Nice hotel, good place to stay

from Miami sky warrior
I was a little nervous about staying here, having read some of the other reviews, however I got a very good rate through a discount site and decided to risk it. I'm glad I did - the hotel was fine in my opinion - the room was fresh and clean, looks like they must have been refurbishing, as everything was very new. No problems with the shuttle bus which showed up on the posted schedule. I would not pay their rack rate (GBP 140.00 per night....) but with a discounted rate, this is a fine place to stay.

Parking problem - Warning!

from djsaunders
Stayed at Holiday Inn for one night October 2005 before flying out at 5:30am the following day. Arrived at hotel at 9:00pm to find nowhere to park. I was only leaving the car overnight as I was parking on the short stay car park at the airport. It took 3 attempts to tell various members of staff that my car was not going to be left at the hotel while I was away and that I would need to have access to it at 4:00am for my drive to the terminal building. They wanted to block me in so their driver could move it at 7:00am!! Eventually left car on grass outside the front of the hotel - positioned so no one could block me in. Looking at how cars were parked around the hotel I would never leave my car at this hotel for a long period of time. Use the NCP car parks etc around the airport. Rooms are ok usual Holiday Inn standard.

Sufficient!

from Solotrip
Very expensive if normal rate used (my corporate rate at £70/night was half the standard rate which seemed fair for what I got)

Big anonymous hotel which gives cheaper parking if used long term. Staff were helpful.

Room was a bit worn & overheated, but clean & very quiet at night. Bar meal was good, restaurant menu had unappetising choice. Breakfast was excellent (also very quiet at 6am)

Bus service was crowded & late (both ways) & cost £2.50 each way, the driver was very unhelpful (moving off while I was still stowing bags). The bus also stops at other Hotels which makes the journey longer than you'd expect - I would get a taxi next time.

Sad and bad

from carrom
You can-t expect too much from an airport hotel but our room looking onto a brick wall was pretty miserable. The smell of fried chips and roast meat was almost unbearable in the lobby. We`waited almost an hour for a late evening shuttle bus (no taxis available) only to be told when we eventually rang the hotel that the 11.30 shuttle driver was having his tea break.....and you had to pay for this service! All in all un-conveniently located far from the airport, smelly and charmless for 90 pounds a night. Only if you really have no alternatives.

clean and comfy

from A TripAdvisor Member
We, a family of four spent one night here before catching an early flight.
The room was very clean and big enough for the four of us, the bathroom was also spotless. The only thing that spoiled our stay was the noise from the family in the room next to us, their children screamed and banged on doors and walls untill 2 am, eventually the hotel staff rang through to the room and finally the parents controlled there kids.
Parking the car and collecting it upon return was pretty straight forward
just a shame we were next to family from hell

An Extremely noisy airport hotel!

from happytrailstoyou
I stayed at the Holiday Inn - Gatwick airport the evening before my trans-atlantic flight. My plan was to be rested before flying and arriving to a busy US schedule.......I should have stayed elsewhere.

I have often stayed at hotels near a busy airport, but this one was one of the noisiest I have ever experienced.
My 5th floor room faced the side of the hotel. It faced the street and overlooked the roof of the bar/restaurant. Not only did I have air traffic and busy street traffic, but had cooking odors. (The A/C could not keep up with the July heat and an open window was a necessity)
There were many flight crews in and out along the hall.
Since I had specifically requested the quietest room possible, I inquired at the desk and the clerk assured me that this room WAS quiet!
My advise would be to select another hotel if a good night's sleep is what you are after.

Otherwise, the hotel is very close to the airport and there is a shuttle bus for 2.50GBP (one way). The property is what you would expect from a Holiday Inn - just average/utilitarian. Everything was clean and neat, just very noisy.
I ate in the bar and was pleased with the extensive menu available there. I should have concentrated on drinking rather than eating.....maybe I would have slept better!
Happy Trails!

Good value but pretty average

from hertstraveler
We stayed here with a park and fly rate of £119 inclusive of 15 nights parking prior to our trip to the USA. Excellent value!
The room was clean and had excellent A/C it was 28c on our arrival.
The restaurant was expensive and only had a buffett available. The children (8 and 3) were charged for their meals. I thought at holiday inn kids eat for free!
Our eight year`old moved some items around in the mini bar and we were charged, however that was waved when I explained at check-out.
There is a 24 hour garage next door that sells snacks, soft drinks and magazines.
On our return the car was parked nearby and easy to collect. Staff were efficient and freindly. The public areas were very hot and lacked a/c.
The rooms were a bit small for a family of four.

Clean, comfortable and functional

from claire72
We booked a family room at this hotel and 15 days parking. Our experience was all in all quite positive. Our hotel room was clean and functional - although I was a little surprised that the children had been allocated a sofa bed to share, I think I had been expecting a rollaway each for them. Still, it was OK. The morning transfer to Gatwick was fine and the bus service ran on time, we paid about £9 for a one way transfer. Arriving back to Gatwick on Saturday morning we discovered a mass of people waiting at the designated bus stop and not knowing when to expect the bus to arrive we made the decision to get a taxi back to the hotel. The cost of the taxi was £7, plus tip and so it was slightly more expensive than the bus but was easy, convenient and comfortable. Collecting the car went smoothly we didn't have to wait for more than a few seconds to have the keys returned and found the car straightaway - we were impressed!

Glad to leave this Holiday Inn

from A TripAdvisor Member
We reserved this hotel for one night, previous to a flight to the United States, and were very glad to LEAVE!! The staff was rude, especially as we are Platinum Priority Club Members, and I walked in to the desk especially marked for us, and the rude check in clerk, said to me, "If you want service, you have to come over HERE!!" Never made a move to come to me. Also, I could barely hear him, it was a little loud in the lobby, so I had to raise my voice to be heard, which he took as yelling, and told me to control myself!!! Also, no air conditioning in the room, and ONLY a small bar of soap. There was the standard English hot pot, instant coffee, and some tea bags. There was a mini bar, and when we opened it to look at what was in there, 3 things fell out, which we promptly replaced. When it came time for dinner, you are a virtual hostage to the restaurant there, unless you have transportation to another area, about 5 miles away. We ate the buffet, and it SUCKED!!!! And, it was expensive, and we were very unhappy. After getting to sleep, we awoke to hotel bill that had 3 things from the mini bar on it, and an extra $16.00 accomodation charge, and we were paying nothing, as we got this room with our points. We then went to the desk, and they said since the stuff had fallen out of the mini bar, we were charged. Remember, we got there at 4 PM, and they slid the bill under our door at 5:00 AM. No one was ever in there to see the mini bar, but he said they have it hooked up so if something is taken, they know!!!! I would avoid this place, as it cost us 9 pounds to park overnight, and the hotel is very unatractive, because they have cars parked on every square inch of lawn space there is around the hotel.. The mini mart next door is only good for gas and soft drinks, as when we walked in, it reeked like rotting food. I hope the people from the UK do NOT think this is a great place, it isn't. My yard shed would afford the same comfort, so come on over. And, I won't charge so much. Rude Staff, very bad beds, rotten food, costs too much.....stay away.....

Friendly Staff Great Big Rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
Airport Hotels are a bit odd at the best of time. Stuck in the middle of complicated motorway systems with nothing else near them and an eclectic range of guests who are coming and going all day and are only staying one night. It would be easy to lose character and the personal touch. I found the rooms here excellent. I am slightly disabled and although I do not require special rooms, I have had problems in the past with some hotel bathrooms. This one was spacious as was the whole room. The check in staff were friendly and efficient as were the room service and dining room staff. There could have been a bigger siting area in reception, but that is a minor issue. A good place to rest your head after a long flight or before a way too early check-in.

Top Local Tips for Horley

Check out the local grocery store Tesco is right around the corner from the hotel and they offer everything. I was able to buy a few snacks for the plane ride the next day.

Gatwick transfer bus If staying here before going to Gatwick, make sure you allow enough time to check out particularly if you're going on one of the early buses. There were so many people going on my bus that it was at least 15 mins late setting off.
