Historical Traveller Reviews of Salthouse Harbour Hotel

Very stylish and comfy but a little noisy

from A TripAdvisor Member
Beautifully presented hotel, comtemporary and chic in a converted warehouse overlooking marina yet 5-8 minutes walk from the centre of Ipswich and shops/restaurants. Really like the place. Massive comfy bed, best mattress/pillows I've had in a long time and the best shower (separate cubicle) in England...- helpful, on the ball staff, nice amenities like bottled water, DVD player and a splendid bar/restaurant. Food was good if a little pricey. Breakfast is included and excellent (cooked or continental). The only (small) drawbacks - and this is nitpicking : the car park is v small so it's a bit of a scrum getting in or out - best to arrive early (before 4) - you can always have a drink at the bar. The lounge area is a little cigaretty - but this will obviously now change next year. The rooms are quite noisy - you can hear people tramping up and down the corridors/in the room above so if you're sensitive to this you won't get much rest. Despite this a good choice if travelling in the area anyway or on business. Probably not a destination it its own right (there are more interesting places to stay in the area).

peaceful

from megaboff
I stayed here for a brief overnight stay so I cannot vouch for the quality of food for an evening meal in the hotel restaurant but I experienced everything else. I arrived late (about 10.45pm) & had to ring the hotel for directions. The receptionist was polite & efficient & managed to talk me in with no problems so a great start.

The car park was full though so it was a bit tricky having to find a space although the reception did offer to hold on to my car keys & move the car if I wanted to block someone in.

Check in was efficient & the room was on the top floor with a side view of the marina & was also quiet as it was a long way from the street. The decor was lovely & modern with a large bed that was very comfortable. The bathroom had both a bath & separate shower which was nice & both worked fine. The taps were modern which meant it took a little time working out how to change the temperature. The room lighting was bright enough & easily controlled as was the air conditioning.

It was very clean & with high quality refreshments (tea/coffee/biscuits/bottled water).

Breakfast was served by polite & friendly staff & was excellent quality with enough choice for different tastes. The staff throughout, & at every contact, seemed well-trained & went out of their way to help with any query.

I wouldn't hestitate to both recommend to others & stay at this hotel again in the future with the only downside being the parking space.

Disappointing - too many hidden extras

from WAFC
I stayed in the hotel for 7 nights over 2 weeks.

Very nice looking hotel in a good location by Ipswich harbour which has been converted from an old warehouse (so has a Loft-type feel). At first glance it looks well converted but they have gone cheap in a number of areas so already looking tired (carpets dirty & stained, tiles in the bathroom loose & dirty, shower does not drain well so overflows).

They have considered some nice touches (e.g. DVD player in SOME - but not all - rooms) but have forgotten many essentials (no air conditioning or fans in the room so it can get VERY hot. If you leave the window open then you get a lot of noise from the local bar and the hotel terrace.

Unfortunately I doubt the hotel's honesty & integrity, especially as there are too many extras ... if you want vegetables with your main meal ... EXTRA to the meal price, if you want room service ... EXTRA to the meal price, if you want a quiet room ... EXTRA. In my second week they had put the price of the room up by £26 per night too.

Service was OK and it was good that they took my meal back when it was not cooked how I ordered it. I am not sure how organized they are either. For example, I booked a non-smoking room but was allocated a smoking room.

Like their sister hotel (the Angel in Bury St Edmunds) the car parking is a nightmare and there is limited other parking in the area.

Would I stay there again ? Almost certainly NOT as I think there are better hotels in the area that offer better value.

On the positive side though, the Salthouse Harbour is far superior to the Angel Hotel, so there is progress.

Distinctive Modern Hotel with Marina View

from Richard_SW11
We spent one night here and enjoyed it. The rooms are quite spacious and we had an oblique view of the marina (room 205). We did not have dinner in the brasserie because our failure to book in advance would have meant a very late meal. Breakfast was OK.

The car park is too small so they have to resort to double parking. This did not cause us any problems, but might if you need a quick early gettaway.

For dinner we had an excellent seafood meal at Loch Fyne Restaurant (formerly Mortimers), 5 minutes stroll away at 1 Duke Street. ----

All mod cons

We stayed for one night on a Sunday. The staff at the hotel could not have been more pleasant and helpful. The rooms were lovely with a great view of the marina. The bathrooms are great too. We found the food (dinner and breakfast) fine, but not fantastic.

Salthouse a winner!

I've stayed at the Salthouse Harbour Hotel about three times now, and I definatly plan to go back in the near future. This is truely a quality hotel, very well recommended on my behalf. The staff are young, helpful and very willing to make you stay a plesant one. From booking the reservation to checking in was a pleasure as the staff are clearly well trained with good manners and a smile! The room also was a delight, nice and clean and very comforting. It had a nice feel to it with the wooden carved headboard to the moden décor and I was lucky enough to get a room with a balcony over looking the Marina. I ate in the hotel that evening and had a wonderful meal, each course professionaly presented and very tasty. The restaurant had a buzzing atmosphere and along with the rest of the hotel great interior design. It was a nice surprise to recieve some polite chit-chat from one of the managers after I'd finished eating. I was directed to the lounge which again had a very warm feel and plesant atmosphere where I enjoyed several nice beverages. I would say this is the best place to stay in Ipswich and strongly recommend it to anyone with a family or anyone on a business stay.

Quayside Delight

from amijane
This is by far the nicest place to stay in Ipswich and reasonably priced considering its location overlooking the marina.

The staff were polite and helpfull, the breakfast was very tasty and well presented. There is no extra charge for having it brought to the room. Great to have breakfast in bed!!

The hotel was spotlessly clean and presented in a contemporary style with some lovely art work. The staircase and corridors reminded me of a cruise ship, small reception area, pleasant bar and restaurant and gorgeous lounge room.

The hotel room I had was at the front of the building overlooking the marina and benefitted from a balcony. The room was decorated in creams, khaki and browns, comfortable bed with ornate wooden headboard, good sized wardrobe space, hairdryer, trouser press, tea/coffee making facilities, large television, lots of lamps, writing desk and two chairs.

The bathroom was clean with fully tiled walls and floor, incorporating a good sized bath and seperate shower cubicle, one wash hand basin, trendy spiral towel warmer, fluffy towels and the latest design taps. ( However I found it difficult to get the temperature right.)

The only downside in my opinion is that the bedroom and bathroom were on the small side and the toiletries provided were an economical brand.

I would definitely use this hotel again and highly recommend it.

GREAT

from manymyles66
Having stayed in the town a few times at different times I can say that this is the best the town has to offer. Wonderful building, great food and wines and real friendly staff. The waterfront location is very peaceful, though night time street noise can annoying. Great stay!

Cut above the rest !

from A TripAdvisor Member
Great hotel - have stayed here on four seperate occasions. The two suites on the top floor have the best floor to ceiling view of the marina and out to the orwell. The suites are well worth the extra and are beautifully furnished with hi-tech equipment and a large bathroom. Very modern, staff are delightful and very experienced in the smooth running of a boutique hotel. Restaurant is great - food inventive and reasonably priced - only complaint was the salt bread - yuk ! There is nothing else like this hotel in Ipswich it's a real cut above the rest.

Great new hotel with marina view

from jacman
We stayed for three nights using the hotel's special rate for dbb plus Sunday night b&b at reduced rate. The food is excellent and the service even better. Every member of staff wants to make your stay a pleasant one, and their training is obvious. Our room had a view over the river/marina which was busy on a sunny weekend, but in a good way - not too noisy. The rooms are quite large, stylish and comfortable with dvd player in the tv. The bathrooms are very modern and well planned, although some instruction may be necessary with the state-of-the-art taps! It is also very near to walk to the centre of Ipswich with it's historic buildings and interesting shops.

one way We found the hotel difficult to find the first time. There is a one way system in Ipswich which makes it quite difficult. Now we use sat nav and have no problems.
