Poor Staff, really run down, dirty Rooms

I stayed here over the weekend, very hard to understand the staff, no one around to help. The picture on the website is nothing like what it looks like. It is quite run down and is in a really good need of the Hotel Inspector. I was horrified to find that the bath hadn't been cleaned as I went to take a shower and it was black and full of hair!! They changed our room which was better, but had a vent in there that all night sent cigarette smoke into our room. There is also not alot of choice of food there either. For a 4 star hotel I was horrified.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Thistle Cheltenham Hotel

£70!

from Nowley
Having already booked the hotel, I then checked this site and was so worried by the comments of other users. However, my fears and concerns were quickly dispelled.

Enjoyed our visit and found facilities good. Check in and out were both efficient and friendly. The room was presentable and the bathroom clean. Bedding and towels were fresh and clean. Pool open until a decent time, 22:00, and reasonable size and not too busy.

Hotel areas all tidy and well kept, but corridors a little cluttered in the morning due to the bedding and towels being left on the floor outside the rooms by the cleaners. Unexpected and early wake up call by cleaner, so remember to place the 'do not disturb' on to your door!
Breakfast was served to a decent time in the morning 10:00, choice excellent but the tea rather weak!

I feel this was a fair price for staying in Cheltenham in a hotel with a pool and gym. The parking charges (£5) had been discontinued during our stay and staff were generally helpful and polite. Plenty of parking and easy to find and access Cheltenham, also the park and ride if you do not wish to drive in to the town.
Would stay here again for similar price.

Horrible experience

I stayed here during the Cheltenham Science Festival and it was a horrible experience.

Room service - Incredibly slow - it took about 90 minutes to get a meal and a drink brought up

Decor - grubby and seventies!

No internet access (at least no broadband connection

Even the TV remote control needed new batteries.

Poor service, a total rip-off

Spent three nights at the Thistle Cheltenham for a friend's wedding. It took over an hour to check-in even though we had booked three months in advance. When finally checked in, was given a room that was already occupied, which could have proved extremely embarrasing as we walked in on occupiers of the room!

Bar staff could barely understand a word of English, and took 15 minutes to find the bottle of white wine we ordered. When it did finally turn up, it was room temperature, and we had to pour it ourselves. Bar prices are a total rip-off too, with small glass of coke charged at £2.50, and a bottle of water £4.50!

The room was dusty and smelt stale and musty. Found old cigarette butts down the back of the bed. This was cleaned as soon as we raised it, but not much of an apology.

Unbelievably, they ran out of sparkling wine on the second night, and offered Champage (£10 more per bottle) or Pino Grigio as an alternative!!

Considering most of the wedding party stayed at the hotel, and drank in the hotel bar three nights in a row, Thistle must have made a fortune out of us.

A real rip-off from such a large and famous hotel chain.

What a rip off!

We were highly disappointed with our stay at the Thistle in Cheltenham. After a long journey we arrived at the hotel around 11.30 pm, check-in took about 25 minutes as they had no idea how much to charge per night (we had booked on the internet 4 months previsously) The hotel had shabby decor with wallpaper pulling away from the walls. There was a mild but distinct musty smell throughout the hotel that gave it afeel of a nursing home. Our room was standard despite paying for a premier room, and the only noteable thing to say was that it was clean, which is a start I suppose.
Upon our first morning at the hotel (we were staying 2 nights) we were awoken at 8am with a knock on the door from the cleaning staff, this in itself would not have been a problem had they not then periodically knocked every 15 mins to get into the room.
I could go on but suffice to say we were disappointed and our stay in Cheltenham was only salvaged by the beautiful spa town.

Utterly ghastly

Tired hotel, sixties architecture. Rooms are spacious but extremely dog-eared and FILTHY (check the net curtains and the tops of the doors to see what I mean). Phones go unanswered. Room service slow and unreliable.£4.50 for a bottle of water in the bar Surly staff, with only a few exceptions. Buffet breakfast is truly disgusting.....not even transport caff standard. Toast is half browned on one side, cold and soggy, and stacked in piles.

Wireless broadband but only in public rooms. Next to a busy roundabout and constantly filled with business folks using the bar/lobby as a free meeting room. Usually with a constant cloud of stale smoke, too.

And it's expensive. There are many cheaper and much nicer establishments in town, and places a lot closer to the centre.

Do us a favour, Thistle - shut it down and build a decent place on the site.....

ok after they spring cleaned the room

Stay at the Thistle last year with my family. There are some good facilities at the hotel but the cleanliness and customer relations is very poor. Our room was filthy dirty on check in and it took nearly an hour to find us a clean room. Staff very arrogant and not very apologetic. The second night we were put back in the original room after it had been spring cleaned. Good breakfast. Did not pay for parking

Tired expensive and they also have the cheek to charge for parking!

Stayed at hotel for business for one night, with a view to facilitating a course the next day.

The positive stuff: Room nice size, clean and presentable. Breakfast was also pretty tolerable, although the hotel uses flasks for tea and coffee, resulting in all the hot beverages tasting of coffee, even when its tea!

Other than this, the hotel is getting tired and is pretty inaccessible if you have mobility difficulties (the lift will disclocate many loose joints on arrival at any floor!). Even being relatively mobile, which I am, I still had to drag a bag over two flights of steps before getting to the lift.

Prices at the bar and in the restaurant in the evening are steep, so avoid by catching a bus or taxi into the town if you want a night out (about £8-£10 each way). On this note, bear in mind that this hotel is close to the motorway, which is convenient for business users and those wishing to access the road network, but definately not convenient to access the town of Cheltenham (and certainly not on foot).

The only other hotels I have stayed in, in Cheltenham are The Queens, which had more character and was generally better all round, including the fact it was a 5 minute walk into the centre of the town an the Travel Inn on the A40 to the West of the town - standard "Travel Inn" type hotel; cheap and cheerful.

Finally, you would have thought being out of town, the Thistle would have ample parking, which it does. It was certainly not full when I visited, and the number of spaces should be ample to accommodate all guests. However, they add insult to injury by adding £5 a night for the priveledge of parking. That for me was the final straw and I will not return unless I really have to - will go for the local Travel Inn up the road - at least you know what you will get for your money!!

JUST OK

Great Location

Booked this hotel for our anniversary break, before reading the reviews and staying at the Thistle in Bristol for work. The Bristol Thistle was the worse hotel I have ever stayed in and after reading the reviews for this one I was very apprehensive.
On arrival the hotel did look a little dated from the outside however, on entering to reception I was pleasantly surprised. The reception staff were very pleasant and could not have been more helpful. The room we were allocated (we booked an executive room) was really nice. There was free dressing gowns and slippers and the room was clean and tidy and we have a pleasant view. We had room service and this arrived quickly and was really tasty. The breakfast was also tasty, you could have what ever you wanted and the waiters/waitresses were very pleasant and helpful. Not sure what people expect sometines and yes there is always room for improvement, some of the decor could do with updating but I would definately stay here again

Alright on the night

Stayed the night here for a training course the next day. Large room very nice overlooking tennis court and indoor swimming pool. Staff at reception and bar were very polite and friendly. The bar meal I had was not of a high standard but the Hotel Manager was very quick to address this, agreed with my comments and instantly apologised. Breakfast buffet was a somewhat limited selection of hot and cold but very similar to many other hotels I have stayed at.

I really appreciated their FREE wireless internet access and made full use of it.

Good room, friendly service and free internet access - I'm happy.

Top Local Tips for Cheltenham

The best restaurant.......... If you like truly excellent food and great service in a tranquil setting, please try Merlot's Brasserie. This was the best experience we have had for quite a while.....really well worth a visit. The prices may look to be a pound or two more than you would pay elsewhere but well worth the money.

Park and ride Heard that parking could be difficult in Cheltenham. Used Arle park and ride-parked all day and 4 people can travel for £2. Buses start at 8am and last one at 6.15pm and found it ideal for what we wanted

Excellent Taxi Service Use the free phone at Hotel reception, that cab company are superb!
