Historical Traveller Reviews of Crowne Plaza Chester Hotel

not up to expectations

from verso
First impressions when arriving was receptionist was very helpful and friendly after that only the cleaner who was on our floor new what a smile was,I had upgraded as it was my partners birthday which cost me £80 extra and to be fair for WHAT ......oh bottled water in room,a view which was nice and bed gowns which we used to keep warm as it didn't help when entering the room the window was open and as for the heating it still wasn't warm when we left sunday as it just would not adjust properly as for the wind noise both nights we really didn't sleep well at all and as for entry into the club lounge when we went at 4.30pm on saturday afternoon we entered and it was shut up inside no drinks available at all so we left...the evening meal was very nice well done to the restaurant staff working on the 16th... breakfast was just breakfast the restaurant was chilly and food luke warm for the cleanliness of the hotel overall it was spot on very clean and tidy throughout.....we would definately think twice about using this hotel again.

good location

Frankly I expected more from a Crowne Plaza. Our only "nice" experience with the staff was from the lady at reception when we checked in, after that no-one seemed to give a damn.

We were slightly concerned about some reviews that stated the hotel had air con problems and this in fact turned out to be quite true. The Double room was a decent size, comfy bed, decent size bathroom with shower, TV etc., but in spite of the bed being quite comfy, the heat in the room made sleeping almost impossible. We tried to no avail to control the temperature and had the control checked by the housekeeping staff, but the problem persisted. The window would only open a fraction and when opened the road noise was a problem.

The hotel is right in the centre, ideal for shopping and bars and restaurants and has a very small car park on site. Book your space in advance.

Stayed 2 nights - Saturday & Sunday. The hotel was full of weekend guests (Friday & Sat nights) - on Sunday morning we had to wait for 40 (yes forty) minutes to be seated for breakfast. Absolutely unacceptable. The hotel should have provided more staff - they knew they were fully booked.

When we eventually made our way to the dining room, the buffet area with fruit, cereal etc was empty. The hot buffet was appaling - anything left was dry and cremated looking. If I had known I would have gone elsewhere for breakfast.

Overall we enjoyed our stay in Chester but we will not be returning to ANY destination in the UK until after the smoking ban is introduced.

Good business class hotel in Chester

Stayed for two nights whilst on business in Chester. Room was immaculate, with lots of space and a fine bathroom with a good shower. Breakfast was fine with a good choice, but the restaurant staff are not really attentive - room for improvement there.

Hotel ideally situated for the town centre which is just a few minutes walk away.

Would definately stay again.

Good Value

Was slightly concerned about some reviews that stated the hotel had air con. problems, that was not the case, we had a double room, decent size, comfy bed, decent size bathroom with shower, TV with cable channels.

The hotel is right in the centre, ideal for shopping and bars and restaurants and has a free car park on site.

The breakfast was included and it was buffet style with fresh fruit, cereal and English available.

Overall excellent value and would return.

Overall okay, but not Crowne Plaza standard

from Dellb0y
I stayed for business in this hotel for several weeks in a row. The hotel is located close to the shopping area in Chester.
The hotel staff is very friendly and helpfull.
Rooms have a standard layout. I've stayed in several rooms during this period, but in all rooms there were some minor things wrong (cracked washhandbasin, broken lamps, airco problems). The airco problem is quite serious. The rooms are extremely warm even when you turn off the heating. The airco is not working on every floor.
This makes the room during the night quite unbearable.

The hotel restaurant is very cosy during the evening. Staff again very friendly. The have a good winelist with even 10 wines by the glass. The menu didn't change during my 10 week stay, which is a bit annoying. The food however was well prepared.
I missed however an espresso machine for a good cup of coffee.

Overall I had a good time here.

Pretty excellent on the whole.

I booked this hotel via their phoneline as all internet searches confirmed that they were full. The hotel telephone booking service was straightforward, polite and efficient and exceeded my expectations. We were to be allocated a room on arrival. We had stated a preference for a standard smoking twin, which we got. In my experience smoking rooms are often the pits but this one was excellent, situated on the first floor: very clean, very quiet and well equipped. The facilities were first class. Not a huge pool but very, very clean. We dined at the hotel and found the food and service to be very good. Staff were polite, very professional and well trained. I've never had such a quiet room in the city centre! Would have been very easy to oversleep. Breakfast was busy as the hotel was quite full but the standard was still good. Would definitely return. Overall: great hotel, very modern with high standards of cleanliness and popular with groups of ladies for obvious reasons. Well worth the money!

Too dear, not up to Crowne Plaza standard

from DamienKeegan
Now don't get me wrong... the rooms are nicely appointed, all new fittings and furnishing.

Handy for Chester town centre, which, incidentally, does not open before 9.30 am. Try buying some cufflinks for a meeting you're already late for...

What really made me not want to stay here again was the air-con system. So noisy. So, SO noisy.

At £100 a night without breakfast, I'll be staying elsewhere, loyalty card or not!

Good overall

from wifey01
Myself and my husband stayed for three nights from 26th October. The hotel is very clean, the linen and bathroom are immaculate (as most women will tell you, they're the first things we check and can make or break a stay). The breakfast is very good and offers everything from fruit and cereal to a full English, the only down side of breakfast being the juice is out of a machine. The only other problem we had was the temperature of the hotel. WHY OH WHY do they insist on having these places so hot? The window doesn't open more than about a foot, so we had to put the aircon on cold to chill the room. Overall, we would recommend this hotel. The staff are very efficient, the hotel is very clean, the breakfast is good and the location is perfect. It's literally two minutes walk from the lovely centre, and there are lots of bars and restaurants nearby, and the shops are wonderful. The parking is £7.50 per night but there are limited spaces. There's a public car park around the corner which charges the same if the hotel is full, and the hotel will give you a voucher.

Convenient and Comfortable

from Michelle8882
This is a lovely hotel and is very close to the city centre - with pubs and restaurants just a few minutes walk away. (We love Chester too).

The staff were well trained and friendly and upgraded us as they knew this was part of our honeymoon.

Very nice smart hotel

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza, Chester for a weekend.
It is a good base for shopping in Chester, the races or North Wales.
The hotel had recently been refurbished so everywhere was clean , new and fresh. The staff were all friendly and helpful and any minor problems we had were sorted out immediately.
The rooms were quiet, you could not hear people in neighbouring rooms or in the corridors.
The restaurant food and service was very good. At breakfast there was a good selection of hot and cold food but the hot was a bit dried up even at 8am.
One word of warning if you go when the racing is on you will not get in the hotel car part but there is a public one next to the hotel.

Top Local Tips for Chester

book 1 near the centre We've stayed in Chester twice and on the first occasion we stayed a fair walk from the centre of town, which if the weather isn't good then this can be a bind. The Crowne Plaza was within a short easy walking distance from everything

places to eat 'The living room' in the town is a superb lively place to eat, the food is excellent. Mezze bar is also great for a coffee in the day or a meal and drink at night.

Piccolino There is an excellent Italian restaurant called Piccolino, located on Pepper Street (walking distance from the Crowne Plaza).
