Breakfast disaster

The hotel facilities were excellent, but the service was not what I would expect. We had to queue for twenty minutes for breakfast on Sunday morning. There were too few staff to clear the tables. Don't they know how many people they have staying? We also encountered bar staff who didn't know what rose wine was and a very slow response when we discovered that we had no tea in our room. A nice hotel, well located, but poorly staffed.

Wonderful hotel

from Itchy_English_Feet
The Bristol is an excellent hotel in the heart of Bristol. Located in the harbour area, it is a 5 minute walk from the city centre and about a 10-15 minute walk from the lovely Clifton village area.

The rooms have been recently renovated and are really plush, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The Nespresso machine is a nice touch (even if the coffee that comes from it is terrible!). Some other reviewers commented on noise at night, from the bars across the water in the harbour area, but we didn't hear a sound.

Staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful, and the food at breakfast was really excellent.

I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Lovely Hotel, Great Location

from GloucesterDave
From the outside the Hotel looks very ordinary, a typical 1960's Concrete carbuncle. But inside it is very smart. We requested a room overlooking the floating harbour it was very well appointed top quality furnishings huge flat sceen TV etc. Very convenient for the local bars, restaurants and night life. Very handy car park next door, £8.00 for 24 hours.
The bar overlooks the waterside and boats, but we thought £6.50 was rather a lot for a glass of wine. Our main problem was the Sunday morning breakfast service, there was a long queue for a table, then a queue for the self service food, there were no eggs available and no tea, coffee or toast despite asking three times! If I stayed again I would use a local bar or cafe for breakfast. I did complain and they knocked the £8.00 car park charge off and told me it was often like that on a Sunday.

Good value for money and a great location

from Fastflight
I booked in to this hotel at the last minute on Easter Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. I stayed here many years ago when it was called the Unicorn Hotel but it has clearly had a complete makeover. We had two rooms, one for single occupancy. The double for my wife and I cost £80 and the room for my daughter was £74 all of which included breakfast. Both rooms were spacious and furnished to a very high standard each with a nice, big double bed and a huge flat screen TV. A nice touch was the espresso coffee making machine. We stayed on the sixth floor which had a view over road rather than the more attractive back of the hotel with the views of the floating harbour. However it did mean it was nice and quiet.

The location is perfect for seeing most of Bristol's sights and because they have done up the floating harbour in recent years there's a nice feel to the whole area with lots of cafes, bars etc nearby. Its especially nice when the weather is good as it was when we stayed.

We had dinner in the hotel restaurant which, being a grill room, doesn't have a very extensive menu. However the food was very good, the 10 oz Rib-eye steak I ordered was cooked perfectly and the service was friendly and efficient. The wine list is a bit over-priced in my view although you can get a decent bottle for less than £20 if you look carefully. Although the restaurant wasn't that busy it had a nice atmosphere and a good location overlooking the harbour area. It deserved to be busier than it was in my opinion.

Breakfast was a typical buffet style operation which provided a good selection of traditional english breakfast food along with more continental style offerings. It was efficiently run as well with the food being replenished frequently. You could eat as much as you wanted which meant that we were able to skip lunch that day! Check out was quick, efficient and friendly with no surprises on the bill either. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Bristol. There is an NCP car park next door to the hotel and you can gain access to the car park directly from your bedroom corridor using your hotel key which is very handy. Parking is free between 17:30 and 09:30 if you get your ticket validated by the hotel when you check out. One word of warning though - I ended up paying £4 extra because I left the car park at 09:45. The smart thing to do if staying at a weekend would be to move your car onto the street in front of the hotel before 09:30 thus avoiding this extra charge.

Wonderful stay in Bristol hotel

from Bigb0i
Stayed for the weekend with wife and was very impressed overall with the hotel. To get complimentary parking for 8GBP for the whole weekend would be good value on its own. Then breakfast was great with numerous hot dishes till 10am! And a fantastic deal was also included in the offer for less than advertised rate.
Room was modern with flat screen and internet provided too.
Though noise from road was a disturbance because room was facing the road -why would anyone be honking at 2am in the morning beats me- but next time i'll be sure to request room facing the river.

Smart and a bargain at offer price

from Phunkstar
We took advantage of a bargain rate of £65 a night for a standard room. The room was small but very clean, nice free toiletries in the bathroom. Our room was at the front of the hotel so not much of a view but we were using it as a crash pad after being out all day. The breakfast buffet was nice but really expensive. Good location within walking distance of the town and next to the river but a taxi ride away from the Clifton area, which is easily the most picturesque area of Bristol. Parking next to the hotel was £8 for the whole weekend which was good.

very nice but knocked up by cleaner at 8.30am on a Sunday

from mbarkworth
Room was very nice, all mod cons. Nice flat screen TV, Nespresso machine etc etc. No hairdryer though! Only problem was the cleaner knocked loudly to attempt to clean the room at 8.30am on a sunday (check out is 12pm). She worked her way down the corridor so I imagine we were not the only ones she disturbed. So... make sure you put your do not disturb sign out.

Great location but would be expensive at half the price.....

from StortfordSB
Not easy to find by car, but dont ring for directions, the staff dont know Bristol; nor their right from their left. 25 minutes to check in, 20 mins to queue for breakfast; 20 mins to check out. Asked for paper, which I didn't get. And was £160! About the maximum I have ever paid outside London.
Location good; rooms fine, but on night we were there hotel couldn't cope with number of guests and was way too pricey.

Lovely hotel, great location

from JSB1119
We stayed at this hotel for a night as we were visiting relatives in Bristol. The exterior of the hotel is not up to much and we nearly drove right past but inside of the hotel is a different matter. We parked on the NCP carpark next to the hotel and paid for a weekend ticket at the hotel receiption which was £8, this worked out much cheaper than paying the normal NCP charges. The check-in procedure was very quick and the staff friendly enough. Our room was on the 6th floor and was lovely, the view from our window overlooked the harbour and the bars/clubs over the other side of the bridge. The room was a good size with a huge LCD TV and was very clean, the bed was huge and was very comfy. We did not eat at the hotel so cannot comment on the food but we did have a drink in the bar area which is very nice. This hotel is in an ideal location for Bristol nightlife and the Cabot shopping centre is just a 10 minute walk away. I will definately stay at this hotel again.

Booked through Late Rooms following a look on Trip-Advisor (don't stay anywhere unless I have checked here first). Arrived on a Friday night at 7pm and was greeted by Michael at the front desk. V helpful and offered me a hot steaming face towel before I started booking in. All very efficient. Offered a room either to the front overlooking the canal and bars - "might be noisy" or one at the front of the hotel which had "limited view but would be quiet"- nice touch. Opted for quiet room and was subsequently upgraded to 6th floor. Check in was painless and event free. Room was fab, great desk, bed and TV as well as all the connections under the sun for the hi tech gizmos. The best gizmo's in the room was the Nespresso coffee machine, certainly beats the normal coffee in a paper tube!!!!! Breakfast was good as was the service. Stayed for meetings during the morning in the lounge and had super service from the staff yet again. Nothing too much trouble. Would definitely stay again and would give this hotel 5* for effort/service and 4* for rooms, etc.

Keep up the good work and I'll be back.

PS: Room rate was £69 via Laterooms

PPS: I spend 3/4 nights per week in hotels and this, for the money, has been the best for a long time.

hot water problems-still?

from freyas_dad
this was my 2nd visit to this hotel, the first being about 5 years ago. i must admit that i chose it because i got a good online deal, and had the holland house offered the same price i would have gone there instead. however, i was glad i did chose the bristol hotel as on the whole i was very happy with the stay. since my last visit the hotel has been thoroughly renovated, i personally liked the little settee in the room, much better than the usual armchair. the bed was comfortable and all in all i found it really pleasant.
breakfast was fine and cooked to order, and again the ambiance was pleasant, with views out onto the waterfront.
now the downside. we were staying prior to getting a morning flight from bristol airport so had to get away fairly early. i rose and showered about 6am, however when my wife went into the bathroom just a short time later there was no hot water whatsoever. we informed reception who told us that they had a problem with the heater during the night-i should have questioned this as i had had no problem just a short time before, and after reading a previous review it does appear that there is some problem here-again we were on floor 5!
we were grateful that the helpful receptionist made a room on the 6th floor available to my wife fairly swiftly after being notified however i am a bit disappointed that this problem does appear not to have been resolved yet, and had we been in more of a rush to get our flight it could have been a hassle.
so, would i stay here again? well yes i would. despite the hiccup with the water i enjoyed the stay, and also the car park which adjoined the hotel was free-overnight at least-something that we had to pay for at the holland house.

Top Local Tips for Bristol

safety & food! We generally felt safe whilest out late at night in Bristol. However, Bristol could do much better for late night takeways in the area where we stayed.

Dynasty overrated The Chinese restaurant Dynasty is overpriced - food is good, but go to the Cathay instead.
