Reviews - Merrick Lodge Hotel

This hotel does not deserve the bad rap it has had to date...

I stayed one night here whilst attending a get together with friends nearby. I found the hotel excellent, particularly given the low price. The staff were friendly; the room was absolutely fine - the decor is a bit old fashioned but fresh and everything was spotlessly clean! The bathroom was again spotless and the shower didn't look like much but it was really very good.
I had breakfast in the morning; a small selection of cereals, a selection of juices and a do it yourself toast machine with choice of white and brown bread; choice of tea or cofee; followed by a full English (if you wanted). I did opt for the full english but there was a party of 8 men sitting at a table next to me who each had all sorts of different things, including boiled eggs. The staff seemed only too willing to accommodate their requests.
All in all I thought the Merrick Lodge was excellent value for money. If, like me, you look at a hotel simply as place to get your head down at night, the this hotel is perfectly acceptable for a night or two. I would recommend it to friends and I will most likely use it again whilst visting Coventry.

I stayed for one night in January in a twin room. The staff was very friendly and helpful but the place stank a bit and carpet was dirty. Bathroom was not very well cleaned and there was a big spider at the corner of the bathroom, right above me when I was taking a shower. Telephone was not working. Hair dryer was way too weak and cold.

The room was very warm in a snowy night which was very good to me. Power shower with plenty of hot water but the shampoo and shower gel provided smell like washing up liquid.
The worst food and service I have ever experienced

I only visited the restaurant and so I can only comment on the food and service. I felt it necessary to leave a review because not only was the food the worst that I have ever tasted but the service was awful and I consider service to be a priority when choosing somewhere to stay.

I leave many reviews on trip advisor and I can honestly say that I have never given a hotel such a poor rating as I have given this one. That is because although many places have their faults, they make up for them in some way. The Merrick Lodge was a huge disappointment and I want to warn anyone considering staying here to STAY AWAY.

The service was fast (i.e. plates were thrown at us), the vegetables were soggy and left an after taste which lasted for hours, veggetarians are ignored, the food descriptions were incorrect (e.g. baileys cream- yummy! turned out to be coffee cream- not so delicious, but 'they're the same colour!' (quote from the waitress)), the skin from the milk was poured into the coffee and the soup was like water.

I complained to the manager by letter a few days later as I didn't want to feel more miserable than I already was that night by getting upset with how the whole evening had turned out. However, according to the manager, this was too late and he could offer no remedy. His reply to my letter contained lies and he didn't even offer an apology. Considering the manager has been doing this job for the past trillion years, I am surprised that the business is still going with this level of service especially as the prices this place is charging are way too high (the Toby serves up better food for a quarter of the price and you would do better to stay in a Travel Lodge!).
