A trail of failures....from ~~~
No need to answer that I guess, and yet that is just one of a catalogue of failures that this hotel managed....
I stayed at Alexander house for my brother's wedding in Sept 2006, and was very impressed when I arrived. Friendly, courteous staff, a welcoming country house feel etc, but then it all started to go horribly wrong...
We all stayed 2 nights and on both nights my brother and the best man's rooms had no hot water. I mean seriously, in a hotel of this calibre that shows an impressive effort to fail.
On the morning after the first night I came up to my room after breakfast to find my fiance squatting in the bath rinsing the soap off herself using a glass and the water from the bath tap after the shower had simply stoppped working halfway through. The next morning the shower didn't work at all and I had to go to the spa in the basement to have my morning shower!
Myself and another guest both had rooms that faced the central courtyard, and were both woken at around 5am to the sound of the air conditioning system starting up (imagine a jet turbine strapped to the wall one floor below your window), and although it was not so loud as to keep me awake, the other guest had the duct right outside his window and neither he nor his girlfriend got any more sleep.
You may wish to make yourself a cup of tea about now, as there's plenty more to come....
At the reception (for about 80 people) the vegetarian option was not at all what my brother and his bride had ordered (despite being told the next day that it was...), something I know to be true since they are both people who have a high appreciation for good food and certainly would not have ordered what arrived on the night. It was a particularly bad mistake for the hotel to make as the bride, her sister and her future sister in law (my fiance) are all vegetarians!
For most of the evening water dripped from the ceiling of the reception room; first onto one of the tables, and then onto the dance floor right next to all the electrical equipment for the DJ!
But the "piece de resistance", the very "creme de la creme" of failures was when I saw my broither and his new bride at breakfast the morning after and they informed me that there was no hot water....
....in the BRIDAL SUITE!!! At around £250-300 this is just beyond comprehension!
So what was the overall impression?
Well, we had a FANTASTIC wedding, and the service was good, and the statff were friendly and polite, and the management listened to our complaints with good grace and discounted our rooms accordingly, so I can't fault them there.
We all felt that the problem was not that the hotel itself wasn't good (apart from the above problems), or that the staff were at fault - they were all that one would expect at the price tag - but rather that the management just didn't really know how to run a hotel of this calibre. Basic checks that showers work, hot water is free flowing and chefs are fully briefed are part and parcel of running a top notch hotel, and they fell down badly on that score.
It IS a nice hotel (although the rooms are pretty small for the price tag), and I write this not to complain or moan, but to give you, the reader, fair warning, especially if you are planning a wedding there.
I had a great time over the weekend I spent there, but with the good company and the enjoyment of seeing my brother and his fiance getting married, the hotel would have to have worked pretty hard to wipe the smile off my face....
Beware of noisy a/c units outside bedroom windows.from skyfly04
First class luxuryfrom acktrav
The now completed Utopia Spa is fantastic and when we were there virtually for personal use,
The other gripe we had was that we were booked on an inclusive meal break which included a table de hote evening meal in the bistro. What you actually get is a £30 allowance each towards your meal. With the quite expensive priced menu you dont get a lot for the money and the meals just dont quite match up to the expectation set by the hotel itself. Drinks at £4 a pint and £7 a glass of house wine, suit yourself I suppose. When we visit again we will make full use of the Crown Pub in the nearby village, only a 10 to 15 minute stroll but offering good wine and food at standard prices. Only problem there is the smoky atmosphere in the lounge bar (worst I have ever encountered)

Having a wedding in February you can not guarantee the weather, so when we started looking for places to hold our perfect day, when we saw Alexander House our search stopped there. The outside is as grand as the inside and this is reflected in every aspect of the hotel.
The staff are amazing, and actually seem to enjoy working there, I know i would be.
The wedding day went without a hitch, ( excuse the pun ). It was the most perfect day i could wish for and Alexander House staff played a large part in that.
We returned to Alexander House in Feb 2006, to celebrate our 1st Wedding anniversary, and dispite the spa being completed, not alot had changed. We happened to be the only people in the hotel on that night, and they had brought the receptionist, chef and bar manager in especially to look after us, as they knew it was special occasion for us!
Once again everything was perfect, we enjoyed a delicious romantic dinner, literally just the two of us, and could sit and reflect on our day that we had had a year ago.
We enjoyed our Coffee in the library, with the roaring log fire.
I would highly recommend Alexander House to absolutely everybody, and i shall return on the 5th February for years to come.

A great findfrom McH56
Our one concern was that the hotel appears to be expanding and I just hope it doesn't take on too much and become impersonal and loose it's great charm, time will tell.
What A Find!!from Jilbo
From arrival to departure nothing was too much trouble. We had booked a double room for 1 night but were upgraded to a junior suite - nice touch! The bedroom was very comfortable and the en-suite had 2 wash basins, a separate shower plus large bath. Beautiful, fluffy white towels were in large supply on the heated towel rail. The hotels exclusive toiletries are also in ample supply. I must remember to try the new Spa on our next visit. Maybe a facial before flying off!!!
The hotel offers a small bistro and a main restaurant. Both are beautifully decorated and the food excellent.
The following morning, and as part of the package, we were met at the front door by our airport chauffeur, Norman, who loaded the cases into a huge Mercedes and whisked us off to Gatwick for our flight to Barbados. Our car remained in the safe hands of the hotel for the duration of our holiday.
On our return Norman was waiting for us outside the arrivals hall - absolute bliss, straight into a warm car and driven off back to the hotel to find our car waiting for us in front of reception.
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough - it ought to be awarded a "best airport hotel" or something like that!
Top Local Tips for Crawley
Getting to the airport Use Norman's chauffer service for a proper sense of luxury and to arrive at the airport refreshed and ready to travel.
Room allocation Check which room you're likely to be allocated if you have a preference. Rooms in the main house are quite traditional in style (one we had on our first visit was small but had a stunning bathroom with claw footed bath), the more contemporary rooms are in the spa extention.
Close to Gatwick but no air traffic noise The hotel is 15 minutes from Gatwick by cab; £18.50. Very convenient to many area gardens.
