We had a great holiday, we took took our two children both under 3.
We went at the end of mid season and paid £600 for 4 nights Bed, break and dinner with 2 nights free Bed and break. (And at that price and a bit more, this place is a real undisputed bargain)

My review is based on this price as its posible to pay 3 times that amount at this hotel and that would of course alter expectations around some of the hotels detail.

My first impression driving into the bay to see the hotel was not great - a victorian building with an ugly seventies extension on the front...... but from there things improved, I was pleasantly suprised at the reception which was larger than I had expected (and given some other negative reviews was actually higher quality than I had imagined) the feeling of space was excentuated by the bar and patio leading off this area with views from big bay windows onto the sea below. A terrific view

We were in the coach house which was just about ok, big enough with just a slight musty whif and a small bathroom - it was ok but not any more. The rooms are getting done up and the prices will no doubt follow as this is the discount end of things at the moment

The staff on reception were very good and I think previous reviews have been taken on board, attentive and efficient. The bar is priced at expensive-ish hotel prices the sort of places that give you Japanese rice crackers and the staff wear dicky bows- only here the waiters wear T shirts and the service is at best pub standard and at times amateurish. I asked what wines were available by the glass and was told country of origin only and then was met with a blank look as to why I would need more info - at £6.50 for a large glass I want to choose!! its not that the bar staff are rude indeed they are extremely pleasent, they appear just not trained and to be fair a new bar manager is starting in July and the hotel probably recognises it needs to up it in this area. Its the balnce of relaxed holiday service and a more formal approach, I generally like things casual but maybe not this casual.

Food - excellent buffet breakfast, excellent kids 5pm meal and superb evening food, with excellent service. Its the evening meal here that totally blows you away it is easily worth the £27 per head charged to those on breakfast only, its a genuine challenge to No 15 which is by the way also excellent (twice the price though, we paid £80 for two courses at lunch with nice wine)

We will be back and would recommend to others

My family and i have just returned from watergate bay Hotel and what a fansatic time we all had. We have been going for a few years now but what a transformation. The hotel as been totally refurbed and as a modern and relaxed atmosphere. We stayed in a ocean view room and it was just the best. All the staff was very helpfull and the manager named Mark just couldnt do enough for you and was always freindly towards us and everyone else. The hotel is in the best position just ouside Newquy away from the hustle and bustle but still within easy access. We have two boys aged 5 and 8 and they had the best time ever, the kids was well suppervised with fully trained staff and there was always entertainment on for them, they loved it all from the owls to the magician. The kids tea searved at 5pm was absolutly fantastic no chickin nuggets and greasy chips here. There was a fanstic buffet style choice of fresh chickin, grilled salmon, fresh veg, potatoes, pasta, fresh fruit. I really was impressed and the kids loved it too. I think this is a great idea to give the kids a early tea so later on while the kids were being supervised my husband and i would have our meal in the hotels resturant this too was excelent. The food was fanstic they must have a great chef. It was like going out to a top resturant every night, not the usual slop alot of seaside hotels serve up. We went to the new Jamie Olivers "fifteen" resturant one night and it was absolutly georgeous, worth every penny. I just carnt belive this hotel it just gets better and better is in the best postion , the beach is fantastic, the hotel is fantastic the food is fantatic what more can i say. we have already booked again and carnt wait to go back again. I would like to say a big thankyou to all the staff and especially the Hotels Manager Mark for a fab time xxx.

I have just returned from 3 nights at the hotel. I went on my own and this was me treating myself. The first night all that was available was an economy room and it was horrible (the curtains needed repairing, the paintwork was dirty and the bathroom floor was stained). The next two nights I stayed in one of the new rooms - the first night a superior room and the second a standard room - both with sea views. These rooms were really lovely with a fantastic view from the boarded terrace. The communal areas in the hotel are beautiful if you like light and modern (and I do), and there are indoor and outdoor heated pools. The evening meals are generally absolutely delicious - I would particularly recommend the fish (the local lamb was a bit tough) and the decision about which gorgeous desert to have is painful! The breakfasts are also good but the service for coffee is not (and the waitresses can be sullen). Re the reservation - I made the mistake on the second day of asking about vacant rooms through reception - I should have asked for the reservations manager. The receptionist tried to charge me a ridiculous rate and was far from helpful.

My family and I stayed at the Watergate Bay Hotel at the beginning of June for three days. The accommodation we booked certainly did not resemble the hotel website. The room was the dirtiest hotel room and bathroom we have ever stayed in, the hotel was full for the week so we could not change rooms. We go on family holidays abroad at least three times a year, after a fantastic April holiday in California we decided to show our children the English coast as my son loves surfing. The beach at Watergate Bay is stunning and the Extreme Surfing Academy is very good value for money. The restaurant at the beach was excellent, far better than the much hyped and over priced "Fifteen" which Jamie Oliver has just opened. Our meal at "Fifteen" was a real disappointment no better than canteen food, my main course of beef was so dry and tasteless. Perhaps the staff at "Fifteen" need to take some cooking lessons from the chefs at the beach restaurant. This just confirms to me why we go abroad for our family holidays, better value for money and far better customer service.

I have read all the reviews before i arrived so i was nervous, but why should i have been.. This place is fab... The service is the best i have ever had in UK hotel particually one that looks after kids so well... We booked an economy room, and yes thats what we got, it could do with updating but we where not shocked, it still provided a great base, while the rest of the hotel was brilliant..!... The staff are first class the manager is always there to offer help and advise and just to say "good morning" which is something you do not get these days... seeing a manager who cared... The guys that look after the kids are just what you need, friendly relaxed and perfectly trained i felt very relaxed leaving my kids with them... The food in the dining room deserves a medal... in fact the chef should have been on that program to cook for the queen, i certainly would have voted for him.. We tried sports on the beach as a family and loved it, even in May the water was warm or was that the wet suit!... My kids become hooked on the extreme hot chocolate and while not cheep worth every penny... And then to Fifteen, yes we managed to get a table thanks to Mark! Well all i can say is book yourself a table now!.. its great!
WOulds i stay again YES we have already booked! and so should everyone else...

I would recommend Watergate Bay Hotel to anyone...the reason for this is that it caters for all types of people - families, corporate, groups of friends on a surfing weekend, couples on a romantic break etc. The new rooms should definately have four stars and the hotel as a whole is well beyond three in service and style. The food menus have been carefully thought out and are delicious also the staff are very friendly.
The other reason I would reccommend Watergate Bay Hotel to anyone is that you can take the whole experience at your own pace...go for a walk along the headland, sit and read a book looking out at the fantastic beach, try surfing or kite surfing - the opportunities of things to do or not do are endless. The Extreme Academy next door is all part of it, as is The Beach Hut which offers great lunches and dinners too - not forgetting the Extreme Hot Chocolate! Jamie Oliver has just opened his new 15 Cornwall restaurant there too so that's another foodie reason to head down there. If you want to get out of London at any time of the year and really forget about the trials and tribulations of city life then Watergate Bay is a highly recommended tonic.

My family and I have just returned from a weeks stay at "Watergate Bay". Upon arrival (after a very long journey) the first thing the receptionist asked was how we intended on paying the bill ! The accommodation that we had booked had no resembelance to the upmarket picture in the glossy brochure.

The food was good if somewhat overpriced. The childrens evening entertainment was cancelled. During our stay Jamie Oliver opened his "Fifteen" restaurant next door and stayed at the hotel, along with tv crews, reporters, journalists etc and of course a few celebs. The food suddenly inproved dramatically as did the quality of service all round.... I wonder why? Nothing to do with wanting a good review of the hotel was it????? . The quality of the sports equipment in the hotel itself was poor. You even had to pay for a cue tip as people were stealing them and the table tennis bats had hardly any rubber on them!!!!!!!!!

On a more positive note, the beach is excellent, the food in the beach hut is superb and service first class , the housekeeping for our room was faultless and the 2 young staff members that arranged daily activities for the children were friendly, helpful and trustworthy and great at their job. My family and I will not be returning. The brochure is not a true reflection of reality..... except for the picture of the beach!!!!

trying hard to be an upmarket place, but does not quite make it. all comments from previous remarks shouldbe taken onboard. the thing that done it for us was the prices, the building site right outside. we were not told about this when we booked. staff in the dining room need to shown what an iron is! also the people who were eating on the table opposit were asked to pay the bill before they had even been given thier pudding!. dirty dishes were left outside the room all night, not quite what you expect from a top hotel. we wont be going back even if it is a great beach.....

Hi,

My wife and I stayed at the Watergate Bay over Easter and had a wonderful time. The hotel was full however we found that the service was fine. All the staff were efficient and friendly and the food was great.

I almost cancelled the trip because of the reviews on Trip Advisor however I can honestly say that I was 110% pleasantly surprised. We had a wonderful time and will certainly be returning.

A big thank you to all at Watergate Bay for a wonderful break.

Stayed here with my b/f recently.

I had similar experiences as the previous review. I cant be bothered giving you specific examples, but i feel that everyone should know that this hotel fails to live up to the expectations its website, brochures and PR implies.

Dont believe the hype!

Watergate is at least a ten minute drive from newquay!

The rooms have not yet been refurbished, but we were really pleased with our room, it had been painted neutrel colours and was clean and fresh with a flat screen tv.The Hotel was amazing, very modern and funky. The Recpetion area has leather sofas to lounge around on and a open fire. The Bar/Living Area is really modern with cool chairs and leather and fabric sofas to sit on and watch the sea, playing cool ambient music in the backgound, at night tea lights and lamps were on to give a lovely romantic feel. We ate in the restaurant and the meal was fantastic, staff were very helpful the whole holiday. Breakfast was lovely, choice of cerals, fruit juices, fruit, yoghuts and hot food. We have had the most amazing time and will definitely be going back asap!

Fanastic Hotel My partner and I have just stayed at the Watergate Bay Hotel for the weekend. What a fantastic hotel, cool, modern and funky. The hotel is situated right on the beach, so has the most stunning views, you can sit in the Bar/Living area and watch the sea, very tranquil and relaxing as well as romantic in the evenings with low lighting and tea light candles, the hotel has floor to ceiling windows so you can always see the sea. We ate in the restaurant one evening and had a gorgeous meal, very well presented. Theres a indoor and outdoor pool, and as much to my partners delight there was snooker table! in a seperate room Breakfast was was a wide variety of cooked food, cerals, fruit, yoghuts and pasteries. Very friendly and helpful staff. Will definitely be going back asap! I cant understand the other negative reviews of this hotel, its fantastic!
