Stayed at this hotel for one night at the end of November and wished we had followed our instincts and walked out. Our first room was filthy, plugs and sockets were coming away from the wall and the bed which had no mattress cover was heavily stained with what can only have been urine. The second room was cleaner but was smelly and neither of us could bring ourselves to use the bath or shower. The cracked washbasin was enough. The only thing that could be said about the breakfast was that it was plentiful.

Worst hotel I have ever stayed at including my poor student travel days

from CdnTravelGirl
If there was an option to give this hotel NO stars I would. It was easily the worst hotel I have ever stayed at, value for money. Travelling on a corporate rate I paid over £100 for this dump and it was seedy, unsafe and unclean. Located across from a Gala Bingo and a bus terminal, it looks like a Russian dorm building and is scary to walk to from the parking lot, around the corner and under the motorway. My room was truly terrible, with stained bed covers, sagging mattresses and a shower with a huge ring of rust (at least I hope it was rust). I debated sleeping fully clothed on top of the covers but wasn't sure what was worse - the sheets or the cover. And the only lock on the door to my room was a flimsy bathroom style push button lock. The next morning they had the nerve to charge another £9 for a gross breakfast.

My colleagues and I all agreed that this was the worst hotel any of us had ever stayed in. When you pay almost nothing for a hotel, you expect it to be run down and dirty, but when you pay over £100 in COVENTRY of all places, this place is an outrage.
I have even officially complained to the hotel.

worst hotel I have ever stayed in

Hotel is tatty, worn out and dirty.
Staff were average, the bar area disgusting, room was dirty sink broken with very old fibreglass hardware which was delaminating. Tiles in the bathroom were in very poor condition and the whole bathroom was a health hazard.
I did not eat there as if the kitchen was anything like the rest of the hotel food poisoning would be a definate.
Do not stay here.

s Worst

the place reeks of stale cigarette smoke; staff are "pod people", like out of the science-fiction film of the 1950's "Invaders from Mars".

desserts tasteless in dining room; my room had warped, torn linoleum on bathroom floor; neither hot nor cold faucet worked on tub; spout was broken off, leaving a jagged piece.

don't stay here

Royal Britannia Coventry avoid at all costs

Receptionist did not even acknowledge I was waiting to check in. Door to room open wide on arrival but in pitch darkness. As a woman travelling alone I was quite worried. Large damp stain on carpet, ciggy burns in bathroom sink but yet a non smoking room...
Limited blankets and heating off after midnight on a very cold night. Blankets smelt awful and unwashed. Glad to get out of there!

The Pits

Now I can go back to when this hotel was called the De Vere and it was one of the best hotels in Britain,in fact I remember by the lift it had all these awards for "Top Hotel" and 'Best Hotel", one being from American Express they won year after year, now Amex do not give their award for nothing. BUT now the hotel is owned by the Britannia Group and what a difference, really dirty rooms, yellow curtains with windows that do not close and if they do, they do not open. The restaurant was a disaster from service to food, although I found the staff very pleasant and always apologizing. The bar was run by a cocky teenager who had'nt a clue and as for management, they would be better off in a circus.
It is a shame because right down to the Head Porter(had cross keys on his lapel)who was decked out in a blue uniform and top hat to match we are offered this crap, please read this and act accordingly, book elswhere there are some nice hotels in Coventry and this City has so much to offer

We decided to take a mystery trip on offer for xmas and ended up at the Britannia hotel in Coventry.
It was awful. The food was under cooked, the organisation was hopeless. I felt so sorry for the staff who were pleasant and tried hard. I think everyone thought the same so they never hastled the staff that I could see. The food was under cooked and xmas day evening buffet was well short for clients. The organisation was hopeless. Next year I think we shall stay at home.

Pleasantly surprised

from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked this hotel before reading the Trip Advisor reviews. After reading the reviews, we wanted to cancel and tried to book elsewhere but, due to trade shows in Birmingham, we found hotels within easy reach of the NEC were fully booked. We took our chances and hoped for the best.

We were very pleasantly surprised. The room was very clean and welcoming and appeared to be newly decorated. It had the facilities of hairdryer, tea/coffee tray, trouser press, TV and telephone. Bathroom/toilet were clean.

We did not use the dining/breakfast facilities so can't comment. Staff very polite and helpful.

Altogether, a good deal.

Most disgusting hotel the the UK

This is the most repulsive hotel i have ever been to in my life. Had to change rooms 4 times due to poor cleanliness. Tampon wrappers on the floor of toilets, genital hair etc. The staff were rude. The manager was aggresive. I decided to check out the hotel due to the poor cleanliness. The assistant manager confirmed he would not charge me however have now found out that he has.

I have contacted Trading standards about this hotel. It is not a 3* hote. I have stayed in nicer 1* hotels

Do not stay here even if your life depends on it.

Find somewhere else to stay

from capitalcountdowners
Just come back from a weekend break at this hotel and I have to say the best thing about it is the location, within easy walking distance of 5 shopping areas. It felt dirty and there were no staff to check us in initially. Don't order coffee from the bar, you will get a cup of dishwater and I do mean cup, no saucer, pot etc. I did take it back and ask for a replacement which was then very nicely served (cup, saucer, milk etc.) and had a selection of biscuits too but really you should be able to expect that in a 3 star hotel. After that experience we decided not to eat in the hotel.

If you do decide to stay here (why?) then you get a good deal on parking, you exchange your car park token at reception for a minimal charge.

Shopping in Coventry is excellent and the reason we were there. People in the town were very friendly and there was a great exhibition on in the old Cathedral.

We ate at Flames, near the precinct, very clean, lovely staff, reasonable prices although quite a limited menu. Evening meal was at Dogma, it's a pub/club type venue, once again quite a limited menu but excellent food, nicely served, good prices and friendly staff.

We had a great time in Coventry and it's definitely worth a visit but find somewhere else to stay. Please note, this is not a criticism of Britannia hotels in general as I stayed at the Britannia's Docklands hotel and couldn't fault it.

One Of The Worst Hotels In UK

Like a council estate block from the outside , the inside faired little better . My room on the 7th floor with balcony ( I think this is one of the better rooms ) , was very basic , bedspreads were ripped , curtians torn and net curtains grubby. The towels would have been burnt by most places .The lobby bar smelt of the fried food from the restuarant and it took 3 attempts to find a clean glass for my pint. The pint when it arrived tasted of disinfectant and had to be returned. The whole place was very run down and the staff attitude told me that they were obviously fed up working in such a run down establishment. STAY AWAY

Top Local Tips for Coventry

Wall to wall shops The shopping in Coventry is really good .The Cathedral was spectacular.

busses you need to have correct change before you get on the bus. they don't give any change. It costs £1.30

Good chinese We went to the My Chinese restaurant, just around the corner from our hotel. It was contemporary, had a nice menu. service was good and the cost was reasonable.
