Historical Traveller Reviews of De Vere Belton Woods Hotel

from HR-7
Myself and my partner stayed for one night in Sep 06. We were offered military discount, which was pleasing. We stayed in a superior room, which although was on the groun floor had patio doors out to a shaded area with wrought iron table & chairs. This overlooked the start of the golf course. The staff were very friendly and recommended a fantastic hotel in Grantham, as we did not want to eat in the hotel itself. The breakfast available the next day was vast - fruit, breads, yoghurts, cereals all of which were very fresh and well presented. As the restaurant that morning was busy, the service was a little slow but this was a minor point.
The pool was very clean, if a little on the chilly side, yet the sauna/steam/jacuzzi were all excellent.
The decor was not traditional, it was almost a souped-up travelodge, but this was not an issue for us.
I recommend the hotel for a peaceful stay and certainly was above average.

Saturday Night Fireworks

from cliver029
Good Hotel having just finished having a major refurb of the bedrooms so everything was good and clean. we ate in the Stantons Rest on the Sat evening, food was ok but on Sunday evening it was just a carvery, so be warned if you want Ala Carte you would need to go upstairs to the 'Manor' which is much more expensive. Also be aware that it is a large hotel with lots of golfers roaming around over the weekend so don't expect an intimate atmosphere especially when at half past ten on Saturday evening there was a major fireworks display (maybe for a party) which dominated the skyline for over 20 minutes.

Impressive Drive Up

from SmileyDave
As We Turned Off The Main Road In To The Hotel Grounds It Looked Very Impressive. Driving Up Through Vast Lawned Areas Overlooking The Golf Course. From Getting Out The Car To Walking In To The Reception And Booking In Took A Very Short Time. Although From Reception To Our Room Was Quite A Walk Albeit Pleasent . Very Spacious Room With Added Sofa And Table And Chairs. Even Playstation Plugged In To Tv. ( Extra Charge )Choosing To Eat In The "Tapps Bar We Were More Than Happy With The Food And Friendly Service. Two More Formal Eateries Are The Brassirie And The Manor Which You Had To Book In Advance (Quite Busy That Night )On The Downside Drinks I Thought Were Extremely Expensive. A Pint & A Vodka & Coke £9.80 .Lastly The Spa Well Wrth A Visit Everything You Would Need - Gym - Sauna - Steam Room - Jacuzi - Squash - Pool . Penty Of Outdoor Activities Too Although At Extra Cost.Cannot Fault The Place Except For The Booze Prices - Dont Forget Your Gym Kit & Trunks

This hotel used to be something special we have stayed here over the years 6 times however note the past tense, we stayed here for 3 nights in October 2006 and could not wait to get home.
Reception was pleasant however they had no record of our dinner reservations that i made when i booked for 7pm each evening. the hotel had no record of this booking the only time they could serve us was at 8.45pm

The room was nice and large however we were allocated a 'disabled' room complete with bars and toilet guard and a sink height that was set for wheelchair users. The bathroom was freezing there was no heating in the bathroom. we only used the bath once because of this maybe cost saving on heating?

We had been driving for 5 hours to get here so decided to order room service - what a joke. we ordered at 3.15pm, at 4.45 our food arrived COLD - 1 1/2 hours to get room service!!

The food and service in the resturant was appaling, I waited 20 minutes to place a drinks order by which time the starters had already arrived. The resturant was very very busy so we put the poor service down to this. The soup was absolutely awfull looked and tasted like pond water. Pate 'parfait' was dreadfull - no taste. the main course was just dumped in front of us. very dissapointing.
Breakfast was an improvement but not as good as they used to be, eggs used to be cooked infront of you by the breakfast chef, now they are shrivelled up on fried bread under the hot lights, paper napkins instead of linen. butter portions instead of butter pats, no tablecloths, no menu for ordering of porrige, boiled eggs etc. All smacks of cost saving.
The swimming pool was heaving and there was no way to get a comfortable swim, it was school half term so this probably explained this. The gymnasium was very good and a very good size.
We cancelled the 2nd evening in the resturant because of the first experince and the fact that menu was identical to the previous night, can the chef not do daily specials?
We tried the room service menu again thinking that they would not get it wong again. silly me. The room service phone took 3 attempts for the phone to be answered, when the order was taken we were told 20-25 minutes for our food. it took one hour to arrive with half he order missing (drinks and food extras) the waiter did however return shortly with these. The food was not cold but not that you could call it hot either! just luke warm.. Maybe they should fit microwave ovens to the rooms?

The last day (hurrrah) Sunday was the best day of all, we did have a pleasant evening meal in the carvery, the only critisism i would have would be the vegetable selection which was a little plain considering how much is paid i expected more than just plain boiled vegetables. maybe the chef has no imagination?

The checkout was fine however when we tried to explain to the receptionist our problems she just ignored our comments and continued to process our checkout. No pleasantries like 'did you have a nice stay?'

Well as you can guess from this review we didnt have a nice stay, this ruined our wedding anniversary, we used to love coming to Belton Woods because of the special treatment we felt you got here. not anymore.. we will avoid this DeVere in future.

an absaloutly terrible hotel

from Bob12
what a disaster

The hotel staff didnt know that these rooms didnt have a window which i specifically asked for.
The bathroom smelt horrendous
Our room was so dated and tired that we had to move
The food was small and overpriced
The beds were like trampollines,
The room serivce couldnt get you what you wanted,
The hotel porter when we arrived wouldnt help us lift the suitcases onto the trolly
The room didnt have a fridge which is standard in any decent hotel
The internet connection costed £15.00 for 24 hours, (it costs me £15.00 pounds a month for my internet connection)

so basically, DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!

Pick your room with care !!

from starman262189
The hotel is basically a standard modern style that caters for activities and functions. We stayed 3 nights and my family had two rooms.
The hotel now looks rather worn out, especially the tappa bar ( a casual area/ bar) so do not expect too much. Rooms in need of some TLC. I was informed by the duty manager that they are planning a re-furbishment between November and Feb 2007.
Advice- the ground floor rooms have already be re-furbished and the best views are over the golf course.
If you want a quiet night, book a room as far from reception as possible- the hotel caters for lots of weddings and golf parties and other functions- the corridoors become VERY noisey in the early hours with reverlers
Staff are friendly and helpful.
Food - Tappa Bar-ok, good for kids.
Food-Brasserie- a little expensive and served by staff who could do with a little more training.
Breakfast- good, on a par with Hilton Hotels
Would we go back.........possibly, once the re-burbishment is done and we can get a quiet room.

A Nice One Night Stay

from KentWoman
We spent only one night at the Belton Woods and enjoyed our stay.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and our room was actually ready a bit earlier than advertised. The room was pleasant with two very comfortable double beds. We had been told the room had been newly refurbished but I thought the bathroom, although clean, was quite dingy and didn't look as new as the rest of the room.

We all enjoyed our evening meal, but, although the staff were friendly and pleasant, the service was a bit slapdash.

We ordered continental breakfast in our room the following morning. This was excellent. Croissants, pain au chocolat, cereal and a lovely array of fresh fruit, cheese and ham.

Overall, we felt the Belton Woods was quite a faceless hotel and probably a little too big for its own good. It is probably a wonderful place to come if you are a golfer, but just doesn't have that luxurious, special feel that some smaller 4 star hotels have.

Good stuff - again!

Reception is very good - friendly, courteous and efficient.
It's worth the extra for rooms overlooking the golf courses which are large and comfortable
The restaurant, although dearer than the carvery, is well worth it if you can run to it. More space and more relaxed with quiet and efficient service and excellent food.
The pool and leisure facilities are excellent - although you have to get your timiing right if you want a quiet swim.
For an "away from it all break" it's great. It's in a interesting area when you can be pampered and, for a leisure break, some of the deals are amazing value.
This was our third visit - we are already looking forward to the next one!

Not that great

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have just visited the aforementioned hotel and just thought I would right my comments

Bedroom - Good and very comfortable

Breakfast - Good and Plentiful

Dinner - Good quality but Expensive

Reception Staff - Helpful and Knowledgeable

Catering Staff - Not very helpful, inexperienced

Golf Course - Played to death and in very poor condition particularly the greens

Golf Staff - A certain member of staff had a chip on his shoulder and was totally rude and ignorant

Pool - Good, but very busy

Some problems but would stay there again

from jredfern
Have just spent a long weekend with Family.I would have rated this hotel higher if the food served on their hot buffet menu had been edible. The first night we had food from the menu and this was excellent but made the mistake the following eve by choosing the all inclusive choice. If I had had to pay the price on the menu I would have complained. The turkey was dry,the roast potatoes would not even cut with my knife so I didnt bother tasting them, the vedge was swimming in butter,I left everything but a small slice of turkey. The lamb my husband had was much better which was just as well as he left everything else on his plate also. This was the only negative point of our stay, the room a golf view superior was okay very clean and comfy even though the furnishings were tired and the wallpaper coming away from the wall.Breakfast was good, The pool was very good as was the golf. Staff we encountered were helpful and friendly. We would return to this hotel but not choose the all inclusive food deal.

Top Local Tips for Grantham

Road Works Don't drive through the centre of Grantham as they are digging the road up, with long delays

People The people of Grantham are so nice and very friendly, which we are not used to.

Belton Village It is worth the short walk down to the Village of Belton (just across the road at the main gate). Many of the houses are beautiful and historical. The church was open for visitors and for £10 you can visit Belton House.
