to the old carpets and heating sysytem than anybody's personal hygeine.

The hotel bar and restaurant area lacks any atmosphere whatsoever. I felt depressed just sitting in the bar watching some prat order Gin, Vodka, Barcardi, Arches and Martini in a pint glass before asking the waiter to "TOP IT UP WITH COKE". (IF YOU WERE THAT MALE WITH ALL THE BLING IT'S NOT COOL OR CLEVER TO ACT LIKE THIS).

The bar reminded me of a sitting room in an Old Folks Home with similar chairs with high wings to protect your head from "NODDING OFF". The piano player near the bar was well suited to his surroundings.

On a good note, the staff were all very pleasant and helpful and the prices were reasonable.

The breakfast area was well set out with good seating arrangement. Good choice of cereals, yoghurts and fruit juices etc. The cooked breakfast items were done to perfection but needed to be in seperate hot plates and on a bigger table as two people attempting to serve themselves would get in each other's way.

It sounds like I'm being quite harsh but I have to say we did come away from the hotel a little disappointed. To summarise, the location is not as decribed, and the hotel itself is quite stuffy and outdated. It is highly unlikely we would return to this hotel but this does not have any reflection on the staff. In particular both receptionists were very polite and informative.

What a drab...

Stayed at the Belstead Hotel for night and 1st thing that annoyed my was the rather awkward drive from the A12/A14. When I arrived the exterior did look good and inviting, with an excellent swimming pool area. The room however was totally the opposite - our room was shabby and tired looking. The wallpaper was peeling off in places and the carpets have seen better days. The bath and shower were totally disgusting with a dirty shower curtain.
The breakfast was 1st class and we enjoyed it but the rooms need a face lift and some new decor. I've stayed at the Premeir Travel Inn in Ipswich and this is much cleaner, and a better experience for £46 per room!

We had an 'exectutive' room...nothing exectutive about the extensive peeling wallpaper and "grubby" headboard...yuck.

short staff: we were part of a large wedding group, the food from the restuarant was unforgivably late, 1hr 30 mins in some cases, and when it did arrive it was not worth the price. I did over hear that they had no head chef for that evening...

they, without warning, closed the bar at midnight, telling us to see reception for the night porter who was no where to be found for 2 hours.

the leisure facilites we very good however, and suitable for families, with a starter pool, hot tub, and large main pool in a nice setting.

in summary i don't think it's worth the money, it needs some decent management and a bit of 'tender loving care' to justify the prices.

A good option if the price is right

We found and booked this hotel via Laterooms and had an excellent rate for 2 nights for a double and a single room which wasn't available direct with the hotel.
This is a character hotel in lovely grounds, and is obviously in the process of refurbishment in some areas which at worst could be described as a little tired. Our bedrooms were spacious, very clean and comfortable with all of the usual facilities found in 3 or 4 star hotels. The public areas that we used were also of a good standard. The hotel has a lovely leisure club that we didn't have time to use, but we had a full view of the pool from our room and were sorry not to try it!.
We only ate breakfast, which was the usual buffet style and of a good standard; the waitresses were friendly and the service prompt.
If you want everything to look pristine and perfect then this may not yet be the place for you. The negatives would be that the hotel does seem a little short staffed (which seems to be par for the course) and can be a bit challenging for anyone with impaired mobility as there are quite a lot of steps and quite a lot of walking between areas of the hotel. Probably easier in a wheelchair as there are ramps and chairlifts to assist with this.
Had I paid £104 a night (the rack rate for a double room) I would probably have had higher expectations, but at a rate closer to Premier Lodge or similar this was a bargain and we enjoyed our stay very much. Well worth a try.
