Good place to stop by

from orangecat1
I got a special - something like 50 pounds a night for min. of a 2 night stay.

The hotel is clean, nice and people were friendly --- certainly well worth the price!

Bed was typcially British - firm and not that comfortable ;)

Pool and Gym were really good

Breakfast was great (included in price)

It was a little tough to lugg my lougage up the stairs - no elevators - but it was only a few steps.

If you need a taxi make sure you call 30 min (or the night before) you need one !!

A comfortable 4 star hotel

from Old_Waspy
I stayed at this very pleasant hotel for just one night. Located a short distance from Junction 5 of the M3, it has all of the facilities one would expect of a 4 star hotel. Of special note was its fitness centre which includes a pool. The standard double room I was in was quite small, but reasonably fitted out, however the bathroom was showing signs of age (rusty radiator). No WiFi internet access in rooms, although there was a modem socket. Staff were very polite. Drinks were very expensive, £3.40 for a pint of lager. Breakfast was very good, but staff did not clear table during meal which was annoying. I would stay here again.

Had a great time

We stayed here on the Valentines package, so had dinner, bed and breakfast all at a reasonable rate. Included in the package was a free glass of champagne and some chocolates - which we thought was a nice touch.

The hotel itself was very nice. Very good leisure facilities, which we made full use of. And the food was magnificent.

The staff were also extremely helpful.

I would definitely recommend.

Perfect Weekend(,)

My partner and I stayed at the Basingstoke Country Hotel on the 8th, 9th & 10th of October. We booked the offer that they had advertised in the newspaper for two night stay, Double Room, Double Bed, Breakfast Included, 3 course meal on the first night for £119.

Nice room, very clean, lots of towels, bathroom a bit small but that was fine. Staff were friendly and attentive. A slight disappointment was that they did say there was no room for us in the restaurant to have our meal, and asked if we would mind having it in the lounge - we didnt mind. However, when we arrived downstairs for our meal they said that they had found room in the restaurant for us, which was great, a nice surprise. Three course meal was divine!

Breakfast was great, a good start to set us up for the day. Didnt use the Gym, but it looked adequate. Pool, Jacuzzi, Steam Room & Sauna were REALLY good, very quiet on a Sunday, we were the only ones in there at one point.

Easy to find, not far at all from a nice little town called Hook, where for the second night we had a meal at The Raven, so there are plenty of other nice places to eat in the area.

Overall a brilliant stay!
I would recomend this hotel.

wonderful hospitality

Just returned from a weekend away at this hotel, booked on the same day,as we arrived via 'phone quoting "Daily Mail offer", £180 2nights Premium room with dinner on the first night, asked on booking if we would like to book dinner for 2nd night at £40, good job as we didn't want ot travel and as stated by previous reviewer, there is nowhere else near at hand to eat. Our room was absolutely lovely, extremely spacious with 2 queen size beds and the usual mini bar, trouser press/iron, roomsafe but plus a dining table and 4 chairs which I have never seen in a hotel room which wasn't a "suite" before. Staff were all very accommodating in reception, restaurant and bar, watch out 'tho for the exorbitant bar prices (2 glasses of cabernet shiraz cost £15!!! and 2 small cappuchinos in the Tchibo cafe were £5.90) Just because a hotel has 4 star rating doesn't, in our opinion, mean that beverages should have 4 star prices! The only other downside was that we had a room which had an adjoining door, fine on Friday when the other room was unoccupied but from Saturday afternoon onwards we had new neighbours who insisted on continually trying to make the door open from the other side, the small gap between the 2 doors also meant conversations were amplified, even quiet talking could be heard clearly so our advice would be to ask when you arrive if your room adjoins another, if it does, request one which doesn't!!l These proved to be minor irritations 'tho and all in all we had a really lovely relaxing weekend away, would recommend this hotel to anyone

Very good value - Recommended!

We stayed for 6 nights at the end of July when the hotel was very quiet. We booked their 2 night bed and breakfast deal with 1 evening meal for £119. For 6 nights this came to £357 - excellent value for money.
The hotel was clean and the room was comfortable although the bathroom was a bit basic but perfectly acceptable. The staff were very good indeed; flexible, friendly and efficient.

The food at Breakfast was very good; a small selection of fruits and cereals but a breakfast cooked to order, NOT a buffet! It was a freshly cooked English breakfast & you could choose exactly what you wanted. Our fried egss were as good as any 5 star hotels we have stayed in anywhere.

Dinner was again very good - smallish portions but well presented and very tasty.

There were a few mistakes that occurred, without which we would have awarded an Excellent rating. One day we returned to find that our room had not been serviced - we all make mistakes - but having notified reception about this we quickly received a new set of towels, an offer to clean the room and make the bed (declined) and a complementary bottle of wine was also brought to our room. Nice touch!

We did not use the leisure facilities but the pool looked wonderful and never crowded.

If we go back to this area and the 2-night deal is available then we would have no hesitation in staying there again. Recommended!

Cracking Weekend

Myself and my partner stayed at the hotel on the 10/11 June as we were visting friends in basingstoke. From the time we checked in to the time we checked out we received some of the best hospitality I have ever received in the Uk. The room was of a good size and was extremley clean. The pool and leisure club was great, all the staff were very accommodating and even did a gym program for my partner. The pool is of a good size and the tempeture was great. After having a lazy day in and around the pool we were really looking forward to our evening meal. It certainly didnt disappoint, the staff were extremley attentive and very friendly and the food was excellent. After talking at length to one of the male waiters I understand that the hotel had just recently appoint a new head chef, what a signing ! Saturday was much the same excellent in all area's and the evening meal probably was even better than the first. I would certainly recomend this hotel and will be. The hotel is a credit to the Paramount group and we will certainly be returning soon !!

Hotel OK - too many problems though

from travelgirlandboy07
Unfortunately we did not have the best experience at this hotel. I am sure on another occasion it may have been a very pleasant stay!

We went to our room and found it to be incredibly hot. It turns out the the airconditioning was broken and a few rooms were affected. We were told that it would take over a day until someone could come and check/fix the airconditioning. We opened the windows which helped, but the noise from the motorway was unbearable. Unfortunately, we were not given an alternative room and had to try and sleep in the very hot room (over 25 degrees), which was not helped by the noisy cars on the freeway. We did not expect this from a four star hotel!!

Sadly, this was not the only problem. On the first night at the hotel, whilst having dinner, a big dead insect was found in our half-eaten dinner... This put us off our long weekend and was very traumatic to say the least! The hotel offered us a complimentary dinner the following night, and we were also upgraded to a room that had working airconditioning.

It must be said that the hotel was very apologetic and was happy to try and make things right, which was very much appreciated. We had dinner at the hotel the second night of our stay, and it was actually very very good. We only wish we had been able to have two great dinners!

One other thing to note is that this hotel is a £10 taxi fare (which rose to £16 on Sunday due to taxi fare increases on this day) from the Basingstoke Train Station which was annoying to say the least. There is nothing around the hotel so every time you want to go anywhere - even if it is just for a magazine or a quick bite, you have to get a taxi if you don't have a car. The cost of taxis soon adds up!

Hope this helps. We wouldn't stay again as we had too many problems, but if we hadn't had the problems - we would recommend this hotel for anyone who has a car and wants to have a relaxing weekend!

4 stars? ..... I think not

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed there on Valentine's Day night. Room was clean and a reasonable size. Health club was OK. Pool crowded but it was a Saturday. Staff seem sparse and disinterested. There was a wedding reception on and it swamped the main bar for part of the evening which made having a quiet drink impossible. Bar staff looked at me like an alien when I asked if they sold peanuts or crisps. Asked for extra towels twice before they finally arrived. Nice (but small) cooked breakfast was ruined when accompanied by toast made from moldy bread.
Another customer also complained. They asked if we wanted a Sunday newspaper but it never arrived. All in all it might have four stars on paper but its really not four star standard. LOW LIGHT: Moldy toastHIGHLIGHT: Their inefficiency meant that our room service was not even on our bill.

A thoroughly unpleasant experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Hanover chain pride themselves on their 'Never say No' philosophy - but do not believe it for a second! The hotel claims to be a business class hotel - but my experience suggests it does not fulfil the basic needs of a business traveller. Priority seems to be set at relieving the guest of money at every opportunity. The staff are thoroughly unaccomodating, and charge for the privilage of a late check out - and if you check out late that you'll also be charged for using the gym facilities! Our double room was provided with one towel, one shower gel and no shampoo; hot breakfast cannot be served in your room until after 8am and the overpriced restaurant will not tempt you back for a second visit if you dare stay more than one night. No sense in complaining though, the manager only provides me with an incorrect telephone number for Head Office. A disgrace from start to finish

Top Local Tips for Hook

Basingstoke Town As a town it has many roundabouts and it can get confusing. The shopping centre is OK and there are a few nice resturaunts but the centre of the universe it is not. If you have kids with you then there is a large sports area off the ring road that has ice rink and swimming pools so they can be kept ammused
