Historical Traveller Reviews of Ibis London Gatwick Airport Hotel

Good value, not a destination hotel.

from Kubla
This is a hotel for those who need a place to stay for a night or two when catching flights. For about 50 GBP, you will get a clean room, average sized by European standards, with air conditioning. The latter was a plus for us as it was unusually hot in England in July 2005, though the A/C mysteriously quit in the middle of the night, only to be working again in the morning.

It is what it is. It's not a destination hotel. There is nowhere to eat within easy walking distance besides other hotels. That's par for the course at many other locations near airports. It is good value for the money for those that just need a place to stay, though. They also offer day rates if you only need to crash for a few hours between flights - I think it was 35 GBP for 8 hours.

The only problem we had with the staff was that they rang us with a wake-up call we hadn't ordered at 6:00 am. Didn't bother us too much but I sure hope the fellow who needed that call got up in time!

We stayed two nights and ate at the hotel's cafe both nights. The food was good, but it took almost 45 minutes to arrive each night. Be aware that if you order a pepperoni pizza, it comes with rocket leaves. I think you might have to be English to appreciate rocket leaves on a pizza...

You can go into London by train via the station at Gatwick airport. Another reviewer mentioned the Southern travelcard, and that's definitely the best way to do it.

If you just need a clean, cheap place to stay for a night or two, this hotel fits the bill very nicely. If you need someplace with outstanding amenities, or close to attractions, you'll have to pay more elsewhere.

good value

stayed one night july 9th pre flight from Gatwick. This was our second stay at the Ibis, as it is ridiculously cheap (especially if you trawl a few internet sites). We were happy last time and in fact thought it had improved.
Pick up from and to the airport was easy, we were at the hotel long before the official booking in time, but no problem there.
Rooms are basic but clean and the bathroom quite large. It's not the sort of place to look for home comforts, just to rest up before or after a flight.
It has everything you need if your not after a high star standard hotel, but even at a basic level it is good value for money, quiet and run well.

not what we expected

from princeton
Based on the great reviews on Trip Advisor, we stayed at the Ibis Hotel Gatwick for one night before our flight back to the states. We were very disappointed with the hotel. It has a very "institutional" feel.
Towels were paper thin, and when we phoned the desk to get an additional towel, had to go down to the desk ourselves and get it. The worst part was the smell of our room, and the hotel itself. Our room was supposed to be non-smoking, but had a bad odor to it, noticed there were cigarette butts below our opening window. Imagine a rectangular room, add a prefabricated bathroom unit in one corner, indoor/outdoor stained carpet, foam mattresses with no boxsprings...you get the idea. The hotel is kind of isolated, and there are no restaurants within walking distance. There is, however, a restaurant in the lobby, which looked adequate. If your choice of accommodations is based on price alone, you might consider the Ibis. We, however, will not be staying there again.

Booked this hotel on the strength of the reviews on trip advisor. We stayed one night - that was enough! Very average hotel. No hairdryer. Taxis did not come when we ordered them and ended up being late for our flight. Staff were friendly, but the service was very slow. We would not stay there again.

Excellent value for money

My son and I stayed here on 11th July after a tiring flight from Egypt. I called the hotel in the wee small hours to confirm reservation, was given implicit instructions where to find the courtesy phone and the transport arrived within minutes to take us to the hotel.

The staff were very efficient, the rooms were immaculate ( although a hair dryer wouldve been nice).

I would definitely recommend this hotel for convenience to Gatwick, value for money and a comfortable room.

Very Good Hotel Value at Gatwick Airport

from hkto
We stayed at IBIS Gatwick for 2 days in July 05. Room was very clean and bigger than in other IBIS I stayed in France. Breakfast (all u can eat) is very good, served in the lobby and costs 5 GBP. Kitchen is open late and hot meals can be ordered late at night. Wine and beer is available at the hotel. Staff was polite and helpful.

Hotel charges 3 GBP for each passenger to go to and/or from Gatwick. Hotel is not as close as website specifies, up to 10 min ride from the airport. Taxi prices from the airport vary, can be around 10 GBP.

It costs 10 GBP pp to buy a day TRAVELCARD from Gatwick on Southern only. Card includes round trip from Gatwick to Victoria Station and unlimited use of metro and buses for 1 day. Same deal is 17 GBP for family of three (2 adults and a child). Gatwick Express is much more expensive train which is about 10 min faster than Southern.

To summarize IBIS Gatwick is an excellent value if you plans include overnight at Gatwick.

Great Value for money

Although it took a bit of finding (I should have printed that map before we left!), the Ibis at London Gatwick is great value for money. The service at the front desk was excellent, the meals were lovely (especially the Radicchio Pizza!) and the restaurant and bar service were fantastic as well. Gomez at the bar made us feel very welcome.

The room was plain, but had everything we needed. There was a phone, tea/coffee service and tv. The hotel is very new so the bathroom looked like it hadn't even been used. It was also very quiet, no unexpected airport noise!. All in all, a hotel with great location, service and good facilities. I don't expect you will do much better for the money!

Excellent Deal

Outstanding service. Staff was extremely friendly. Rooms were spotless and well provided. 10-minute shuttle to Gatwick Airport. Ample breakfast.

Clean and close to Gatwick

from jmurphyjohnson
This a great place to stay close to Gatwick. Staff is friendly and rooms are modern and clean. The shuttle service to the airport is efficient and inexpensive, but make sure you book the shuttle early as it is quite popular with the guests. I would stay here again, and would even consider staying here and taking the Gatwick Express train to and from London for dinner, sightseeing, or a show, it's that great of a value.

Good stay!

Stayed here one night before an early flight the next day.

PROS: Clean, simple, staff was very friendly, excellent hot shower, close to Gatwick, shuttle service to/from Gatwick, nice little bar/restaurant in the lobby, internet service available.

GREAT English pub/restaurant called "The Manor" about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. You must check out this great pub if you stay here.

CONS: The bed and pillows were hard as rocks!!

Overall - great value and clean place. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.
