We stayed on an all inclusive basis - meals good, room and general amenities very clean. The thing that made it for us was the entertainment - Mike was absolutely brilliant. The cabaret acts he booked were also good, but Mike was 'Mr Entertainment' himself - excellent.
Wonderful Experience

Reading some of the reviews here I felt I just had to relate our experience.
Hotel was really good. Rooms [as was the rest of the hotel] were clean so no complaits there!
Meals, choice and presentation, were excellent. Service could be slow at times but this was NOT an issue as we were on holiday!
All the staff, without exception, were helpful, friendly and informative.
Lovely place, hotel and staff and we will go again without a doubt.
THANK YOU SHEARINGS!

This hotel is probably one of the worst that we have ever been to, it has a maze of stairs and a vintage lift. the rooms are small and unkept. we had to swap rooms because my wife need a shower due to disability. The room we were given was extreamly small an the wash basin was next to the bed. I must say that all of the staff were extreamly helpful and without them we would not have stayed.
Good bar staff.

Hotel looked great but bedroom left a lot to be desired not very clean. Meal times were a disaster although there was plenty of staff the service was very very slow. A word of praise for the bar staff who were friendly and efficient.I don't think we will return
Staff excellent, shame about bedrooms

A Shearings Coach holiday. The hotel on the ground floor was top class, i.e. ballroom, reception, dining room, bar facilities, all very good. Staff are excellent, very helpful. But the bedroom we had let the hotel down. The toilet system tank leaked, shower roof leaked when it rained. In all the room was very small and not to clean. TV very old remote broken don't think we would go again.

Taking a 70 year old wasn't going to be easy but this was a great hotel with adequate facilities for those unsteady on their feet
The food was good, considering how much was prepared, didn't see a lot going back to the kitchen wasted, and extra portions provided if requested
Service a little slow at busy times but very flexible eating times so easy to avoid rush
Prime location on front overlooking gardens and within a 5 min walk of harbour but everywhere else is at the top of a hill
All inclusive bar was just that and staff very sociable with and quick service, never waiting long to be served
Varied entertainment, some better than others but none outstanding

We went on the all inclusive 4 day break (by car). We thought it was tremendous value. Our party ranged from 16 to 80 years and there was something for all of us. All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful, just the right attitude. The rooms may be considered on the small side but it is a very old hotel. It was very clean and comfortable. There are steps access to the dining room (2 lots of about 6) but didnt bother our 80 year old. It could be a problem to the less mobile, but if you're that bad, then many hotels would be a problem, as many would have some steps somewhere. There is a lift but there is still some stair access to some rooms (about 3 or 4 steps) due to the old character of the corridors. It is a modernised old Victorian hotel. The only problem we had was the limited parking. However, we never failed to get a space, but had a tight fit a couple of times. But there is alternate parking very close and it is cheap. We thought the meals were very OK and not too small. Just typical hotel size portions. I personally dont want 3 huge courses and it seems a waste to have a big plate full and leave 1/2 of it. You could ask for more veg etc and we found plenty of bread rolls and they were out for you to help yourself to - maybe this wasnt visible to all seats. The choice and quality was good. The entertainmnet was excellent. We went down to eat at about 6 and had something to do all evening until the bar closed. There was some sort of dancing/music to start, bingo, then a quiz and the cabaret act. The hotels own hosts were very good indeed and the outside acts were good too, the comedian was brilliant. The all inclusive deal with the drinks was brilliant, basically you can have what you want from behind the bar between 6 and 11 pm. The aveage age was the 60+ age group but there were plenty of 40+ and 50+. The oldies were definately more swinging on the dance floor!! Our 16 year old had a great time, so did our 80 yr old. There were no little children running around which I know can annoy some holiday makers. Everything was relaxed and easy going and we really didnt want to come home.
I would not stay at this hotel again

We stayed at this hotel recently as part of a WA Shearings Coach Holiday.
We were disappointed both with the standard of accommodation and the catering.
The hotel was obviously a grand old Victorian hotel. It has since been refurbished and modernised with en-suite facilities. The rooms appear to have been divided to provide more rooms, resulting in cramped accommodation in many rooms.
We were allocated a room on the 4th floor. T
he antiquated lift only serves 3 floors, and access to the 4th floor is up another flight of stairs. The room we were allocated (409) was a very small room with a tiny window, with a top section that opened no more than 9 inches. It was unbearably stuffy. In view of the fact that when booking I had made a point of informing the clerk that my wife was an Asthma sufferer, and on medication for this condition, I feel that this was not acceptable. I immediately contacted Reception and requested another room. I was offered another room (330) on the 3rd floor. This room was marginally better, but still not of the quality that we have come to expect. It suffered from lack of storage and insufficient room to sit comfortably, or read any printed matter, due to the poor lighting. The en-suite was adequate, but spoilt by the fact that the handbasin was in the main accommodation.
The Dining Room was very overcrowded by virtue of the fact that there were too many tables in the space provided. It was impossible to walk between tables when they were all occupied. The food was sub standard. A Full Breakfast was poor in quality and quantity. Eggs, whether boiled or poached were invariably hard boiled, poached was defined by removing the shell. Fried Eggs were edible, Scrambled Eggs were like rubber. The only good breakfast were Grilled Kippers, which were excellent. There was no water provided on the tables, Bread Rolls frequently had to be requested, as did items of missing cutlery and condiments. In general the Dinners were adequate.
The entertainment was very good, there was something for everyone on most nights. The luggage handling was up to WA Shearings standards.
In short, I would not stay at this hotel again, and I could not recommend it.
