A bit fo both

I agree with some elements of all these reviews. My partner and I only stayed for the one night so we had limited experience of the place.

On arrival you drive down a long driveway and you really are treated to an amazing view of the house, unpack the bags at reception as the car park is a short walk and with heavy bags would be a struggle. The reception and the staff are great and very helpful, the hotel looks fantastic.

We had a porter to take us to the room, which was also a good walk, at one end of the house. We had to avoid wedding guests and the bride and groom on the way but thats fine!

The room itself was amazing - one of the best - plasma screen etc... we went to dinner and then got a dvd from the bar to fall asleep to! Free dvd retail is a great idea and they had some fairly recent films. Once the lights were out this place is totally dark so it was a great nights sleep... apart from the heat that is. It was boiling in the room and the portable aircon really did not help.

Breakfast was not great - my partners was fine but I asked for tea and that never came - we asked for hash browns and they didn't have any. I had a lonely plate of sausages!

Overall this place is great, the house is lovely, the fish ponds and gardens and relaxing, there is a pool but its outdoors - we would go back... part of the handpicked range of hotels and we only paid £115.00 b&b.

the best hotel in the world

The person who wrote the last review must have stayed somewhere else. This hotel has no peeling paint, has no swimming pool and the food is fantastic. We stayed here three times and drive from croydon just for the evening. The breakfast is to die for and the rooms that have a cuddly pony as a do not desturb sign have a plasma screen at the bottom of the bed and a dvd playa. A great bar and great place. The grounds are massive and well tended.

A wonderful week in a very well run hotel

We have just returned from a family week at Rhinefield with 14 of us, aged from 17 months to 70 years. It surpassed our expectations and met all our hopes. We are a demanding and well travelled group and it was a pleasure to find the various elements universally good with none of the small irritations that so often let hotels down. Very well appointed rooms and bathrooms, plenty of space, delightful gardens, walks straight into the New Forest, and staff who enjoyed looking after us. Food was imaginative and very well presented, with special attention to give us some extra choices as we were there for 6 nights. Our young grandchildren were made to feel very welcome and the Easter egg hunt was great fun for them. An impromptu birthday tea and cake were no problem despite a busy day with other guests.
The room TV screens and DVD players are excellent for keeping the children happy in the evening so the adults can have a civilised dinner!
The staff clearly have a good team spirit and enjoy their work. The children want to return and the adults will probably do so. I have no hesitation in recommending a visit and we shall look forward to trying other hotels in this group.
Hard to reconcile this with the last review. Do give it a try!

One of the worst hotels in the world

I can understand why anyone has given this a positive review at all. I staid at the hotel with my girlfriend and was woefully disapointed.

The pool area is scrappy and peeling paint. The food insipid and unappealing. The public areas are cold and smell musty.

The crazy thing is the building and ground have so much potential but it is clear that is under poor quality management with an ongoing lack of investment.

Avoid like the plague!

A delightful stay!

Arrived on New Year's Day to get away from it all and relax prior to the "back to work" of January. Our stay was really special. From booking right through to departure the service was outstanding - nothing was too much trouble. Little touches like the bar staff looking up our names and addressing us personally made us feel special. Our room and bathroom were luxurious, with the fabulous 45" plasma TV. A comfy bed, and total blackout, with no noise from other rooms either, guaranteed an excellent night's sleep. We took dinner in the hotel and it was outstanding -excellent value for innovative and delicious modern cuisine. The restaurant was full but there were plenty of staff who anticipated your every need without being stifling.
If you want to relax in a beautiful location and be looked after as if you are special, this is an excellent choice

Dissapointing

very disappointed. We enjoy country house retreats however Rhinefiled was too busy and possibly understaffed. We had a letter warning there were occasional weddings which could be noisy. But were also told in the confirmation of booking letter that there were areas such as private bar and lounge strictly for residents. We found that this was not the case there were wedding guests everywhere 2 weddings on our stay. Enjoying themselves as one would expect excitable and noisy which we didn't begrudge but there was simply no relaxing quiet area for us to use. Next morning we queued for an hour for breakfast then waited an hour for breakfast. then it took an 45 minutes queue to check out. Staff were stressed and trying their best in difficult circumstances, but we felt the problems were inevitable. We shall revert back to staying in more low key personal country hotels.

Fantastic getaway

Very nice hotel, good value if you check out the special offers on the Website. We paid £195 for dinner bed and break. Meal was great, refurbed rooms are stunning. Lovely grounds etc. Would recommend with total confidemce even though breakfast service was a tad shabby.

-Service was absolutely impeccable (Reception, housekeeping, dinner, breakfast, bar)
-Beautiful surroundings and gardens
-Room of high standard, plasma screen, dvd/cd player
-Great breakfast
-Feeding the fish in the pond


Cons
-Food not outstanding, don’t take the foie gras, tasteless, same for Sauternes charged at £5.50, poor, no fruits de mer little fish choice.
-Wine list expensive
-Bar prices high as well (£7.40) for a 10Y single malt...
-Not much intimacy in the main restaurant, tables are side by side
- No interesting TV channels (5 SKY sport and channel 5 and ITV ...).
- No Library

Definitely recommended for the service and scenery, but I wouldn't dine there again.
Efforts to be made on the dinner menu and bar prices.
Also go in the summer to enjoy the swimming pool and tennis courts.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed at Rhinefield house hotel last weekend. The location is lovely, you really do feel that you are away from it all, but I am not sure I would recommend the hotel.

The staff are very attentive, almost a little too much, we found it a bit pretentious, it was trying too hard, which prevented us relaxing as much as we would have liked.

It is a funny mismatch of styles... Modern and minimalist in the bedroom, heavy and ornate in the dining room, and a 70’s looking conservatory on the side. The corridors were cold; as though management were saving money by only heating the rooms that were used the most – and the most special room – the al hambra room is only available for private dining at a high additional cost.

No doubt in Summer, with the use of the outdoor pool and the grounds and drinks on the terrace you would have a wonderful time , but it is not as comfortable as it could be.

Great - luxurious, romantic, good value

We came for a special one-night stay, nervous whether the place would be as special as promised. The sunshine helped, but the reality of this hotel exceeded the photos and promises in the website, and gave us a memorable experience. Our room was of the most basic type in the hotel, a downstairs double in the accommodation block, and was excellent - large (not huge) and extremely well-furnished, clean and comfortable. It was also refeshing to see a modern accommodation block constructed sensitively, in matching materials, and in such a way as to enhance the main building rather than be a carbuncle attached to a masterpiece. The service was faultless and the staff friendly. We didn't dine in, choosing to take a luxurious champagne picnic dinner into the sunny forest nearby instead. The hotel breakfast was excellent, and was preceded by a swim in the pool and half a pound of wild blackberries from the bushes outside the room. We both spend 50+ nights/year in hotels worldwide on business, and this hotel delivered the special romantic, pampered sensation that we were seeking, and left us with a feeling of great value-for-money.

Great fun at Il Palio 2 Highly recommend Il Palio 2, Italian restuarant next to Brockenhurst station. The restuarant is in an old engine house in teh station car park, it has heaps of character and serves great pizza, pasta, fish & steaks. Highly recommended for a fun evening out. I would advise booking, especially on a Fri or Sat night.

Osbourne house Take a ferry to the Isle of White for the day from Lyminton with the car and visit Osbourne House .Amazing! Also visit the old dockyard in Portsmouth approx 1 hour from Brockenhurst,Victory, Warrior and The Mary Rose are a must and also take the boat trip around the Harbour.
