What a let down!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have just returned from a 3 night stay at The Brigstow and what a dissappointment it was! The rooms are small with very little storage space for clothes etc.The beds are solid wooden slatted ones with very little to offer in the way of comfort and have blankets which in this day and age is very old fashioned. Being as the floors are wood throughout the hotel the noise of guests walking about and moving furniture in the rooms above is accentuated. On the second day of my stay after the room was serviced I found the tea and coffee had not been replenished,so I mentioned it to the receptionists (who by the way did not seem to comprehend much English) and was eventually given a plate with the necessary requirements on. The third day of my stay exactly the same thing happened! The bar area of the hotel is totally uninviting as the "trendy" seats are uncomfortable and obviously not designed for sitting on for any length of time. Surely the idea of a bar is to encourage people to sit and drink and spend their money! The only thing in favour of this hotel is its location by the river and the numerous restaurants in the vicinity. I have stayed in many hotels around the country but I shall not be returning to this one.

Great place to Stay

As I had to stay overnight in Bristol my secretary tried to get me a room.Normally I stay in one of the chain 4 stars but on this night they were all full and I am glad that they were.
The Brigstow does not come cheap but it is well worth the extra few pounds. The hotel is right on the waterfront with only a lane inbetween it and the water. My room was on the front and it was quiet too..such a rarity in a city centre.
The bedroom was very stylish and had everything I needed including fresh air from the balcony French doors but get the plasma screen tv in the bathroom for something a bit different !
I also really liked the hotel staff, they were quite young but well trained and with a genuine desire to please in a relaxed manner. The restaurant on the ground floor was also very good with a lot of local food which I thought was a nice touch.
Check in and out went well and yes I will stay at TheBrigstow when I am next in the Bristol area.

The X Factor in style!

There is no other hotel in Bristol I would choose to stay. The hotel’s location is perfect to see the city, eat in the many restaurants or enjoy a few cheeky beers on the waterfront. The overall service is exemplary as well as the comfortable stylish rooms and décor. My room was on the sixth floor with magnificent views of the river and the city. The bathrooms are superb with the bath and shower completely separate, not to mention the plasma screen TV in the bathroom! It was great to have free access to the near by gym and squash club.

As I travel worldwide, it was good to see that the hotel was partnered up with British Airways, which provided me with some detailed flight information from Bristol International Airport. The hotel restaurant was lovely as it overlooks the river – I really recommend the fish pie – absolutely delicious! The bar serves well-chilled beverages and the staff were really helpful and friendly. Although my visit was with work, I will definitely be bringing my partner with me for a relaxing weekend very soon. Well done to the Brigstow staff!

Style over substance

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was a very unfortunate hotel experience. While the rooms are quite magnificent, well-designed with some nice touches, like the plasma screen TV in the bath, the hotel as a whole reflects an obssesion with style over substance. When I arrived, they had no record of my reservation, despite the fact that I had booked directly with them and confirmed it that morning. The reception staff was disinterested and unwelcoming. In fact, they made me feel that continuing their conversation was more important than making me feel welcome. Once I had arrived in the room, I discovered that the bed was uncomfortable and there was nothing to watch on the TV in the bath except the 5 UK channels and the awful Sky News. Was very disappointed by that as even the most basic hotel in Belgium offers much more than that. There was no bottle opener to help open my beer bottle. I asked the night receptionist to provide me a comment card under the door but that wasn't done. The breakfast was nice but that was pretty much the only good thing and even then I had to ask three times for more coffee. I would keep away from this hotel for subsquent visits to Bristol.

Slightly quirky rooms, but I liked it

from RoamingScot
I recently stayed here several times on business. Since I was on a corporate rate, I got the rooms at the back, so didn't get to experience the view over the water.

To me, the rooms had a bit more character than a standard hotel - the rug, the wooden flooring, the way the bed was placed at an angle in the room, and the tile TV in the bathroom (!) - which made it a pleasant place to stay. The rooms are a decent size, especially the bathrooms. I didn't have an evening meal in the restaurant, but only because the hotel is well located, with lots of eating places a few minutes away. I did take breakfast, and appreciated the freshly squeezed orange juice and good, strong coffee.

Things to watch out for are occasional noise in some locations in the hotel - both from the plumbing in other rooms, and from a large fan at the back of the hotel which started up at about 5 in the morning when I was there - and erratic hot water temperatures in some rooms, with the water going from cool to scalding and back again in a few seconds. However, these are minor gripes. I enjoyed staying at the Brigstow, and would happily go back.

Stylish but noisy

from Claire_murray
Enjoyed my stay there. The rooms are modern - woodern floors, rugs, plasma screen TVs in the bathroom(!?!). But the beds were hard and in my twin room one of them sunk in the middle. Although I was at the end of the corridor the other guests were incredibly noisy - the last ones went to bed at 4am and everyone on the floor knew they had! A party in a neighbouring building also went on till the early hours. Suggest anyone staying here asks for a room at the front of the building!

Very stylish hotel

from petsounds
Just returned from a two-night break and thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the stay - the room, check-in and out and the continental breakfast. Riverside location is very peaceful and staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. Deserves its 4 stars and I would definitely return if I went to Bristol again.

Much better value than the Marriott Royal

from nova
Had a very pleasant weekend here in March, room was less than £70 per night through laterooms.

I had a decent sized room with river view and very nice bathroom...the plasma screen is a bit of a gimmick but it does allow you to listen to the radio while lying in the bath.

One thing which I particularly liked was that the window looking onto the river actually opens fully, unlike the trend for hotel windows which open just a tiny crack.

I have three criteria to judge hotel breakfasts by and the Brigstowe hit the mark on all three - good coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice and plump herby sausages.

The location is pretty good is well; about 15 minutes walk from Temple Meads, 5 minutes from the centre of the town and a good selection of pubs and restaurants close by.

Overall I prefered the Brigstowe to the Marriott Royal (where I usually stay) - a nicer location, more competent staff and and more relaxed atmosphere.

Excellent Hotel

from RPGUk
I stayed at this hotel in january this year. The bedrooms are fairly spacious and modern as is the bathroom. The room was spotlessly clean and the staff were friendly and obliging. The buffet breakfast is good also. There is a plasma screen in every bathroom which to be frank is tiny and just a gimmick really. This hotel is well located and good value for money.

Lovely hotel, poor staff, cold breakfast

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed for one night in Feb 2005. Modern, well-designed, clean hotel, which is let down by the indifferent staff who clearly think they're too cool for the job, and an almost cold breakfast.

Top Local Tips for Bristol

Eating out. Try Loch Fyne(Smokehouse) on the river front. Fabulous seafood selection. Also try Severnshed stylish and great food. You must book though to avoid disappointment.

Queen Square Pubs Definitely plenty of dining and drinking around Queen Square. I particularly enjoyed 3 Sugar Loaves at the base of the Christmas Steps.

Wonderful City Wander around this great city full of things to see and do. Loads of good eating places and a great night life.
