Historical Traveller Reviews of Battlesteads Hotel

Friendly Country Pub/Hotel

from shillick
Battlesteads is a most welcoming hotel with very helpful staff. Our room was spotlessly clean and had a superb bathroom. The meals were excellent with a varied menu. There was a good choice of beers in the bar.
The owners were always on hand for convivial chats with guests and we looked to forward to returning in the evenings to relax after a day exploring the local area.
The hotel is convenient for visiting the many sites along Hadrians Wall, National Trust properties and Kielder Water,
We look forward to our next visit to Battlesteads

Great welcome

from wwtIpswich
We were met by proprietor Dee on arrival, quickly booked in, taken to our rooms and given assistance with our luggage. We were made to feel like welcome guests; nothing was too much trouble. Our room was small, but recently refurbished to a high standard - no great views from the windows, unfortunately. The bar and lounge were cosy and the restaurant immaculate. Service was excellent throughout and the set dinner menu good value at £15 for two courses with more extensive choice from the a la carte. The beer garden is not at its best at the moment as an orangery extension is currently under construction - but will be a valuable addition when completed.
Not the grandest of country hotels but comfortable and friendly and great value for money. Dee & Richard and their staff can be proud of what they have achieved. We shall return.

Excellent, warm hotel

from Mibelean
We've had a very pleasent stay at the hotel during Easter. Very friendly owners and they give you the feeling that yooir at home. Excellent choice of beer and wine and an excellent kitchen and breakfast. Clean, very nice room and bathroom. Recommendable for other people especiallly from the Netherlands to stay in this hotel after they arrived by boat in Newcastle.
On the way to the hotel they can enjoy the neighbourhood of Northumberland.

Another relaxing break at this fantastic hotel

from singletrackgeocache
We have visited The Battlesteads several times now but this was our first visit since the refurbishment that took place in March. We were, once again, suitably impressed.

The refurbishment makes downstairs more contemporary, open-plan and welcoming whilst the carpets and local artwork retain the traditional feel of the building. Well done.

Our room was spacious and clean complete with tea and coffee making facilities (The biscuits etc are in the drawers! Almost missed out there!) a great place to take a bath and relax after a hard days walking/cycling. Snuggly softfurnishings complete the look.
The food is of an excellent standard. After talking to the owners it is apparent how committed they are to supporting local produce and using seasonal dishes on their menu. We had Duck Cassoulet which was absoloutely delicious! Desserts to die for and Breakfast speaks for itself... just try it.

With Summer on its way I would reccommend this hotel for people who want a traditional getaway, good food, hospitality and a happy relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely go back to the Battlesteads.

Wonderful place to explore from

from Flying-Haggi
We stayed for 4 nights at this little hotel in the Northumberland countryside. Having arrived much later than planned we were expecting to go hungry however the staff were very helpful and ushered us into the dining room where we were served a delicious meal. The food at Battlesteads is excellent. The menu choices are, quite understandably, not what you would find in larger restaurants or hotels but there is a good variety and the quality and freshness of the food served far exceeded many other places that we have sampled. Breakfast is also extremely good with excellent portion sizes and a good choice available to guests. Our clean and comfortable room was on the ground floor and although it faced out to the front of the hotel, it was quiet with no noticeable noise from outside, we had ample tea and coffee making facilites and a TV.
We both really enjoyed our stay which was made even better by the owners Richard and Dee and their friendly, helpful staff.
We will definitely stay there again when visiting the area.
Highly Recommended.

Cant believe these other reviews

from Coltbridge
I am amazed at the reviews people have given this hotel.

OK, to begin, Battlesteads is not actually terrible. But it is certainly not "comfortable".

What we have here is a spartan but respectable little "cafe with rooms". If you are a walker, a cycler, a fisherman or on a tight budget and you just want somewhere clean and warm to crash then Battlesteads is fine. If you want a country hotel experience, an English pub experience, or some comfort, then avoid it.

Downstairs is one large "lounge", in fact a large cafe with a little bar tucked up at one end next to a fireplace (not lit in March). The chairs and tables are newish and comfy, with a couple of leather sofas, but throughout the lighting is "hospital harsh" - no attempt to create a snuggly atmosphere whatever. A TV with the sound turned down flickers on one wall.

The menu is plain - steaks, cajun chcken, cod and chips. Not badly done, though, but certainly not interesting.

Upstairs my twin room had one bed on a 5 degree slant, and one on a 1 degree slant. The beds were hard and knobbly. In the room was a kettle, but no cup, teabags or milk.

If you come in after a hard day's walking in the Northumberland drizzle dont expect a warming bath - there was none.

The staff I met were very friendly, though overworked - I listened to the hotel phone ring for a full five minutes before it was answered.

The best thing that can be said about Battlesteads is that it is clean, friendly and reasonable value for money, but in this day and age those are not enough.

A Great Escape

from Clin_Hoolihan
I stayed at the Battlesteads Hotel in December with some friends and it was excellent, I was in two minds as to whether to write this review as 'best kept secret' and all that. It is a great place if you want to just get away from it all for a night or two, for me the fact that there was no mobile phone signal just made it feel more relaxing.....I know, I could have switched it off anyway but when there's no signal it's somehow better !

The rooms are very comfortable, clean and spacious, we had a room overlooking the front of the hotel and it was very peaceful.

The bar is very cosy and has a great fireplace, which must be very welcoming on a cold winters day. A good selection of beers and wines keep you amused throughout the evening as does the excellent, locally sourced, grub. Breakfast is something else.......a fine start to any day.

The staff and owners are very friendly and have created a great place to stay, well done.

Great stay!

from Macman56
Very clean, spacious rooms. Very friendly owners and staff. Food excellent including vegetarian options. A little extra time left betwwen courses at dinner and breakfast would be good (main course delivered during last mouthful of starter!) , but this is a minor point. Highly recommended. Will definitely visit again.

An excellent stay

from newland1
Stayed just the one night. Salmon fishing on the South Tyne. The receptionist immediately put our wet clothes in the boiler room to dry out. The single room was fine, clearly the hotel recentely been refurbished. Would need to be an engineer to work the digital TV. Evening meal excellent, nothing fancy just good quality locally sourced food cooked simply . Breakfast outstanding.Very impressed..will definately recommend & return .

Visits to Hadrians Wall, National Trust Properties, Kielder Water A car is desirable unless you are a rambler.
