Historical Traveller Reviews of Barcelo Hinckley Island Hotel

Decent hotel for business use

from reviewer123
Stayed here on business, which it’s ideal for. Good location, and rooms fine, very clean. All very nice and modern, and very large, but definitely a business/conference hotel – I don’t think I would stay here on a leisure trip.

Good alternative to Travelodge!

from tinyhobo
Used this hotel for Mallory Park Race Track and found it was a nicer alternative to a Travelodge. £55 for one night exc. breakfast but including use of spa! Nice meal served in the Brasserie and not over priced. Great location for Triumph factory and Mallory Park.

Rooms could do with a little updating in the bathroom but it was clean.

Views of a conference delegate

from timll
I wouldn't want to stay here as part of a holiday as the place is huge and regularly swamped with large conferences (such as mine). Location is great, being on the A5 next to the M69. Very practical for access, but hardly scenic (the island in its title appears to refer to the motorway junction rather than anything in the landscape).

The rooms are excellent although some of the facilities (especially the gym) are a bit tired. Some refurbishment work was underway when I was there so the situation is improving.

Two big negatives though.
1. The food was like school dinners (pre-Jamie), though this may have been a function of the conference budget.
2. The bar prices were eye-watering. A bottle of Bud was over £2, a gin and tonic over £5. As the hotel is miles from civilisation the hotel bars have no direct competition, but it really is difficult to see how they can justify charging quite so much (my group got a taxi into Hinckley itself which is not short of pubs).

Hotel for conferences, not for leisure

from A TripAdvisor Member
We got sent to the Hinckley Island Hotel when another Paramount Hotel (at Deventry) could not fulfill our reservation for some delayed refurbishment work. The member of staff that called me (admittedly at very short notice) was very apologetic and helpful, I cannot fault them for that.

The Hotel is very large and clearly geared towards the conventions, any leisure customers is likely to feel a bit out of place. The drummed-up Bodysense leisure centre was quite grubby and in serious need of refurbishment, the smell in the swimming pool was not the most inviting and the water was probably the least clean I've ever seen in my life.

The best part of our stay was the room, we got an 'executive' room that clearly had been recently refurbished, spacious and comfortable, with excellent noise isolation even though some of the guests were clearly in (very) high spirits up until late and their antics still made sleep a challenge for me (admittedly I have a light sleep)

The food in the restaurant was reasonably priced (wine aside), but the quality and choice was not up to the supposed class of the hotel. Ok, but on par with the food of a canteen in any large company.

The main drawback of the restaurant was the service though: while the staff was friendly and helpful, the kitchen was constantly struggling to keep up with the orders. This may well have been because of the enormous conference dinners they were taking care of at the same time. Nonetheless with two young children having to spend two hours dining is a challenge.

In a nutshell, it may well be a good hotel for a conference, but I definetly do not recommend it for a relaxing weekend with loved ones.

Very Clean, Great Kitchen Staff, Convention

from DotC
We used this hotel because it was the site of the 2006 DiscWorld Convention. This was the new Paramount management's and new staff's first DiscWorld Convention the third for the hotel.

Let me also preface by saying we are not normally complainers. We stay in many different levels of hotel quality and find most issues not worth mentioning.

The good:
The room was big and clean and the bed very comfy.
The cleaning staff were very friendly.

Broadband Internet is available for free in the lobby and the hub areas of all room floors. Very handy.

We accidentally slept in for the convention buffet but Nasir (waiter) and Emma (chef) made us fresh hot full English breakfast anyway. Nasir was continually helpful as were all the wait staff.

The area was lovely, even if walking around it wasnt safe. It is on a traffic island on a freeway.

One woman at the desk staff was marvelous. I did not get her name but I believe she was of Asian heritage and in her mid 20s. No extra charges showed on our invoice (unlike some other conventioners') and she got us checked out very quickly.

The not good:
The cleaning staff tend to clean even when you put the "do not disturb" sign up. We never got replacements for paper products, just a made bed and new towels, which we were trying to conserve.

For an extended stay, we had hoped to get some laundry cleaned but the prices were prohibitive. 4 pounds for one pair of underwear? 7 for a shirt?

The desk staff also did not have our room (nor most of the conventioners') ready because of some delayed flights at a local airport. Um, when you check out, you check out. The hotel doesnt have to let you stay when others (800 total) are arriving. Then unlike when we checked out, checking in was handled by confused staff since the computer system was new. This would be understandable if the staff got any better with software throughout the week. They did not.

The desk staff are not knowledgable about the area of Hinckley or Warwickshire attractions or how to get there from anything but a car. When we asked the best way to get to Warwick Castle, they were confused at first and then suggested we use the bus. We found out later that a cab would have cost the same and not taken 3 hours to get there. On a side note, Warwick Castle is so worth it!

The desk staff also are not used to (doesnt have a system for) shipping packages. We purchased things at the convention that we knew Airport Restrictions wouldnt let us check in baggage. We planned on shipping them but the hotel was very dodgy about this. We left the hotel with our purchases still there.

Hopefully, they will get better or use the next two years to prepare.

Lovely Stay

from Cakey74
My husband and I stopped at this hotel for a night due to having a function there. We had a fabulous time. There were some down points, the check in was very slow, and when I ordered a bottle of Rose wine not only was it £19 but it was like vinegar and had a screw top. On advising the bar manager I was not happy he quickly refunded my room charge and replaced it with free drinks of our choice.
Apart from this our stay was lovely, breakfast was divine so much to choose from.
Thanks for a nice stay and if we ever had anything around that area again we would defiantely stay

Good standard, needs a few finishing touches.

from Berkshiremember
I was pleasantly surprised at the good standard of this hotel. After booking a two night stay at the hotel I was concerned about its standard after reading some of the trip advisor comments. The hotel's executive rooms are a very good standard, all refurbished and smart and so is the reception area and two restaurants. There are 84 standard rooms that may not have been upgraded yet so I can not comment about the standard of these rooms. The brassiere restaurant's food was very good and had an excellent children's menu so my 4 year old was very happy. We found staff polite and helpful which made the say more pleasant. The ladies changing room in the leisure club needs updating, a bit grotty and it let the hotel down. Room service menu is good and anything for children could be ordered but the £4 tray charge per room was a bit steep and they missed drinks off the order which had to be brought back afterwards. The car park charge of £1 per night was invoiced separately for the 24 hour car park security, I have did suggested that the cost of printing this off and delivering it to us (sliding it under the room door in the middle of the night) was pointless, they should just add to the bill for all guests arriving in their own cars and tell them about it as they arrive rather than just sending the invoice to the room… that was irritating.

Great rooms at the Hinckley Island

I booked this hotel with mixed feelings after reading some of the trip advisor reviews. But Superbreaks advertised it as just having had a £4 million refurbishment so I thought it must be worth a try.
On arrival it was clear to see that this isn't the place to go if you want a quiet weekend away from it all.The hotel is huge(over 300 rooms) and there was a pool tournament taking place during our one night stay meaning it was pretty busy everywhere you turned. But I have to say we had no complaints at all.The rooms my father and I were given had only recently been re-done and
were first class. They were both tastefully decorated and spacious. We paid £35 each for one night b+b which was a bargain !!At breakfast next morning it was quite hectic which we were expecting but the staff seemed to cope very well and everything was well organised.Being such a large hotel I am sure they are used to hustle and bustle at peak times.
So all in all I would say give this hotel a try if you want a modern chain hotel which has good standards of service and quality.Cosy and compact it certainly isnt but its one I would definitely use again if I was in the area.(Best of all I'm a PNE fan and we beat Leicester 1-2)

not recommended

Take a weekend else where

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here in late October 2005 for one night.

Its a large hotel and costs around £200+ for two people to stay (large room, drinks, food).

All in all I would recommend two nights at the coast rather then here.
Bar prices don't match surrounding area, they are on the high side.

Food was good here, eat here don't stay over.

Top Local Tips for Hinckley

Dont expect to be treated well in the resturant Be prepared for a long wait if you want something from the waiters/waitresses!

FOOD! As the Island's food is expensive (I mean....13 pounds for breakfast!!). Get in your car and drive to Hinckley. Oh, and get food in town if you want to eat delivery is in short supply after midnight!!!

Barnacles Check out Barnacles restaurant, just over the other side of the A5 - magnificent!
