So what shattered the peace and tranquillity'? Quite simply, the hotel had a function on Friday night and an evening wedding reception on the Saturday night.
The noise from the Friday guests on the outdoor patio made it difficult to sleep on a hot night with the bedroom windows open. A rainy evening would perhaps have solved the problem. Mind you, they did leave around midnight so if you go to bed after that you'll be okay.
Saturday night was an all together different story. The guests at the evening wedding reception seemed to take over all but the restaurant. They had organised a disco in the private room but that did not contain them. They filled the bar, patio and pretty much every available ground-floor space too. It was far from peaceful, in fact it was overwhelming. We were afforded some comfort (by a thoughtful waitress) by taking our after-dinner coffee in the breakfast room. The night was a bit cooler so we were able to close our bedroom windows to cut out the noise from the patio, which to be fair did subside, again around midnight.
The hotel is good, the food is very good, the staff are friendly and helpful and Robin, mine host is excellent and extremely professional. It is good to see a business that is busy and doing well but because necessary functions cannot be wholly self-contained I would be reticent about booking there again. Maybe if I was looking to book a mid-week break in the winter I would consider staying there again. However I would call the hotel to ascertain whether any functions were planned during my proposed visit.
Taking a weekend break in the UK is often improved by good weather; in this case I would have been happier if snow had fallen.
Overall, this is a good hotel with a lot to offer but plan your stay carefully if peace and tranquillity' is important.
