a real mixed bag experience

how to begin? first the staff, most were enthisiastic and tried to be helpful. But they generally lacked the skills to do much of anything. Hopeless really. for example, I asked twice if laundry could be done for me on Saturday "No Problem" was the answer. The hotel guide and the laundry bag charge slip also said the service was available on Saturday. So what happens on Friday night when I tried to drop off laundry at reception?
"Sorry sir! No we don't do laundry on Saturday", the attendant checked with the night manager just to be sure and "Sorry Sir!"...Fine I can deal with that..except that at 7:15 am Saturday morning I got an unwanted wake up call asking if they could come and pick up my laundry..because of course, they do laundry on Saturdays, "Sorry sir!". "Sorry to wake you"

Or how about the Business Center that has a printer that doesn't work?
Or how about the lack of internet service in the bedromms? (other than dial up).
Oh well, you get the picture.

Pleasant Large Hotel

Pleasant large hotel with all the usual ammenities. We were given room 1373, a spacious room with a very nice spacious bathroom with good water pressure. No real view, room's window looked on to another wing of the hotel. Internet facilities seemed to be available via the business centre and there was no evidence of wi-fi. Hotel staff didn't seem to all be of the same standard, some were helpful, others weren't. The hotel buffet breakfast was rather disappointing. Parking was available in the building, but was rather expensive. Hotel is well located, in the centre of town, close to the docks area and close to cafes, bars and restaurants.

A real mixed bag, some lovely staff, some hopeless staff.

It's a really nice building and the room was fine, but it has a few problems.

For example, at breakfast, which is self service, all the staff have to do is seat you at a clean table, and get tea or coffee.

They can't do either of these simple things, so while I cleared old breakfast remnants from one table, my wife had to go in search of someone to get coffee. I know its self service, but this is a bit much! You don't usually have find and clear a table - and this is five star! - I don't think so.

Simple answer - more staff needed at breakfast please!

Also needed to get a conference sign changed - an easy but very important two minute job, which took us four requests of escalating intensity before finally 'someone' did it (but omitted to do the same with the incorrect sign at the car park entrance). It's one of those hotels where staff are clearly not empowered to do anything other than be very polite, smile nicely and say they will get 'someone' or 'a colleague' to 'do it now sir'.

and I have to say that some of the staff were fantastically helpful (thanks Lee) so come on General Manager - empower the rest of them the same way !

Me and my boyfriend stayed there for 1 nite and it was absoulty beautifull.. the service was great and loads of people were very helpfull. i deffently will come back there again

Good pleasent quiet hotel

Late in March 05, I spent Friday and Saturday night at this hotel on a weekend away, birthday celebration with my partner. The staff was very helpful and pleasant, the hotel was quiet and peaceful. Room service was fast. The room was comfortable, very nicely decorated, and the bathroom had an opulent feel to it – gold taps, marble tops, tub bath - which also had a shower. The indoor swimming pool was nice and warm. Meals were very nice, so was the eat as much as you like breakfast!

The hotel is within easy walking distance of so many things to do and see in Bristol.

The down sides were; I had to pay to park my car in the hotel car park, and it would have been nice to have a larger window to look out of. We were on the fourth floor where the windows were smaller than the other floors.

I would go back again.

I stayed here along with many of my friends last Saturday night as we were attending a wedding in the hotel. Staff were completely lovely and genuinely helpful throughout. Even when faced with drunken wedding guests at 3am (and sorry for themselves hungover guests at breakfast at 10am!) staff remained cheery, friendly and efficient.

Beds were really comfortable and breakfast was good. I would definately stay here again.

Good, unexceptional stay - but swearing cleaners!

My one night here in mid December was perfectly comfortable.

Check-in was quick and courteous, and a key card that wouldn't work was immediately replaced with one brought to my room. The room was strangely-shaped (corner room?) but well equipped. While it was not immaculate and a little tired in places, it was basically clean and perfectly comfortable.

The only negatives I can report are loud-ish radio sounds coming from the room below early in the morning and a couple of cleaners talking loudly to one another, swearing in the hall while I waited to get a lift down to Reception.

I would probably stay here again if I wanted to be in the centre of the city - but the traffic congestion and £7/day parking charge makes driving in Bristol a generallly unappealing prospect!

A hotel unloved by its management

There is a nice booklet in your room at the Marriott explaining the long history of the hotel and how £40m was spent restoring it in 1991. It's a shame, therefore, that the current management really does not care about the state of the building or the rooms.

There are lots of nice things about this hotel - the big pool and jacuzzi, the excellent breakfast buffet, the location. However, there is no excuse for (takes a deep breath):

reception having no record of my booking made on the Marriott website, the door handle to the balcony in my suite coming off in my hand, a chunk of wallpaper missing from the wall, a toilet seat that would NOT sit up because the flush handle was directly above the seat (!!), towels in the pool no thicker than a napkin, no satellite TV except the sports channels (do they think this will make us pay for the Pay TV movies?), a queen sized duvet on a king sized bed, a kettle that seemed to date from 1991 and had 13 years of limescale inside, room service delivering a salmon sandwich when the menu says it is a ciabatta ....

And I got all this in just one night! Heaven knows what I would have discovered if I had been here more than 12 hours. And, remember, this all happened in a suite - the standard rooms may well be worse. It is a real shame, as this really could be a great hotel if only it had a bit of love.

My best experience in a Marriott hotel to date!

Pleasantly surprised by the hotel overall. We stayed here in late October for 1 night. The hotel is wonderfully located in the heart of Bristol in a beautiful listed building. Our room was elegant, oversized with period features and high ceilings. The room was tastefully furnished in a traditional English style. The room was spotlessly clean and the room clearly well cared for with no visible signs of wear. The reception were very helpful and car parking very straight forward. Leisure facilities were excellent and the best feature was the restaurant (Michael Caine) which had a wonderful gourmet taster menu. Breakfast was self service and was extensive. My best experience at a Marriott to date.

Top Local Tips for Bristol

Great Base!! The hotel is very close to the Hippodrome Theatre, Bars and shopping. But it is very quiet at night. It is fantastic as a base to explore further afield such as Weston-Super-Mare which has a beautiful beach, Wooky Hole caves and Cheddar Gorge.

Good vibe at Severnshed Went for dinner at Severnshed restaurant (about 5-10 minute walk from hotel). Good buzz about the place with decent 'dance' music playing in background. Bar and restaurant areas.

Commonwealth & Empire Museum Interesting museum that looks at British/English history from a number of perspectives. Excellent exhibition on the Slave Trade as well as the Empire
