Friendly Country Pub/Hotelfrom shillick
The owners were always on hand for convivial chats with guests and we looked to forward to returning in the evenings to relax after a day exploring the local area.
The hotel is convenient for visiting the many sites along Hadrians Wall, National Trust properties and Kielder Water,
We look forward to our next visit to Battlesteads

Great welcomefrom wwtIpswich
Not the grandest of country hotels but comfortable and friendly and great value for money. Dee & Richard and their staff can be proud of what they have achieved. We shall return.
Excellent, warm hotelfrom Mibelean
On the way to the hotel they can enjoy the neighbourhood of Northumberland.
Another relaxing break at this fantastic hotelfrom singletrackgeocache
The refurbishment makes downstairs more contemporary, open-plan and welcoming whilst the carpets and local artwork retain the traditional feel of the building. Well done.
Our room was spacious and clean complete with tea and coffee making facilities (The biscuits etc are in the drawers! Almost missed out there!) a great place to take a bath and relax after a hard days walking/cycling. Snuggly softfurnishings complete the look.
The food is of an excellent standard. After talking to the owners it is apparent how committed they are to supporting local produce and using seasonal dishes on their menu. We had Duck Cassoulet which was absoloutely delicious! Desserts to die for and Breakfast speaks for itself... just try it.
With Summer on its way I would reccommend this hotel for people who want a traditional getaway, good food, hospitality and a happy relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely go back to the Battlesteads.
Wonderful place to explore fromfrom Flying-Haggi
We both really enjoyed our stay which was made even better by the owners Richard and Dee and their friendly, helpful staff.
We will definitely stay there again when visiting the area.

OK, to begin, Battlesteads is not actually terrible. But it is certainly not "comfortable".
What we have here is a spartan but respectable little "cafe with rooms". If you are a walker, a cycler, a fisherman or on a tight budget and you just want somewhere clean and warm to crash then Battlesteads is fine. If you want a country hotel experience, an English pub experience, or some comfort, then avoid it.
Downstairs is one large "lounge", in fact a large cafe with a little bar tucked up at one end next to a fireplace (not lit in March). The chairs and tables are newish and comfy, with a couple of leather sofas, but throughout the lighting is "hospital harsh" - no attempt to create a snuggly atmosphere whatever. A TV with the sound turned down flickers on one wall.
The menu is plain - steaks, cajun chcken, cod and chips. Not badly done, though, but certainly not interesting.
Upstairs my twin room had one bed on a 5 degree slant, and one on a 1 degree slant. The beds were hard and knobbly. In the room was a kettle, but no cup, teabags or milk.
If you come in after a hard day's walking in the Northumberland drizzle dont expect a warming bath - there was none.
The staff I met were very friendly, though overworked - I listened to the hotel phone ring for a full five minutes before it was answered.
The best thing that can be said about Battlesteads is that it is clean, friendly and reasonable value for money, but in this day and age those are not enough.
A Great Escapefrom Clin_Hoolihan
The rooms are very comfortable, clean and spacious, we had a room overlooking the front of the hotel and it was very peaceful.
The bar is very cosy and has a great fireplace, which must be very welcoming on a cold winters day. A good selection of beers and wines keep you amused throughout the evening as does the excellent, locally sourced, grub. Breakfast is something else.......a fine start to any day.
The staff and owners are very friendly and have created a great place to stay, well done.
Great stay!from Macman56
