Worst UK hotel

Last week I had the misfortune of spending a night (2 days, 26 and 27 Oct 05)at the Cambs Moathouse. First I was checked into a room that was already occupied. Colleagues who had arrived days earlier found to their surprise they had been checked out! The room I eventually got had hair in the bath and even worse - hairs in the bed. I slept on my own clothes which i laid out over the sheets, worst night ever, got maybe 3 hours sleep. Despite advising of specific dietary requirements it seemed to come as a surprise I and others in my party were vegans. The food was awful and we twice sent it back. The staff were surly and made it clear we had inconvenienced them. The room rate on the paperwork was incorrect. Papers and folders disappeared from our meeting room. Just horrendous. I left there exhausted and starving, not to mention being in need of a good scrub.

Very average - not terrible but not good

from weekendHertfordshire
First the good points, good room size, lovely view, well situated, then, the 'incidents'. Open safety pin in bedcovers (2 stitched together for some reason) pricked my arm, could have been more dangerous. Ok was changed immediately with a free bottle of wine as compensation but I'd rather not have a mark in my arm. Then, the food. Evening meal - chef tried I suppose, but most of it was either hackneyed, overcooked or in the case of dessert, overloaded with sugar and left by the whole party.
Then the pool incident, door from hotel to pool was locked once we had swum, with receptionist who had key refusing to leave her post as she was on her own. Door was only round the corner, ut she suggested we go right round the outside of the hotel to get back to the room, in December ! With damp swimming costumes and flip flops.....

Very Average

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and asked for a suite. When we checked in the receptionist was miserable and didn't even look up to greet us. The keys didnt work twice for our room and then when we got to the room it looked like a standard double room. small stuffy and old fashioned. The suites differ from a standard because they offer you complimentary sweets and water!
We wanted to open the sliding window, but this was jammed. I rang reception and the girl just huffed and said "try pulling the lever down" as I told her, this was the only way to open the window anyway. I had to ring them twice more before someone came up to sort it out. This seemed like too much trouble.
The room was average for the price but Cambridge itself is a lovely place. I would go back to Cambridge but not to this hotel. Over priced for what it is. Staff were moody and unhelpful. Our breakfast was included in the price however, we were not told this nor were we told what time to go down for breakfast so we assumed the breakfast was extra. One good point was the food in the restaurant for dinner. It was superb, other than that 4/10. I wouldn't bother with this hotel.

Very poor value for the money. Overpriced

Location a bit tricky to get to if you don’t have proper directions – due to the one-way system around town and road closures during pedestrian shopping hours!

Arrived at hotel and got parked ok in the complimentary (for hotel guests) car park. Didn’t have to queue at reception – bonus! Got our room keys and the receptionist wrote down our room number 211 on the card. We went to our room as stated on the card – only to find that neither key card worked the door! Went back to reception and said that neither keycard worked for room 211 so she reprogrammed them Went back upstairs, tried the first on – it didn’t work, then tried the second one – which worked but upon walking into the room we soon realised that someone else’s stuff was already in the room!! Quickly headed back downstairs and told her, she looked into it and realised we were supposed to be in room 241 – her writing had made the 4 look like a 1. We then got the keys for our actual room and went upstairs.

Upon entering the room it looks exactly like a room in the holiday-inn chain. Pretty small (for the money per night) and the bathroom was ok, nothing special though! A bit disappointed that we paid £139 (which was actually a cheap rate!) However, bed was very comfortable.
The gym was adequate – not huge but had a variety of machines (1 of each) to keep you busy! The pool was nice and there was also a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and solarium – which again, were all free to hotel residents.

Breakfast – hmmmm, where do I start. At weekend it is served until 10am. We got down there at 9:45am and found lots of people sitting around. As the hotel was full for this particular weekend, they didn’t have enough tables for people breakfasting. So you had to put your name on the list and wait to be called. 20 minutes later we were in – only to find hardly any food left! We were told that more would be our shortly – another 15 minutes later and they bought some more food out – which obviously by then meant that the food that was there originally had all gone a bit congealed!! Managed to get enough scraps together to get rid of the hunger-pangs for a while!
As we booked the breakfast in advance we only had to pay £8 ( I say “only” because if we’d have paid when we arrived its £13.50 each!!) but NO WAY was the breakfast worth £8, let alone £13.50!! Very disappointed so we told the receptionist when we checked out and they knocked the price off our total bill (think they must’ve had a lot of complaints that morning!) so all-in-all the whole breakfast process took us over an hour!!!!

The hotel location was central and inside was nice and clean but I would not go back to this hotel – unless it was £50 a night with breakfast included!! It was very very overpriced for what it was and the size of the rooms were one of the smallest I’ve stayed in (even though this was the most expensive hotel I’ve stayed in in England!)

Very disappointed :(

Nice Hotel

Had a relaxing one night stay at this hotel. Friendly staff, good leisure facilities and the dinner was lovely. However, breakfast was a complete shambles. Waited ages to be seated. Then we had to wait around 15 minutes for our coffees. When the coffees did arrive, the waitress couldn't remember which was de-caf and which was regular! Overall, good value for the price we paid.

Do ask for a fan as there is no air conditioning in the rooms.

fine location, good for conferences

from A TripAdvisor Member
just stayed here for a couple of nights for a conference and it was fine for that purpose. i wouldn't pick it for myself if i was staying in cambridge privately. there was nothing wrong - the staff were very helpful for the conference and the rooms we used were suitable. food was fine, but there are good places to eat in the city, and as a vegetarian i found a really nice veggie place just opposite Kings College - Rainbow bistro. the hotel was bland in the sense that it was smart, clean, and very standard, apart from the location - right on the river. the gym and pool area is fine and i made use of that. there were nice touches - many hotels have a bowl of apples in reception for you to help yourself but here they asked for a donation to a charity for the apple and i liked that. i wouldn't have wanted to pay the room bill myself - or if i had i'd want something rather more stylish or imaginative.

Just OK for the price

I thought that the hotel was just average, but it came with what I would consider a high cost to quality ratio. My wife and I stayed there in June and found out the hard way that it can, every so often, get hot in England. And, with our room not having A/C, this made staying in it uncomfortable. Luckily the windows opened and there was an occasional cool breeze.

There were two good features about the hotel. The first one was that it was centrally located in the town, making it an easy walk to most anything. The River Cam runs alonside the hotel, and there is a nice park for taking a leisurely stroll, or a flat bottomed boat ride. My wife and I walked the path that follows the river and it was very nice. The only problem with having a nice park and river for boating right next to the hotel, as you can imagine, it gets fairly noisey from the crowds. Especially when your window is open to try and catch a breeze into the room.
The park and river is really popular among the locals (mostly college kids) to hang out when the weather is nice.
The other good feature was that the hotel resturant was pretty good. A little expensive, but worth it. We had breakfast, and dinner there. The dinner was out on the patio overlooking the river and it was very scenic.

Pros: Central location, scenic river location. Nice resturant.

Cons: No A/C. Noise coming from the park and River Cam

Do yourself a favour, stay at a Travel Inn

from aliandmark
Well what can I say, vastly overpriced.

I stayed at the Garden House for 1 night. The room and bed was comfortable, but that's about all I can say for the hotel. The room was far from well equipped, no hairdryer and no welcome pack.

To be quite honest I was expecting a little bit of luxury and what I got was a room which cost me 3 times the amount of a Travel Inn and not as nice.

I cannot believe that this hotel has achieved #1 in the ratings. Do yourself a favour and save yourself some money.... stay at a nearby Travel Inn.

Great location

from CarolynBristol_UK
This is a good hotel, clean, well serviced, nice bar with a terrace, a pool with doors that open onto the riverbank, but it really wins because of its location on the River Cam. There is a boat hire place next door, the Backs and the Town are on it's doorstep so it's a great place to base yourself for a mini break in Cambridge.

Superb hotel in central location

from hairy_cornflake
Just returned from a 2-night stay at the Cambridge Garden Moathouse Hotel. It was superb. Excellent location backing onto the river and only 5 minutes walk from Kings College etc. Added bonus was a fine 3-course meal included in the special 2-night Spring Break offer price. Will definitely stay here again whenever we return to Cambridge.

Not as nice as I expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
From the review I saw here, it seemed to be a very nice hotel, but it was only ok. It was an average hotel, but was not that nice as I expected or associated with its price.
It was a big hotel, with so many rooms, so I think they didn't do a good job in keeping its quality. The room was not that new or well managed, but it was clean. The location is great, next to River Cam. Don't forget to ask for a room with the river view if possible. The view and breakfast were great, and probably the only worth points of the hotel.
It was too expensive a hotel in Cambridge, and should provide better service and room quality according to their price. I stayed in a very nice B&B in Oxford, and was much cheaper.
Won't especially recommend for staying in this hotel, only if you can get a good deal.

Top Local Tips for Cambridge

Evensong at Kings college One of those things 'to do before I die'. I enjoyed it for the experience but wouldn't do it again

Bikes Consider renting bikes for a week. You can cover most of Cambridge easily on bike.

Punting If you have never gone punting before and no matter how good you think you are, take a chaffuered punt first. By doing this you will get a tour of the colleges and bridges and not take the risk of falling in. I would recommend the one inside Trinity by the river.
