A trail of failures....

from ~~~
A basic question: if you paid £150 per night for a room, would you expect it to have hot water?

No need to answer that I guess, and yet that is just one of a catalogue of failures that this hotel managed....

I stayed at Alexander house for my brother's wedding in Sept 2006, and was very impressed when I arrived. Friendly, courteous staff, a welcoming country house feel etc, but then it all started to go horribly wrong...

We all stayed 2 nights and on both nights my brother and the best man's rooms had no hot water. I mean seriously, in a hotel of this calibre that shows an impressive effort to fail.

On the morning after the first night I came up to my room after breakfast to find my fiance squatting in the bath rinsing the soap off herself using a glass and the water from the bath tap after the shower had simply stoppped working halfway through. The next morning the shower didn't work at all and I had to go to the spa in the basement to have my morning shower!

Myself and another guest both had rooms that faced the central courtyard, and were both woken at around 5am to the sound of the air conditioning system starting up (imagine a jet turbine strapped to the wall one floor below your window), and although it was not so loud as to keep me awake, the other guest had the duct right outside his window and neither he nor his girlfriend got any more sleep.

You may wish to make yourself a cup of tea about now, as there's plenty more to come....

At the reception (for about 80 people) the vegetarian option was not at all what my brother and his bride had ordered (despite being told the next day that it was...), something I know to be true since they are both people who have a high appreciation for good food and certainly would not have ordered what arrived on the night. It was a particularly bad mistake for the hotel to make as the bride, her sister and her future sister in law (my fiance) are all vegetarians!

For most of the evening water dripped from the ceiling of the reception room; first onto one of the tables, and then onto the dance floor right next to all the electrical equipment for the DJ!

But the "piece de resistance", the very "creme de la creme" of failures was when I saw my broither and his new bride at breakfast the morning after and they informed me that there was no hot water....
....in the BRIDAL SUITE!!! At around £250-300 this is just beyond comprehension!

So what was the overall impression?

Well, we had a FANTASTIC wedding, and the service was good, and the statff were friendly and polite, and the management listened to our complaints with good grace and discounted our rooms accordingly, so I can't fault them there.

We all felt that the problem was not that the hotel itself wasn't good (apart from the above problems), or that the staff were at fault - they were all that one would expect at the price tag - but rather that the management just didn't really know how to run a hotel of this calibre. Basic checks that showers work, hot water is free flowing and chefs are fully briefed are part and parcel of running a top notch hotel, and they fell down badly on that score.

It IS a nice hotel (although the rooms are pretty small for the price tag), and I write this not to complain or moan, but to give you, the reader, fair warning, especially if you are planning a wedding there.

I had a great time over the weekend I spent there, but with the good company and the enjoyment of seeing my brother and his fiance getting married, the hotel would have to have worked pretty hard to wipe the smile off my face....

Beware of noisy a/c units outside bedroom windows.

Stayed here on a stopover from gatwick airport after staying in 5 star properties in Italy. This hotel did not match up to the billing. Staff are excellent and were a credit to the owners. Restaurant was very good value even with its high prices. Lovely grounds and a very nice country pub down the road (about 15 mins walk). Unfortunately we had our stay during a very hot spell and with no A/C in the rooms we did not get any sleep. Complained after our stay and hotel reply was indifferent. Will choose elsewhere next time. Shame that the management let down the sterling efforts of the staff.

First class luxury

from acktrav
Our 2nd stay at this hotel proved just as pleasureable as the last. We stayed in room "Hapsley" this time and it was all that we expected. Luxury room, great bathroom. Only problem was the large modern air vent located right outside the bedroom window spoiling the ambience. On both nights of our stay we had to ring reception at gone 10pm to turn it off so that we could sleep.
The now completed Utopia Spa is fantastic and when we were there virtually for personal use,
The other gripe we had was that we were booked on an inclusive meal break which included a table de hote evening meal in the bistro. What you actually get is a £30 allowance each towards your meal. With the quite expensive priced menu you dont get a lot for the money and the meals just dont quite match up to the expectation set by the hotel itself. Drinks at £4 a pint and £7 a glass of house wine, suit yourself I suppose. When we visit again we will make full use of the Crown Pub in the nearby village, only a 10 to 15 minute stroll but offering good wine and food at standard prices. Only problem there is the smoky atmosphere in the lounge bar (worst I have ever encountered)

Loved Alexander House

from AnnieRich
Stayed at Alexander House for one night on business in June 2006. It is everything you could wish for and more. From being greeted in the drive upon arrival to the constant use of my name the service was impeccable. This is one of the few hotels that I have stayed in for business that I would definitely return to for pleasure. The next time I go on holiday from Gatwick I will make a point of staying here and maybe even turn up a day early to really enjoy the spa facilities, which I was not able to do on my business trip. It is quite pricey but you do get what you pay for in life and this is definitely worth it. Most hotels in the Crawley/Gatwick area are truly awful and very overpriced - this is the only one for me from now on!!!

Keep me coming back year after year

I had my wedding in Alexander House Hotel in February 2005, I had exclusive use of the hotel and can speak for every one of my guests when i say it is Brilliant. The staff bent over backwards for me, to make sure it was the day of my dreams, and i got it!

Having a wedding in February you can not guarantee the weather, so when we started looking for places to hold our perfect day, when we saw Alexander House our search stopped there. The outside is as grand as the inside and this is reflected in every aspect of the hotel.

The staff are amazing, and actually seem to enjoy working there, I know i would be.
The wedding day went without a hitch, ( excuse the pun ). It was the most perfect day i could wish for and Alexander House staff played a large part in that.

We returned to Alexander House in Feb 2006, to celebrate our 1st Wedding anniversary, and dispite the spa being completed, not alot had changed. We happened to be the only people in the hotel on that night, and they had brought the receptionist, chef and bar manager in especially to look after us, as they knew it was special occasion for us!

Once again everything was perfect, we enjoyed a delicious romantic dinner, literally just the two of us, and could sit and reflect on our day that we had had a year ago.
We enjoyed our Coffee in the library, with the roaring log fire.

I would highly recommend Alexander House to absolutely everybody, and i shall return on the 5th February for years to come.

Amazing Alexander!

My cousin and I booked into the Alexander House Hotel & Utopia Spa for a relaxing and luxurious pamper break. The spa had only been open for a week when we went and there was still some building work being carried out at the front of the property carpark so although we were scheduled to stay in the new rooms above the spa we were moved to rooms in the original part of the hotel. When we were presented with the rooms we were both absolutely thrilled. Not only had we been given separate rooms eventhough we had booked to share, but we were also upgraded for the inconvenience. Both rooms were fabulous. One with a free standing rolltop bath and double shower as a main feature and the other with a huge suite including the most beautiful four poster bed. The service, cleanliness and comfort was absolutely fantastic and the food - well the restaurant has two rossettes and certainly deserves them. Staff were friendly and enthusistic and the beauty therapists were pleasant and professional. Will definitely be going back. In agreement with the previous reviewers comments who's only concern was that it might lose it's charm and high service quality if it's expansion is not well managed. I am sure this hotel will be constantly fully booked so be sure to book in advance.

Excellent.

Lovely hotel. My only disappointment was that I arrived very late, the night we stayed before flying out of the South Terminal, owing to atrocious traffic. Thus I saw very little of the beautiful grounds and public rooms. It was a special birthday for my mother, and I e-mailed the hotel to let them know. They up-graded 3 of us to wonderful rooms, a really lovely touch. The staff were fantastic, typing out some urgent business letters for my mother, they then had to be forced to take some token money for the service. The wonderful Norman and his limousine service cannot be praised enough. He is wonderful, courteous, beautifully turned out, and unfailingly prompt and polite, despite the vagaries of time keeping of our return flight. Give me an immaculately kept mercedes over a minibus any time. I shall deliberately book future flights from Gatwick, in order to stay at this wonderful place. I look forward to arriving in good time, with plenty of remaining daylight, on my next visit. At the risk of letting the masses into the secret of this wonderful hotel, I must nonetheless give it an unreserved recommendation.

A great find

from McH56
We were unfortunately only here for a night before flying off to Grenada from Gatwick. After staying at many of the typical airport hotels what a find this place was and it was thanks to earlier reviews that we booked it. Great service, bedroom and dinner in the evening, what a wonderful relaxing start to a holiday. We'll definately use it again.
Our one concern was that the hotel appears to be expanding and I just hope it doesn't take on too much and become impersonal and loose it's great charm, time will tell.

What A Find!!

from Jilbo
I'm not sure whether I should be writing a review or keeping this little gem a secret! What a find.... approx 8 miles from Gatwick. The hotel is listed in the Small Luxury Hotels Of The World and those words fit this place perfectly.
From arrival to departure nothing was too much trouble. We had booked a double room for 1 night but were upgraded to a junior suite - nice touch! The bedroom was very comfortable and the en-suite had 2 wash basins, a separate shower plus large bath. Beautiful, fluffy white towels were in large supply on the heated towel rail. The hotels exclusive toiletries are also in ample supply. I must remember to try the new Spa on our next visit. Maybe a facial before flying off!!!

The hotel offers a small bistro and a main restaurant. Both are beautifully decorated and the food excellent.

The following morning, and as part of the package, we were met at the front door by our airport chauffeur, Norman, who loaded the cases into a huge Mercedes and whisked us off to Gatwick for our flight to Barbados. Our car remained in the safe hands of the hotel for the duration of our holiday.
On our return Norman was waiting for us outside the arrivals hall - absolute bliss, straight into a warm car and driven off back to the hotel to find our car waiting for us in front of reception.
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough - it ought to be awarded a "best airport hotel" or something like that!

Top Local Tips for Crawley

Getting to the airport Use Norman's chauffer service for a proper sense of luxury and to arrive at the airport refreshed and ready to travel.

Room allocation Check which room you're likely to be allocated if you have a preference. Rooms in the main house are quite traditional in style (one we had on our first visit was small but had a stunning bathroom with claw footed bath), the more contemporary rooms are in the spa extention.

Close to Gatwick but no air traffic noise The hotel is 15 minutes from Gatwick by cab; £18.50. Very convenient to many area gardens.
