Historical Traveller Reviews of Green Bough Hotel
Fantastic hotel
from tiggywPerfect - Thankyou!
from A TripAdvisor MemberHowever, as this year was a special birthday for my husband (50yrs) I therefore decided to treat him to something special, I had seen advertisements and reviews for the Green Bough over the years and longed to return, this then was the perfect opportunity! I booked the Arley (junior suit) as a birthday surprise!
We were was not disappointed, in fact it was everything I had dreamed of and more! David was thrilled to bits with his surprise (I had told him we were staying at the Comfort Inn! I did'nt tell him where we were really staying until he had parked the car in the Comfort Inn car park, its about three hotels from the Green Bough!!) We were spoiled rotten from the moment we arrived, firstly by Janice who greeted us warmly and showed us the necessities (like where to relax and to dine, and our beautiful room!) and then with the excellent service from all the staff, they were all very helpful and polite, we were made to feel welcome and very special. "Absolutely first class"
Complimentary champagne and chocolates on arriving, toiletaries in the ensuit, dressing gowns and slippers in our room (and the lovely teddy bear sat on our bed!) added to the lovely little touches which made the whole experience so extra special. Our Suit was furnished to a very high standard, beautiful, comfortable, clean and luxurious throughout. The food was out of this world, a definate culinary experience!
When I initially booked I had asked Philip if it would be possible to arrange a bouquet of flowers on my behalf for David. He assured me that was not a problem and asked me what flowers I would like and my price limit - they were absolutely beautiful, thankyou!
All in all the whole experience was one to remember always. We will definately be back when funds permit, and hopefully we wont have to wait until the next big birthday!!
Thankyou to Janice & Philip and all their wonderful staff for helping to make our stay so relaxing and extra special.
Beautiful, Clean and super friendly
from A TripAdvisor MemberI can honestly say that this is the only time I have stayed in a hotel where everything has been perfect.
Overpriced
from janices7We were 1 of 2 couples staying the evening so unfortunately, the restaurant was not open which was a HUGE hassle. I'm partially disabled due to an illness and was completely worn out from the long car ride so going out to find dinner was not something I felt like doing - we instead ordered a pizza for delivery. Upon its arrival, we found out that they "prefer" that guests don't eat in their rooms. While I understand their hesitation, it was a bit rude considering the fact that the restaurant was closed and there really aren't any restaurants within walking distance. I'm sure this helps keep the place super clean, but as other reviewers have mentioned, the hotel staff has gone overboard with respect to this issue.
Generally speaking, everything at this hotel is overpriced. If we hadn't been upgraded to the suite, I would have been terribly disappointed with the price that we paid (I saw the other rooms and they weren't worth the $ and I don't believe if we had paid full price for the suite that it would have been worth the $ either). We were charged $5 US a bottle for 4 oz of ginger ale which was ridiculous, but like I said, there aren't any shops/restaurants within close walking distance so we just sucked it up and paid. While the rooms are nice, we'd likely opt for a less expensive option.
A Luxury Stay.
from A TripAdvisor MemberYes, it is luxurious, comfortable and a smart place to stay, but anybody who has stayed there will have probably used these words before.
We would describe it as intimate and scrumptious. In the seven consecutive years we have stayed at the Green Bough there has never been a backward step. Everything has gone forward with huge leaps.
There was a time when we just came to Chester to shop. Now we go to Chester for the Hotel. Janice and Philip have become what I hope are good friends. Such is the draw of this small hotel that we always book the next stay on our arrival.
Anyway, got to dash and bring in the ducks for the night, love to both of you. Best wishes to all your staff.
s not
from callingalltheherosThe decor is all wonderful and the little touches add a talking point but sadly there is no atmosphere or character - The owners obsession with cleanliness and order seems to have stripped the hotel of any pleasure - If you were to drop a crumb or spill your drink you would no doubt not be allowed back in.
I stayed with my Girlfriend recently and we found the hotel to be not much more than a good B&B
Don't get me wrong, this is without doubt one of the cleanest hotels I've stayed in and the rooms were very nicely appointed and comfortable, if a little small.
The food was fine, a little flash - a case of presentation over substance - pricey too!!
The lady who checked us in was to say the least rather abrupt and clearly doesn't understand body language, insisting on giving us a guided tour and explaining how we can spend our time - when in fact all we wanted after a 3 hour drive was a shower and a drink.
The restaurant was rather empty for most of the evening and although we had some pleasant background music, one felt somewhat uneasy. The lounge was also a tad snug and again lacked any atmosphere - everyone sat in silence, frightened to death of creasing the cushions in this private palace.
Overall I would say that for those who think they are posh and think that £30 for a bottle of wine that is £6 at Tesco is value for money then this would be a place to consider. No notable vintage on the wine list - just typical wholesaler supplies.
It's also worth mentioning that the hotel is quite a hike into town and you have to take your key as if your not back by about 11pm the doors are locked, the lights out and the bar closed.
I would suggest a better wine list, a concierge or night bar worker and some extra thought with the menu alongside some slightly warmer and less formal staff could lift this hotel to the heights the decor and overall presentation, oh and the price, currently dictate.
A 5star hotel by any other name
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe whole experience was exemplary and I will be visiting again and again
quite good - not exceptional
from A TripAdvisor MemberLoved the bears!
from kat101If it was possible to transport this hotel around the country I'd stay here everywhere I went! This is the measure by which I compare all other hotels and sadly so far they've all come up lacking. Absolutely loved it and would definately go again when funds permit!!!!
Just what the doctor ordered!
from RhinoLeedsBefore leaving the Green Bough we booked out return visit in August.
Thanks so much to all the staff for a lovely weekend.
Top Local Tips for Chester
Politic If you are like us and cannot stand nightclubs/ pubs with blaring music and bouncers at the door, I recommend you visit The Politic,24 Watergate Row North. The staff are fab and they have a most amazing variety of cocktails etc on offer. I especially love reading the bar menu. It is obvious the owner has gone to a lot trouble concocting this and it is full of wonderful qoutes. The food is superb and is very reasonably priced. House red is £13...very reasonable. It is also an appropriate place to visit during the day as I have taken my kids there too in the past.
Upstairs at the Grill The best place to eat steak in Chester. But you must book ahead.
15 minute walk to the city or 5 minutes by taxi The hotel is situated on a busy main road; we walked into Chester in around 15 minutes. A taxi to the city centre cost just £3.70 and dropped us right outside the town hall.
