Historical Traveller Reviews of Swallow Hilltop Hotel
Friendly staff
from Stubble
We booked through Easybreak for a mid-week short break, and for the money, the Hilltop Hotel was excellent value. It is motel style, so good for a couple of nights. The staff are friendly and considerate, the rooms clean and adequate, the bar and dining areas capacious and comfortable. The food is good, with a generous choice at breakfast and dinner. About 30 minutes from the Lakes, and five minutes from the attractions of the City. We would do it again.
Fantastic Value
from gladysScotland
I had read some dismal reviews on this hotel, but was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it was a bit old fashioned, but the rooms were quite spacious with good furnishings, bathroom , trouser press and even an iron and ironing board!! Towels changed daily and extra towels provided for the small but adequate spa. Food was fine, although the menu remained the same for the 5 nights we were there. Well situated for the city centre as well as minutes from the motorway. Very convenient for day trips to the Lakes. The whole 5 nights DBB only cost us 129 pounds each. The desk rate said ONE HUNDRED POUNDS for B&B. If I'd paid that I WOULDN'T be writing such a good review, but for what we paid, it was great. Book via Easy-breaks.
Nice Anniversary Weekend
from whimbrelboy
When we booked it was a Holiday Inn, when we arrived it was the Swallow Hilltop (had changed hands) but made no difference. The hotel is located just off the M6 only a few minutes from Carlisle city centre ideal . Nice clean rooms with nice restaurant and leisure club, which includes an indoor heated pool, sauna, spa, fully equipped gymnasium and steam room. Would recommend
rather tatty hotel
from jencon
My partner and I stayed here this weekend and although the hotel in general was passable the cleanliness was not. The room was very dusty although the bed was clean. We used the pool but both agreed that the whole of the leisure facilities needed a good steam clean. The staff are polite and helpful and it's fairly central but it is fairly tatty. A touch up of paint on woodwork and walls would make a big difference to the overall look. Our room had wallpaper peeled off half way up the wall but it had just been painted over, as if that's going to stop you seeing the peeled off paper. Would stay again if there was no where else but would not be my first choice.
re travelling through.

The good stuff- It's in a quiet location, and the room was comfortable enough (although smallish), the staff were friendly (but hard to find). You also get free use of the health club including a indoor heated pool, sauna, steam room and gym- not something you get often at this price.
The not so good- Has a dated motel style interior that has seen better days and is shabby in places. Poor for business travellers with no wifi or Internet access in rooms. Not really convenient for town unless your driving but not out in the countryside either. The restaurant food was distinctly below average for the price and the bar is soulless and not soemwhere you'd want spend much time. When I stayed there the whole hotel was dead after 8.30.
Overall it's difficult to say who this hotel would appeal to, it's not ideal for the busness traveller but not somewhere you would want to spend your lesuire time either. OK for one night if you're travelling through.

Great staff, shame about the hotel
from mmqc
Only stay here is if all of Carlisle's other hotels are fully booked. The dead flower display, broken shutter and grey net curtains should be a warning. The absence of the hotel manager, a definite alarm bell. Tiny rooms, miniscule pillows and generally shabby interior everywhere are bad enough, but the hotel excels itself in one area in particular - portion control. The "leisure" facilities are compact and just as tatty as the rest of the hotel. Grand views from the front of a telecommunications tower in the style of Eiffel. The helpful and smiling staff (if you can find them) is the only saving grace.
A very good place to stay in Carlisle
from arik11
This nice Hotel in Carlisle will make you a good central lodging place for your trips to east/west lake district as well as southern Scotland. The hotel is great except beware of the Rooms in the main building as some of them are extremely small ( We had to change to another room due to a problem in the original room-that's how I found out about the other rooms). We finally got a room on the ground floor.A very big, nice decorated, comfortable room. The place has its own health club.Nice.A big bar as well. You will enjoy it.
Fantastic staff
from Vanessa5076
The Swallow Hilltop is lovely. Attentive staff (particularly in the restaurant), lovely food and nice hotel rooms.
The only thik that could be improved is the quality of the communal areas, the floors are dirty and some of the wallpaper was hanging off.

dreadful place to stay
from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed as part of a Trafalgar first class tour in this hotel. Rooms were small and shabby. Noise and smell from kitchen exahaust disturbed us all night. Not enough room to lie on bed without having head touching headboard at one end, and wardrobe with trouser press at other end. Bathroom had no facility for storage of personal toiletries. Breakfast menu and dinner menu, a la carte was okay, but nothing special. Reception staff not particularly helpful.

My wife and I ended up at the Swallow Hilltop at short notice. The rooms were basic and clean, corridors a bit shabby mind you. Breakfast was OK but nothing special. I would not rush back but at short notice it served its purpose

Quick Getaway If arriving from the north, most route finders will bring you in to the North of carlisle. Ignore them and travel one junction further , marked carlisle South. Hotel is 2 minutes away. Be wary of 30 MPH limit and turn left at the Car Wash opposite Laura Ashley Interiors.
