Good value, decent rooms

Stayed one night before we left for home back in the States. The rooms were decent size, clean and comfortable. The furniture was a little worn. The restaurant was average and the wait staff didn't know anything about the wine they served which was kind of irritating. The bar staff didn't know how to mix many drinks so you had to tell them how to make them. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere so there isn't a lot to do nearby. This didn't bother me because the people at this hotel were so much nicer and friendlier than most of the people that I dealt with in London who were very rude, unhelpful and generally incompetent. The nice thing about this hotel is that it runs a shuttle to the Gatwick airport so it is a convenient place to stay if you have a flight to catch the next morning and the room rates were excellent.

Terrible experience, appalling service

Please do not stay at this awful place. It advertises parking deals for people going on holiday from Gatwick, but you will be lucky to find a proper parking place. Not only that, but many of the spaces on the shuttle bus - an essential part of the deal, were full. Lots of people had to fork out for a taxi - you might as well have paid more to stay at the Meridien.

It took us a whole hour to check in - no exaggeration. The receptionist did not have a clue about how to use the computer system. By that time it was too late to go out for something to it, so had to make do with overpriced chips from the unpleasant bar that took ages to arrive.
Room barely clean and all furnishings tatty and frayed.

It is absolutely awful had to change rooms three times before there was one that was clean enough to sleep in. The food and drink is really expensive and of very poor quality. The staff are dreadful, had no idea what was going on and when we complained they still did nothing.

Filthy Dirty Hell Hole!!!

Took well over an hour to find a parking space when we first arrived, place was packed. Check in took 45min and the staff were rude and unhelpful. After a nightmare trek down the tiny, musty, stinking corridors that you have to walk down in single file before trying to barge yourway through the ridiclious fire doors, taking care not to trip over the carpet thats peeling away from the floor, reach your room to find dirty beds, rooms that havent been dusted in years and no towels in the grotty bathroom. Wallpaper peeling off the walls, clumps of plaster on the floor, skirting boards coming away from walls, damp everywhere and black mould and mildew in the bathroom. The T.V didnt work, and after 2 hours of waiting for someone to come and fix it we gave up and went to the bar. Top tip, DONT sit on any of the furniture! its filthy dirty, so bad that you actually stick to the sofas when you try and get up. All our clothes ended up marked.We didnt stay more than 10mins as we lost sight of each other through the thick fog of cigarette smoke. Didnt eat there as was terrified of what state kitchens must be in, couldnt imagine hygine being a priority. I have stayed in some basic places before and as long as they are clean thats all that matters, I wouldnt let a stray dog sleep in this flea pit. If you have booked it CHANGE IT!

We satyed at the Gatwick Europa before our holiday in dec to the maldives only to find at 2 am in the morning someone entering our room. the duty manager had given a drunk girl a key to get in without even checking it was her room.on complaining to that manager he laughed and offered us a drink as you can guess we were not amused! we also paid for late checkout we we didn't have in the end as the management obviously don't talk to there domestic staff as we were constantly interrupted and even had a phone call to vacate our room.on complaining to the manager in the morning he said head office would be informed and write to us they did not. we wrote to them but only got a reply form hotel manager as its Britannia hotels policy for the hotel to deal with complaints so why tell us to contact head office!!! we our still in negotiatons with Mr Vallally manager( 5 months down the line) who is not very helpful to say the least. to top it off we were caught up in the tsunami on boxing day and my elderly worried parents rang the hotel to assertain we had stayed there only to be told we had never stayed there as you can guess this only added to their worries. if i were you i would stay well clear of this hotel.

This is the worst "hotel" I ever slept in.. The filth in the rooms!! The idea to touch the blankets was horrifying, they are so hard,smelly and dirty. I dont have words for the bathroom floors and doors.The heating puffed with a constant rattle directly at me. At 1.30am I packed my things and asked for another room.The woman behind the counter was totally amazed about my complaints and offered me another room,"A much more expensive one"....I wished I had remained in the first one. Now I had the same lousy standard with the dog blankets, the same filth in the bathroom, the stench of smoke and mold, and a rickety bunk bed was crammed into a corner, the springs in the bed were showing, and the bedside lights did not work.I hardly had any sleep, so it did not matter that the wakeup call came 15 minutes late. I had to be inventive to turn on the shower as the tap for the cold water was faulty.I did not even dare to look at the breakfast which was included in the 123 US$.I literally fled the place earlyer than necessary and had a good breakfast at the airport,where I should have spent the night. Folded together there on a bench would have been cheaper and cleaner.

..Punter orders sandwiches and chips at bar....
Punter waits...and waits....and waits.....
Punter: Excuse me - I ordered food two hours ago. Where is it?
Barman: The kitchen closed ninety minutes ago.
Punter: !!!!!

Cleaner (Knock Knock): Hello! I've come to clean you room!
Punter: But it's 6am!
Cleaner: I'll come back.
Punter: !!!!!

Finally at checkout:
Checkout lady: Please check your bill before signing...
Punter: Hold on - There are sandwiches and chips here which I never received. Take them off the bill.
Checkout lady: But we have a receipt which shows you signed for sandwiches an chips. You must have received them.
Punter: Get me the manager...
After 5 mins manager arrives
Manager: Why did you sign for the food if you didn't want to pay for it?
Punter: !!!!!
After 30mins arguing Punter leaves the premises after sorting out problem.

(All Expletives - of which there were many - were removed from the above play.)

Curtain falls. Crowd cheer. Next week. Director takes a bow at front of stage.

Please read the reviews and still stay here. It is beyond a joke. If you wanted to take a family of four to see a farce in the Theatre it will cost $100+ Why not stay here for the same price and live the dream?

Went to a friends wedding near the area. And this hotel was near. So thought it would be ok. looks good from the outside but how wrong it is terrible place. Dirty rooms. We had a camp bed!!! Er, just dont want to write any more it was awful.

Holiday Parking - Beware

We drove a long way only to be told that the car park was full. The hotel did however offer alternative parking at a long term car park at Gatwick, which in fact worked out fine, as we didn't need to go back to the hotel when we landed. The hotel needs a refit, but I guess you get what you pay for. The price was very competitive. It served it's purpose, and made for a stress free start to the holiday !!

I am not going to go into the gory details, but this hotel is a disgrace to the industry!!!!!!

We stayed one night with 14 days parking before our dream holiday. This hotel DID NOT get us in the mood for our trip.

However, it is convenient for LGW and reasonably priced. But trust me 1 night is more than enough!!!! I am sure there are better Gatwick hotels within the same price range.

We are writing a full letter highlighting all the dissapointments to the Management.

But - here's a story for you - I happened to catch a 'Holidays from Hell' programme last night and guess which Hotel featured? One of the sister hotels of the Europa in Blackpool!!!!!!!!!!! Seems that the disgraceful standards are company wide and not just unique! SO STAY AWAY FROM ANY BRITANNIA HOTELS FULL STOP that's my advice.

PS: The hotel in the Caribbean when we got there was FANTASTIC (Bahia Principe, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic), just a shame our first night of our holiday was spent at the Europa!

Negotiating the motorways Always take the motorways when attempting to drive distances in England. Americans unfamiliar with English roundabouts and road signs should never try to drive after dark! Any journey will take less time if you travel on the motorways, even if it looks as if you are going miles out of the way. All A roads and B roads are much narrower than American roads, drivers are more aggressive and speed, and the roundabouts can be confusing.

taxi / courtessy bus The hotel info i was sent said the courtesy bus stopped running at 7, which is ridiculous since the only reason you're likely to be here is that you have arrived very late and have an early flight out of gatwick, however the hotel brochure said the service was 24 hours. I don't know which is correct but i may have wasted an extortionate 16.50 on an pointless cab ride. hey ho, you know you'd end up waiting 30 mins for the coach anyway so to be honest the money was worth it to know you were en route asap. The other thing is to allow good time to get to the airport again the next day . Although the hotel is only 10-15 mins or so from the airport, and runs every 15 mins or so, once you've boarded the coach, waited for stragglers, then followed the route to the South terminal first, then picked up the incoming load from the south terminal then headed to the north terminal, the entire trip can take easily upward of 30 mins and that's without any airport traffic to negotia
