A Bad Experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
I thought Slaley Hall would be an ideal location for a relaxing weekend with my partner and children. How wrong I was.
From the moment we booked and did not receive any confirmation our experience was disappointing.
The spa staff were unfriendly and obtrusive enforcing petty rules without any flexibility..
We were unable to have a hot meal or obtain any childrens food in the bar. We were told their was a problem with the kitchens.(not true).
It was only when we read a very small notice board in the spa that we found out the hotel had a sickness and diarrhoea outbreak and the health authority had advised they should close down. They chose not to. When the reception staff were confronted with this and asked why guests had not been informed the reply from reception was "I,m ok".
We should have been informed and given the option to cancel.
Their way of containing the outbreak was to put a small bottle of hand wash in the toilet.
Breakfast was limited and of poor quality, and the service was poor.
We have stayed in many de vere hotels but this one was not up to standard.
A very nice hotel spoiled by poor service management and staff.

My 7yr old daughter summed it up. "slaley hall, a place you aren,t allowed to have fun"

ps: No surprise, no one has bothered to reply to the questionaire I completed.

Good, but not great

from A TripAdvisor Member
From the pictures on the website you expect something special, and to be greeted by what looked like a glorified Travelodge was a little disappointing. We had a room in the new wing which was nice, but nothing special. Very comfy beds, but the room itself wasn't much different from a Travelodge (recurring theme!) and for the price you pay, I expected something better.

Having said that, all the staff were extremely helpful. The concierge couldn't do enough for you. We ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was good, and the breakfasts had masses of choice.

Used the swimming pool and the spa, both of which were again nice but nothing special. Played a round of golf too, glorious course and really friendly staff in the clubhouse.

Considering its supposidly had a refurb recently (who knows where the money was spent) the hotel looked a little tired. All the communal areas look nice, its just a shame about the bedrooms.

... further to my last post ... (14/3/2006)

This is a further update to my last post (14/3/2006) in which I stated that you shouldn't have high expectations when visiting this hotel. I wrote to the manager of Slaley Hall and explained what had gone wrong with our visit. Today I received a very gracious letter apologising for our unfortunate experience - in fact - fully taking on board our complaints but in a very constructive manner. We have been offered a complimentary stay and will take them up on this offer to see if we were simply unlucky. I'll let you know in due course.

Great for a Wedding

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I got married at Slaley Hall and look back on our wedding weekend, and Slaley Hall as a venue in general, with nothing but good memories. Our guests also stayed and were very impressed with the rooms and the facilities. Staff were very attentive and accomodating from our initial booking until we left. The spa staff and beauty therapists were friendly and experienced. The meals were delicious and very well presented. The information staff made available, their good organisation and attention to detail made our wedding and the weekend go just as we'd hoped for - very special and personal.

Ideal Weekend Retreat

from CandAP
Part of a Christmas treat, we stayed at Slaley Hall at the end of January and loved the hotel. A weekend break, the hotel is in an ideal spot for visiting the beautiful Northumberland countryside and, with an excellent restaurant on site the hotel has everything you would need for a romantic weekend away. The room was very spacious, well decorated with excellent room service and we will certainly be returning to Slalay Hall later in the year. Well worth the trip!

Outstanding service

My wife and I decided to take a two day break at the Slaley Hall Hotel. When we arrived, which was about 2.00 pm, we registered and were told that our room would not be ready until 3.00 pm. We waited in the lounge, had tea, read the papers. When I went to check if the room was ready, I was told there was a delay and if we continued to wait in the bar, someone would come and tell us when our room was ready. Eventually, at about 6.00 pm, the manageress came to apologise for the delay. She said that as we had been kept waiting so long, we were being upgraded to a complimentary suite. When we saw the Ladywell suite, we forgot all about our wait. The room was huge with oak panelling, a seven foot wide four poster bed, a couch, arm chairs, and and a huge bay window with window seats. In addition, there was a complimentary bottle of chilled champagne waiting for us.
We has a superb meal in the dining room. I have paid far more in many restaurants and not had such good food. During the whole of our stay, all the staff were very attentive and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they kept asking if everything was OK and was there anything they could do for us. All in all we had a wonderful break, we will certainly return to Slaley Hall again and I can unreservedly recommend this hotel.

not as expected

from 2daysaway
we stayed at this hotel in october of 2003 and although this was a long time ago it was such an expensive trip and we ve stayed in far better since that i just had to write a partner had booked this hotel for a saturday night stay to give me a treat since having our daughter in may of that year.we arrived early and room not ready so we went to the leisure reminded me of a wet macdonalds.there were children everywhere in swimwear eating fries and nuggets and there was food scattered all over the floor.not a good first impression.when we enquired about the kids we were told that as it was school holidays they were allowed in the pool until about half seven at night.that was about the time of our dinner reservation!never fear we thought well have a nice steam together away from the kids!not to be.ladies and mens steam rooms are situated in individual changing rooms.still we had our pamper sessions to look forward to booked at the same time by differernt therapists!!!NOTmine had over booked and thererfor i was sitting by myself waiting for my partmner to come out whilst he then sat on his own!next off to dinner which to be fair was very nice despite the terrible service.we then decided to turn in as we had an early morming balloon flight booked at seven which incidentaly was the best thing ever but unfortunately we were kept awake for most of the night with a womans cry for help as she and her partner argued and faught in the room below and whilst i appreciate that the hotel is not responsible for its guests i fail to see why they could not hear any noise form any room nearby despite us reporting it several times throughout the night and therefore we were extremely distraught and not to mention tired!such a shame .the hotel itself was in a lovely location but rooms were basic and weve stayed in a lot better since for half the price.Be wary

Good but not great

from CG74
My husband and I stayed at The Slaley Hall for three nights for our anniversary.

We had a fantastic reception, with 3 members of staff greeting us on arrival, 2 to take to our bags and 1 to park the car. Our bags were taken to our room on arrival, even though we were early and when we collected our car keys later the concierge offered to go and fetch the car for us.

Our room (a junior suite) was spacious, well decorated and maintained.
We were disappointed with the evening meals. The food was good but nothing special and twice items we ordered were unavailable. Service was reasonable only. Breakfast was well organised, hot and pentiful.

Excellent Hotel and the most friendliness of staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Hotel was magnificent and i have never experienced such incredible service before.
The Hotel and its grounds are beautiful, there are lots of walks throughout the grounds that we tried and the japanese gardens are one to visit. My wife and i tried out the leisure club, we were given a warm welcome and towels were provided. The staff at the leisure club were excellent and very hard working team. We did not have to do anything as they got everything for us and were very helpful. The pool, sauna, steam rooms and jacuzzi were just what we needed after our walk. As we were hungry we tried their new menu in the leisure club, it was good.
The next day we tried the Golf, it was excellent and most relaxing.
Overall the best hotel we have ever satyed in and we will be back next november for our relaxing break. Especially the Leisure Club.

A catalogue of unfortunate events

from A TripAdvisor Member
I should have realised from the moment i tried to book the hotel for a girls' pamper weekend that it was destined to be a shambles.
first off, the system wouldn't allow me to book six twin rooms, so i had to phone central reservations who took my booking. A few weeks later i received a phone call from a very rude man informing me that i had made an error and the rooms were unavailable. He offered to transfer the booking to a different time and give us a free upgrade. I didn't like his manner but i accepted.
When we arrived at the hotel our room wasn't ready. No problem, we went to the spa and decided to have lunch. A nice menu, shame it took forty-five minutes for the food to arrive and even then it was stone cold. Another fifteen minutes passed before replacement food arrived, together with a complimentary glass of wine. However, the fun really started when i tried to pay and the staff had lost my credit card details.
By this time it was almost six o'clock. I had arranged to meet friends at seven for drinks, in my room. If only i had a room! You've guessed it, i still couldn't get booked in. After some help from a member of management i got in my room, minus the upgrade i had been promised. The room was the only one ready because other guests had not vacated on time.
Dinner. We waited ten minutes to be seated and were only acknowledged when i shouted across the restaurant to one of the staff who was happily ignoring the twelve of us.
The meal was ok. One of the party who has a dairy allergy (that the hotel was aware of) had to send all of her food back because it all included dairy and when we asked for coffee in the lounge there were a few sour faces. Anyway, three hours later we left the restaurant and ,by the way, that wasn't three hours because we chatted more than we ate, it just took that long to serve the food.
We had an early night that night. The staff wouldn't turn the music on in the bar and we decided we might as well turn in.
The next morning. After an early dip in the icy pool a nice warm shower was what we needed. Unfortunately, all three boilers had broken down and so there was no hot water in the hotel.
I always look forward to breakfast in a nice hotel. I'm still looking forward to the tea i ordered.
Never mind, we were all booked in for treatments in the spa on Sunday morning. The first party member went across only to be sent away because of, "unforseen circumstances", the second couldn't have her facial because her appointment hadn't been confirmed, it had and then i was taken through and whilst enjoying a lovely facial my husband received a telephone call from the spa, ( he was still at home), asking to speak to me because i hadn't turned up for my appointment. The irony of it!
Overall, a weekend that i will remember for all of the wrong reasons. The hotel staff were lovely and they have offered me compensation: a weekend break for my husband and I. I turned it down and am awaiting a letter from them. A real shame because it is a lovely place in a beautiful location.
