A Touch of Luxury - family friendly

from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked a family room on a special break _£99 per room per night which included Crealy Country Park Tickets, DBB.
Our room had a four poster bed and a separate area with two twin beds - it was immaculate. The bathroom was newly done and had a whirlpool bath.
Dinner was superb and no extra charge for the children to choose what they wanted from the A la Carte menu - breakfast was also good.
Couldn't fault it at all.

Good Stay

from Chanksie
Booked a nights stay at the Thistle, however after reading some of the comments on this website I nearly changed my mind!
I agree with the comment regarding the parking and it is not made clear at the time of booking about the extra charge of £5 per 24 hours for car parking (if you are lucky enough to park in front of the hotel) Everything about the stay was fine. When checking in my room was upgraded at no extra cost and there was no sight of 70's retro decor. The hotel was spotless, staff friendly and breakfast very edible, with lots of options to choose from. Yes the hotel can be noisy but remember it is smack bang in the centre of Exeter.

Ok

The hotel itself was very grandly decorated and the reception area was impressive. I stayed in a single room which was quite small but nicely decorated and very clean, the bathroom looked newly decorated too, with an excellent shower. The bed was a 3/4 bed and very comfortable. I was in room 205 which was right at the front so very light but also noisy due to the busy road that runs in front of the hotel. The location was excellent as it was only a two minute walk from the high street. As it was a business trip the company paid and so I was quite happy with the hotel, but not sure it was worth the full money that was advertised on the board. All in all I was quite happy during my stay and would not be worried about staying there again but would probably stay somewhere else if I was paying.

Very poor

from A TripAdvisor Member
Very poor standard throughout, reservation had been lost, sink in bathroom was broken, couldn't open the window because of noise and smell from kitchen below. Carpet and curtains in the hallways stained and patched up with tape! Having said that the receptionist was very nice and helpful.

We've stayed at the MacDonald Southgate in Exeter before which was excellant, there is no comparision, this hotel needs a major refurbishment and a change of management.

Lovely Hotel, Great Service

from the_curl
Stayed at the Thistle at the beginning of October 2005. Loved the hotel, beautiful Victorian entrance hall, fabulous stairway, great room.

Saw previous reviews about carparking but managed to get a space in the carpark at the hotel both nights - it does say on all the websites that carparking is limited so you take pot luck (you can't really complain at them for something that they tell you about before you book!).

Reception girls were great - very helpful with all requests and when I asked for information, if they didn't know, they'd get someone who did (this was really good when we wanted to have a look round Exeter) and all of the girls we talked to there couldn't have been more helpful!

Our room looked like it had just been refurbished and was really nice.

The food in the restaurant was exceptional (as was the service from Alex & Claudina), shame we didn't try it on the first night otherwise we'd have dined there both nights!

Bar service was good (lewis looked after us excellently)

Being in the city centre, it makes a great base to wander round Exeter and there are even a couple of parks nearby if you fancy a bit of peace and quiet.

Overall, we would thoroughly recommend the Thistle Exeter!

Refused to stay.

Booked this hotel on line. After a two hundred mile trip and a business meeting went to the Hotel to find that I could not park on the premises. I was advised to "go to our overspill car park".

Down an alley and behind the building next door. This is not an overspill car park indeed it does not even belong to the hotel. It is a piece of concretre in a back street. As I found this totaly unaceptable for a hotel whose bill would have been in excess of £160.00 for the night. I refused to stay and gave myself another two hundred mile trip.

The hotel have charged me for the refusal in spite of me politely explaining that I found the parking facillity unaceptable. All in all a hotel, in this price range, that provides its guests with a one in three chance of secure parking and bills anyway a badly run business.

Be warned.

lost the plot

poor staff who obviously cant recognise a customer, and when approached dont know what to do. No smile, no eye contact, little to no information.
Food out of the packet, usually fried---------------- keep away!

Horrilble hotel

from highlandspring
I can never work out how the star system in this country works. What i can tell you this hotel does not deserve a four star rating, three would be generous
From the moment you arrive it is depressing even on a bright summer day!It is situated opposite station, and car parking is very limited.Even parking outside to unload my cases resulted in me being todl off by another visitor! You are then told by the reception staff to park your car around the corner and pay £5 or be clamped.Nice welcome.
The lift was out of order, no offer was made to help with our luggage even when passed struggling on the stairs by various staff members, when arriving and leaving.
Luckily the room was on the first floor!Approached via a depressing corridor with very worn carpets(patch repaired) you enter a room which was OK at best, but not 4 star standard, unless you count the numerous cards littered around the room advertising the movie channel and the like. The bathroom was tiled in green circa 1970's and was very poor.
When i asked the receptionist to recommend an Italian restaurant she informed me there was only one in Exeter, Pizzza Express. As i have stayed in Exeter i knew this was rubbish, but was under the impression i may receive some good information.Actually, what a ridiculous answer for a city the size of Exeter!I went to the bar for a drink,do not bother it is dreadful.
The breakfast was foul, served by very unfriendly staff.
I could go on and on but just take my advice do not stay here. In the past i have stayed at the Southgate and the Barcelona. This time very small mindedly i thought i would try the Thistle ,as it was slightly cheaper. I saved £15 less the £5 parking you do not pay at the other 2.
I made a mistake, i advise you do not do the same, this hotel is a joke, requires major refurbishment and a major staff training programme to boot!

Stellar Staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have stayed overnight at the Thistle on several occaisions, and whilst i have always found their rooms adequate and their breakfasts average (do NOT take it in your room, it has always been stone cold and wrong, but then again i like cold toast!), i am writing about their conference facilities. The conference rooms are..."classic" in decor, but are very spacious and have huge windows (a rarity!). They also have a very efficient Air conditioning system.

The staff really impressed me- meticulously organised and every tea break, food break and even the cleaning up were perfectly timed (no clattering around with cups halfway through a bigwig's speech). The on-duty manager was always around and very pleasant, and when another staff member saw me stuck out in the entrance way greeting people where there is no air conditioning, she first fetched me a glass of ice water, then had another member of staff help her find a fan for me.

The conference went extremely smoothly (another rarity!), and i firmly belive it was in a large part dependent on the high quality of the staff.

I have stayed at the Thistle, Exeter, four times in the last year. I have always found it to be clean and tidy and the staff are always very friendly and helpful. On top of that you can often find a discount on the internet - I paid £30 on one occasion including breakfast!

The car park is very small but there is a public car park nearby. Saying that, I have always found a space outside.

I would recommend the Thistle highly. I have stayed in B&B's in Exeter that are more expensive and not as good. You're right opposite the central railway station too.

Top Local Tips for Exeter

Donj't go to Mambo!! Really weird mix of music, quite a bit of trouble kicked off and a weird mix of music, one second playing S Club 7, the next playing some head banging hard house

21a Cathedral Yard My wife and I reserved a table at this resturant in advance and we were glad that we did. A small, and friendly resturant with an imaginative menu and a welcome use of local produce. Well worth a visit.

... Stay away from the Thistle!!
