Historical Traveller Reviews of St Michael's Hotel

Appalling Value for money

from CORNISHGIRLCornwall
We booked one nights stay and the Gala New Years Dinner which cost £278 per couple. It was disgusting value for money. The room (number 34) was so small you could not walk around both sides of the bed comfortably. It was in the basement and certainly felt like it. The windows were skylights and the whole room felt claustrophobic. What should have been fun and enjoyable turned out to be an expensive waste of time. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I am a seasoned traveller and have never been so incensed about something that i have complained or even written a review. I did write a comments sheet to the hotel but that has not even been acknowledged. I think if someone is being booked into this room they should be told how small it is so they can make their own informed decision as to whether they want to stay there. The food was very nice although the soup was cold, the first course arrived with the second. However the restaurant staff responded very well and brought out extra food. All in all i would definately think twice before booking this again if i was a traveller.

happily satisfied!!

my partner and i booked this hotel as it was advertising a 'to-good-to-miss' offer in the local paper which included, dinner, bed and breakfast, with a massage for two...all included!! As the stay was for an anniversary it tied in quite nicely.

From the moment we got there until the minute we left, we were so impressed, and left wishing we could have stayed longer.

The spa treatment were an absolute delight- and the service was brilliant, fautless.

Our room (garden view) was spacious, CLEAN and very comfortable.

The dinner was most special and were treated very well. The food and wine was just stunning,.

All in all no disappointments, and felt spoiled and relaxed on departure.

Have recommended it to as many as possible and will continue to do so.

Cant wait to return!!!!!

Great location!!

We stayed here for a wedding for four nights in July.

We were told before hand to ensure we had sea view rooms as these were the better rooms. Luckily we did and had a decked area outside so we could enjoy the view.

The room was comfortably furnished with all the amenties that you need and expect of a hotle of this star. The decor kept the beach feel to it which was wonderful especially as you are moments from the beach.

The spa is a real plus. The therapists there were very professional and I had some excellent treatments. Best book in advance if you are not flexible.

It is one of the more modern hotels in Falmouth and I would go back again.

3 Star Hotel, 1 Star Service!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have just returned from spending 3 days at this hotel, and i can honestly say that this is the worst 3 star hotel we have ever stayed at!. Please save your money, there is a lovely hotel next door to this one.
I will start with our family suite(ha!, stayed in better B&Bs). Walls paper thin - could here conversations from the next room. Tea/coffee table - no socket anywhere near - we had to walk the kettle across the room and sit it on the floor (great when you have two children walking around!). Bedside lamps the same - plugs hanging loosely down the side - as no socket to plug them in. Horrible view from bedroom - looked over a filthy roof. Outside our main bedroom window was a metal staircase - so had people walking past our window (not what you would expect from the 2nd floor!).which we were reluctuant to open incase anyone was to climb through. Tiny dated portable tv in corner, with no teletext or sky. At £186 per room (excluding dinner) we expected alot more from this hotel.
Moving on to the restaurant. Service was terrible - we ordered two salads and two sandwiches lunchtime - took 35 mintues to arrive - although there was only one other table occupied in there. Ordered dessert - took the waiter another 30 minutes to come and tell us that two of the puddings ordered wasnt available so we had to re-order. My husband didnt receive part of his order, but rather than correct it - they just took the item off our bill, so my husband went without!!!!!. Given a spoon with the cheeseboard. Dirty cups with breakfast, tea and coffee were awful - just flavoured water. If iit wasnt for the spa facilities, i would find it hard to justify awarding it more than one star. Needless to say, we wont be returning.

Okay,but room for improvement

Stayed 2 nights. Our family room was in the lodge and the entrance to the lodge is very tired looking. Our room was also tired looking, although a decent size.Breakfast was average and served until 9.30am,just make sure your there before 9am as the food runs out.The staff are friendley and helpful and do work very hard.My wife requested spa treatments, but these were not available as the staff were on training,we should have been notified of this,as it is a spa hotel.I got a very good rate rate for the room,so all in all ok,but had I paid the rack rate I would have been mortified.

Great Hotel, Great Service, Great Staff!

I stayed at the St Michael's Hotel for 3 days and everything was perfect. Bob, on reception was fantastic and extremely helpful, as was his colleague, a lady from Norway. Lauren in the bar was brilliant, knowing exactly what wine I liked and remembering!! I cannot understand the other comments made about this hotel. The rooms were especially clean. The shower was brilliant! Very powerful. The breakfast was plentiful and such a variety of foods and juices! The waiting staff were so friendly and helpful. They even had GreenTea! Dinner was a choice of four dishes for each course (if your dinner was included in the price). Every nght the food was consistently excellent. And the bar prices were not over priced! I only experienced efficiency, courtesy and lovely people. I would recommend this hotel to any would be traveller to Cornwall. Enjoy, relax and explore!!

Lovely hotel, terrible service!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel looked beautiful and the reception staff were very helpful and pleasant. Our room looked lovely but we were kept awake for most of the night with staff banging the bins and emptying bottles outside our room!

The standard of food in both restaurants was disappointing with the service very poor. Our starter arrived at the same time as the main course, my steak was returned to the kitchen twice, breakfast ran out and the restaurant manager tutted when I told her their wasn't much left. The restaurant and bar services were more Fawlty Towers than Rosette standard!

The reception staff were clearly used to handling complaints as they handled everything very well and efficiently.

Better than the weather.

The test of a decent hotel is to turn up for breakfast 15 minutes before it's due to finish. If all you find is dried out remains then you have a problem. Happy to say in this case everything on offer was still fresh, nice and in abundant quantities. Supper seemed to be of similar quality. The tables in the Flying Fish Grill have a funny sticky feel, but you can get the same food there as in the posh restaurant if all you're feeling like is a single course. A request for a fresh fruit salad got a response that there wan't any (to be fair it wasn't listed on the menu), but at breakfast the following day there was all the fruit salad you could want...Odd.. maybe the fruit man delivers early. Have to say that we thought we'd eat elsewhere once or twice before we arrived, but never actually did, this reflects the pricing and quality on offer.
Our room was fine. The sea view was O.K, but we echo the comment about the grotty rooftop that's in the way. We definately liked the spa, the young but enthusiastic staff and the food, the chef really does know what he's about. Our only slightly negative feeling, it might have been a little cheaper for an out of season visit. I since found out that booking via the web is cheaper than the walk in rate we paid, but having done so, I don't really feel cheated as the overall experience was pretty good and we'd certainly stay here again.

Pleasantly Surprised

I, like others was dubious about staying here after reading the previous reviews, but I would definitely stay here again and you can't get a better review than that. We stayed in a very nice room overlooking the garden which had a fresh nautical feel. The bed was large and comfortable and the room was a nice size with a large balcony and clean bathroom. We didn't sample meals, and only peeked in the spa - but all looks very clean and well maintained. Stay here, Cornwall is very lacking in good hotels (that you don't pay over the odds for).

Exceeded Expectations.

from bunnco
We stayed at this hotel on a wet Wednesday in December for one night. The hotel was much better than we had been expecting and the refurbishment was nearly complete to a high standard. The room was well lit & comfortable and the large bed had crisp white sheets. The bathroom was good too. The evening dinner was good as was breakfast but the young waiting staff did lack experience, which was fine, but might become grating if the hotel was busier and in-season.
My wife enjoyed the spa pool and the gardens & the beach whilst I was at a business meeting. Good value and exceeded expectations.
I've read the other reviews and, in fairness, these were written during the refurbishment, which is now complete. Stay here. You won't be disappointed.
