You get what you pay for.

We booked through Shearings a 3 night night half board holiday at what would thought was a cheap rate. The rooms were pretty awful and urgent needed of updating. This meant we spent the minimum of time in our small room. The food was better than we expected, the staff were excellent and the location was central. The old saying " You only get what you pay for"is very true when it comes to the Esplanade Hotel. Overall we though it was good value for what we paid. If you are the kind of person that uses their room for more than a base then this hotel is probably not suitable for you. The entertainment was slightly amateurish but amusing. What you would expect in a pub.

As a travelling couple, we have stayed at various hotels in England and we can honestly say that the Esplanade Hotel was one of the best we have stayed at in a long time. The staff went out of their way to make sure we had an enjoyable stay and nothing was too much trouble for them. All of the staff from the cleaners to the management are a credit to the shearings company. Our room was relativly spacious with lovely views over the bay and it was always clean and tidy, the meals were excellent, good size portions and always steaming hot. The entertainment was very varied from comedy to quality vocalists and it was always first class. My only complaint is that we were not there long enough and we will definitely be revisiting this lovely hotel.

This is the worst hotel that we have ever stayed in. The hotel is in a very poor state, needs a complete upgrade. The room was so small & cramped. The food was edible, but the portions were extremley small. Service was very poor we would not be visiting this hotel again.

My wife and I have just had a long week-end at the Esplanade and we really enjoyed it. As a retired coach driver and painter and decorator I feel I am experienced enough to comment. Yes the hotel could do with an upgrade in decoration but the place is certainly acceptable and clean. The food was not only varied and well cooked, it was well presented on warm plates. The knives, forks and glassware was always served clean and unmarked ( always a good sign) and the waiters were better than I have met in more expensive hotels. The room we had was clean and the usual tea making facility there but no telephone. Plenty of hot water and the beds very comfortable. The evening entertainment was easy going and pleasant. When we where there most guests were retired and the hotel isn't really for those who want to noisily drink the night away. We found it excellent value, but we would advise paying a bit extra and book a sea view room and overlook the sea. The staff and food are certainly their biggest assets. Car parking is plentiful and free. I would advise the management however to look to improving the general appearance of the place as it is what lets the hotel down. Add a painter and decorator to your staff. We would certainly return for a break, we found it good value.

First impression were not very good, the building needs lots of money throwing at it. The double room was actually a single with a double bed squeezed in. The bed itself should be have been retire some years earlier and was uncomfortable being 'wirey' and 'creaky'. The shower room and toilet room was hopelessly cramped.
Otherwise, everything else was fine, great service from pleasant staff, fair food, and a good selection of evening entertainment. However, having had several holidays with WA Shearings, we won't be visiting that particular hotel again.

We had a lovely holiday at the Esplanade. The hotel was comfortable and clean, but could do with some redecoration. The staff were very pleasant and very helpful.

We have stayed in a number of Shearings Hotels and rated this as the very best for service, from all of the staff we encountered and the quality of the meal presentation, serving and content. Such friendly staff with a personal feel addressing us by our names from the first step through the doors. The Hotel is in need of general redecorating but is clean, tidy and well-presented and our room was perfectly satisfactory. Good value and a pleasant stay.

Food was good with varied menu served by pleasant friendly staff. Staff in general were friendly. Bar stock was limited and a bit pricey. Although clean and comfortable, the hotel is in desperate need of extensive refurbishment.

The coach journey was tiresome. The worst part was changing from the feeder coach atWarrington. Long time. The journey down to paignton was not too bad. The hotel was as reported, needs a lot of money spending on it.the bedrooms was very basic. No shower in our room. Not acceptable. The meals were good and the service was very good. The bar service was very good. The entertainment was good, but we will not be going to this hotel again.
