What a GREAT hotel !!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My boyfriend booked this hotel for a special weekend away. As soon as we walked through the door we just loved the place. The Bar/reception was extremely stylish and we knew we were in for a real treat. Our room was lovely (see the photos left by another reviewer). The bed was the most comfortable I've ever slept in & the sheets were very very soft ...in fact we even searched for the label on the sheets so we could buy some ...yes they were that nice !!! The Bath was pure heaven !!!!! .... we went out and got some bubble bath & wine & then could full advantage of it ...There was plenty of room for two !!!! The only slight negatives was the noise of traffic outside meant it was best to keep the windows closed and the lack of storage space but as we only stayed 1 night this wasn't at all a problem. We stayed at the Grand the night before and there is truly no comparison with drakes !!!!

Such a pity...it could have been great

Very impressive entrance and reception/bar area. We had a room in the attic with a balcony over looking the pier. First impressions were good but then all the silly and avoidable problems were spotted. There is a lack of storage, we planned to put the suitcase under the bed but the space under the bed was all ready in use - storing items from other rooms! The room lacked that final sparkle - dirty windows, small flies in the room, cigarette butts on the balcony, carpet dusty and stained, and dust hanging from the air vents. We asked for the room to be cleaned - they promised a deep clean the next day. It did not happen until we complained again. The room was then cleaned and they apologised with a bottle of champagne. The tea and coffee making facilities are great - but no where to plug in the kettle. There is also no fridge or mini bar.
We ate at the basement restuarant - food was good but an uncomfortable meal as air conditioning was not working.
Room service was erratic - we were on the top floor with no lift. We had guests in our room one evening and bar staff refused to bring drinks to the room - saying they were too busy or alone in the bar - a blatent lie I discovered when I went down to the bar myself.
I like good hotels and I am happy to pay £200 a night for a well located, well designed and well run hotels - this hotel failed to meet these criteria. Some of the staff were really friendly but this does not get over the poor design aspects and the lack of proper cleaning. Next time it is the Hotel du Vin for us

Much to commend it, but...........

My boyfriend and I have just spent a night at Drakes - a last minute booking for a quick trip to Brighton. Overall, the hotel was very good and certainly above average - not entirely surprising as it is also more expensive than average. The staff were all friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome and comfortable. The decor is lovely - tranquil, quirky and modern. The room was very pleasant although it was a bit small and had frosted windows (despite being called a city view room) which was a bit claustrophobic. The bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept in, a real treat. Storage space in the room was limited and there was no coffee table but it was nice.

There are a few areas that could do with improvement. Most notably, the restaurant situation. It is very popular with non residents and gets booked up. Consequently, we had to dine at an alternative place on the evening of our stay as there were no tables available. It's the first time I've stayed in a hotel that couldn't feed me! Parking in Brighton is pretty dire and this hotel is no exception. They only have space for 4 cars. As an alternative, you are advised that free parking is available at the marina and that the hotel can send a taxi for you - the snag is that you have to pay for it. (Incidentally, I believe that if you do get parked in the small car park, the hotel takes a nightly fee. So unless you arrive on foot, there will be a hidden charge......).

In summary, the hotel is very comfortable. The food (when you can get it) is very nice indeed. The service, whilst bound by the limitations of the hotel, is excellent. The value for money is a little less impressive. I suspect if we had been placed in a sea view room, we would have felt more positive. It hasn't put us off and we would stay again, but next time we will book ahead to ensure a sea view, dinner, and probably an upgrade.

One of my favourite hotel visits- EVER

from MSW2
I just had to write something on here to let you know how fantastic this hotel is ! From their website you know its gonna be special, but its not until you arrive that you realise how special a stay this will be.

Everything about this hotel is personal, from the reception area that doubles up as a bar, to the friendly staff that you get to know.

We stayed in a Bijou room and it was perfect, so beautiful. The rooms main feature is a huge bath sat by the window (just to let you know as this room is at the back it has no view the windows are frosted but believe me it doesn't matter when you have a room as beautiful as this ur not interested at outside). The Gorgeous flat screen TV and DVD player were great especially when you can borrow dvds from reception. The room comes with a small wet room perfectly equipped beautifully done, like evrything in this hotel.

We made full use of the hotels room service and contrary to other peoples comments found it to be superb. We ordered a light snack, which was gorgeous, and in the morning had breakfast in bed which was also delicious.

We ate at the hotels, Gingerman restaurant. The price for a three course meal is £30 or £25 for two, we thought this was a great price seeing as though the food is of such a high standard.

All in all a perfect short break, we didn't want to leave the hotel!

My first choice in Brighton

from LTJ874
I spent a weekend here in July 2005, and I will definitely be returning to this hotel next time I visit Brighton.

I stayed in a City View room. The room was furnished to a high standard with a comfortable bed, good lighting, DVD player and a LCD TV. The bathroom was equally impressive. On a separate level to the main room, the bathroom was bright, clean, and had good quality fittings. Breakfast and dinner in the Gingerman restaurant was fantastic. All the staff were helpful and friendly.

That said, there were some gripes. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is limited hanging space. There was no wardrobe in my room, only hangers on two hooks behind a motorised curtain. I was surprised that there was no clock radio in the room. Also, there was a large pile of towels in the bathroom, but no towel rail on which to hang them. These are things that would not put me off staying here again, but I hope the hotel these comments on board.

NO room service!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
After staying at this hotel I was at first reluctant to leave a bad review as it really is a beautiful hotel HOWEVER on the second night of our stay we were told by the one member of staff on duty, that he was too busy to deliver room service, so after going to the bar were astonished to be told that he if not know how to make the a 'Pimms and Lemonade'. Furthermore after contacting the manger 3 times we received a rather pathetic response blaming his staff as one person called in Sick. For a hotel of this supposed calibre, I was appalled by the service and after the mangers response, despite his request of not letting this deter us from further visits, it certainly will !

Superb, excellent, perfect.

My partner and i stayed in one of the circular rooms on the first floor which was great in every way apart from perhaps a little too much traffic noise. However, the bath by the floor to ceiling windows and waking up to a wonderful seaview made up for it. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It is the perfect place to go for a romantic relaxed stay. We also had dinner at the Gingerman which was superb.
Excellent all round. Will definitely be going back.

The best hotel in Brighton!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The girlfriend and I have been travelling to Brighton avidly for a couple of years now and what a find the drakes hotel is...

We've got our favourites in Brighton and with stayed in most of the finer hotels but drakes is something else. As well as receiving an endearing call from a member of their team before we arrived at the hotel, they totally went out of their way to make this special occasion extra special.

One of Brightons finest restaurants in the Gingerman, the cocktail bar provided some of the best drinks I have tasted (thanks Baz) and then after that drakes even arranged for us to enter the exclusive Koba... a late night members only, hidden away gem in Brighton.

Its definitely the place to be and my new second home. I hope everyones enjoys it as much as we did.

A disappointing night

from broome57
I recently stayed in one of the first floor feature rooms for a romantic night with my wife. The view from the room was beautiful, a great look out to the pier and there is no doubt the staff were friendly and efficient. But we were both extremely surprised by how noisey the road was. We both love sash windows but a little double glazing wouldnt have gone amiss, not sure how happy Brighton council would have been with this! Paying 300 pounds to be treated to a restless night is not really all that great, and I think for the money you would be better off getting a suite at the Hotel Du Vin.

Stylish boutique

from ClaireBrighton
Stayed for Valentines at Drakes. We had a seafront room with a roll top bath looking out over the Pier. The room design blew me away, as did the attention to detail with the linen, toiletries etc. We ate downstairs at the Gingerman which I loved. I know Brighton restaurants well, and this is one of the best using in season, local ingredients.
There was some renovation work going on in the reception which was a shame, but this means that the area is probably even more stylish now. The room had a DVD/CD player but disappointingly there was very little choice of music or films in the reception, but this is a minor gripe.
This is what a boutique hotel should be about, friendly staff, fantastic location and wonderful rooms. I'd advise you to leave the car at home if you can as parking in Brighton is a nightmare, and a car is unecessary in the city. Then you can really relax and enjoy!

Top Local Tips for Brighton

Don't Miss the Pavillion! It is simply unique and amazing. Take a guided tour if you can as it is very informative.

Lunch at the Grand Lunch at the Grand is superb. A proper English hotel with superb food - on Sunday it's only £25 a head.

Veggie Grand Dining Give the vegetarian restaurant Terre a Terre a go. If you can get a table, it's well worth a trip
