Historical Traveller Reviews of Renaissance London Gatwick Hotel

Like most hotels near Gatwick

from Slowhands
the Renaissance suffers from overpricing an inferior product and service offering. To add insult to injury they seem to think that it is one of the best in the area. We stayed prior to a holiday and just needed a bed and somewhere to park the car for a week. As I had complained following a previous stay (on business) the room we were given had been given a very thorough cleaning and there was complimentary fruit and a mediocre bottle of wine - I would prefer better value for money. My car was supposed to be moved to a more secure parking area on site - it was not (the matchbox by the rear tyre was still there undamaged if a little damp)fortunately there was no damage to it.

So-So---not a normal Renaissance

I stayed in this hotel nine years ago when it was either a Ramada or a Radisson (can't remember). About all they've done to the place is replace the hotel signs and maybe the linens.

The only redeeming feature is that it is a Marriott property near Gatwick.

Not very impressed

from hardpack
I would stay in this hotel again only if I were very tired and could not be bothered to go anywhere else after a flight. My room was shabby, lookd tired and was adjacent to the lift shaft, which made the room a bit noisy on and off during the night. The shower curtain did not meet the bath, so there was a lot of water on the floor after my shower! The fittings looked as if they ought to have been replaced some years ago. I did not bother with the restaurant or any other facilities. All in all, I did not think that this was good value for money, and would go back to Le Meridien instead.

Not good enough

from Dunc
We spent an overnight stay at the Renaissance using their park here fly there rate. First problem, they dont have enough car parking space, obviously taking more bookings than they have spaces. We ended up parking on the grass. The room was okay, if a little frayed around the edges. The bar was very good value and the food excellent. Next morning we discovered that breakfast was £15 each and not included in the £155 price. We then got a shuttle to the airport, cost £2.50 each, not £2 as it states on the Marriott website. On our return we had a 40 minute wait for the shuttle watching all the other airport hotel shuttles come and go more than once. Once back at the hotel we had a further delay as the hotel had lost our car keys.
Overall, not good enough for a Marriott hotel, we wont be staying there again.
My tip park with APH and get their lovely shuttle coach to the airport. If you must stay at the airport, use Le meridien which is attached to the North terminal, so no shuttle required and it doesnt cost a lot more than the renaissance.

okay for an airport overnight

This was a perfectly acceptable “crash pad” after our long flight across the Atlantic and its management even made it something of a treat. The check-in experience was delightful. The manager was out in the lobby greeting arrivals with terrific chocolate and making small talk. He was an excellent hotelier and made us feel welcome.

The room was more spacious than most European hotel rooms and it was clean, comfortable and quiet. The food in the lobby café was acceptable albeit expensive. It would be nice if the hotel a few more things to divert attention. There is nothing to see or do near Gatwick and so all entertainment is in the hotel. One billiards table is all there is to pass the time.

A good property that is recommendable if you need to stay near Gatwick.

Stopover hotel only

from Leoned
Stranded in Gatwick for 12 hours and we needed a place to grab a few hours of sleep. The hotel is about 1 mile from the airport and there is a 2.5 pounds pp shuttle that'll get you from the airport to the hotel. The standard rates at check-in were 140 euro and for the price you are not really getting much. Tahnkfully I used Marriott Reward points to cover the room charges. The hotel is fairly old and could use a good makeover and I would not recommend it as a vacation hotel.

The room was clean and in good shape. The bed was very firm and the bathroom was functional although once again not very special if you were dropping 140 euro a night.

The shuttel ran every 30 minutes and was ontime for our departure to the airport. We're not in America anymore and it did cost 2.5 pounds each way.

Stay is you need to get some sleep but beyond that I'd go elsewhere.

Fine for airport stopover

from LVSaint
You could do a lot worse than using this as a stopover hotel before your early morning flight.

We were given a 'Club' room midweek for 115 pounds, much less than it stated on the pricing card above the checkin desk. The girls at the frontdesk were not all that helpful but the young man (porter) who assisted me was very good and courteous for all our requests during the stay.

Room and bathroom were spacious and clean. Useful light switches for all lighting incorporated into bedside tables on both sides. TV with many channels including Sky Sports. Fridge, kettle, microwave, easy to use air conditioning, storage space.
Being a club room, we had access to the club lounge which included fax and copiers, large tv, couches and free drink (but not very well stocked) fridge.

Restuarant we tried not bad, a bit slow. Bar we never used but looked good. Shuttle service we tried to use but was too full. I would recommend a taxi anyway since the shuttle is 2.50 each, taxi to south terminal was only 5.00.

I would still recommend the Travel Inn down the road which offers rooms at 50 pounds a night but their non smoking rooms were booked up by the time we checked in.

All in all, Rennaissance is fine for a stopover at Gatwick, no problems here.

Fair stay at the Renaissance

from Fat_Triplet_3
Stayed one night here, using Marriott points, to have easy access to Gatwick for a return home to SC the next morning. The Staff were friendly and accomodating but the hotel and rooms are in desperate need of updating. I seriously doubt that this hotel would meet the quality requirements of the Renaissance brand in the US. The "courtesy shuttle" to and from Gatwick was £2.50 each way for an 8 minute ride. Apparently, courtesy means something different in American English!

I ended up eating at a pub that is a five minute walk from the hotel. It is called the Six Bells and can be found by walking up the road that is on the opposite side of the roundabout past the gas station on the right not the BP on the roundabout. It was either a Texaco or Exxon) and cutting through the church cemetary on the left. The food was fair, the ambiance and beer were great.

shuttle stinks

from FloridaWanderer73
This hotel is very Brady Bunch, 1970's style. The furniture and carpet look to be original 1970's style. The rooms are very run-down and not what I would call clean. OK for an airport hotel, but more Fairfield Inn than Renaissance in the Marriott family.

This hotel could be a lot better with some updating, new furniture and new carpets.

There is no reason for me to not try a different Gatwick hotel next time, the Hilton and Le Meridien would be on my list.

Costs 2.50 GBP each way to shuttle to/from airport per person (so for a couple that is 10 GBP or $20 - not insignificant) and the shuttles are 30 minutes apart!

Great room - terrible food....

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I along with our two small children stayed here in the middle of February before a flight.

The transfer bus to a from Gatwick was efficient, took just 5 minutes, and they gave us a token which meant it was free.

We had asked for and were given a family room.

It was excellent. A 'L' shaped room with a curtained off area with 2 single beds for the kids. The lights in that part could be dimmed independantly to allow for a night light.

The downside to this hotel is the food. My kids can demolish Pizza as if it were an olymic event but they sent them back claiming not to be hungry.

However, I would stay here again without hesitation. I would just make other food plans.
