The best hotel in Brighton. Friendly, great breakfast, comfortable rooms and wouldn't go anywhere else.

We spent Easter Sunday at the Cavalaire Hotel and had a great time. The hotel is in a fantastic location and is beautifully decorated. The breakfast was delicious, and the service was friendly and very efficient. Derek went out of his way to help us, and we will definitely be back.

I stayed at Brighton for the weekend at the Cavalaire Hotel in Brighton. It was my first visit to Brighton and the staff at the hotel made me feel very welcome. The hotel was extremely clean and value for money. It has an excellent location. The breakfast was lovely and there was even plenty of choice for vegetarians. The Cavalaire hotel really made my visit to Brighton enjoyable.

A Jekyll and Hyde experience...

The Cavalaire is a very clean and tidy hotel in a convenient location. They were very obliging when I called up and they fitted us in at the last minute. The breakfasts are good - cooked to order using good quality ingredients. On the negative side, the bedroom we stayed in had a tiny capsule loo/shower/sink unit. So tiny that you can't sit on the loo and shut the door - your knees get in the way.

The only other issue we had was that only one of the owners should be in a customer facing role: One was very friendly and welcoming, the other was about as grumpy as he could have been. He was stroppy when we asked for a parking voucher and had a funny turn over us using the internet in the customers' lounge... Not exactly welcoming.

When we go to Brighton we always try to stay at The White House (it's listed under bed and breakfasts here) but sadly they were full. I'll book earlier next time...

excellent cavalaire

Have just spent the weekend in Brighton for my 40th birthday. Stayed at the Cavalaire Hotel, Upper Rock Gardens, Brighton. The hotel is beautiful. A stones throw from the excellent shops and restaurants. The owners, Derek and Garry, are lovely. We were late arriving the first night, (very late), as we got extremely lost in the dark. I didn't have their number with me to let them know, however, Derek rang me, told me not to worry, to drive carefully and that he would be waiting for us to arrive safely. We had totally inconvenienced them as we were due to arrive much earlier and they had made arrangements to go out. They were very understanding and not at all annoyed, they were lovely. When we arrived we were made to feel very welcome straight away, there was a gorgeous, cosy, open fire blazing away. The hotel is amazingly clean, very well decorated and beautifully furnished. The bedroom was spacious, even though there were four of us in one room. The bedding was crisp and clean. The quilts and pillows are to die for. The hotel is quiet, there was no noise from residents or people in the street, except the odd huge, noisy seagull!! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be going back in the not too distant future. My children loved it so much they wanted to stay longer. Derek was very accommodating of my 10 year old son who is a fussy eater, and he really enjoyed the food, which is very rare. There is no combination of breakfast that is too much trouble for Derek and Garry, there is an abundance of cereal, fruit and yoghurts, orange juice and coffee/tea. There are lovely toiletries in the bedroom and plenty of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. To anyone who is thinking of staying in Brighton I would thoroughly recommend this excellent hotel.

Really nice hotel.
The owners are so friendly and helpful. Great location near bars and shops of Kemp Town and only a short walk in to the centre. Will definitely be staying here again.

Everything was fantastic

We stayed here for a long weekend, we both agreed that it is the best accomodation that we have stayed in. The location is good, it is a few minutes walking distance to beach/pier/pubs/clubs/restaurants and a short taxi ride to train station. The room we stayed in was nice, clean and cosy. The bathroom was very small but everything else made up for that. There was a wide choice of breakfasts, inc vegetarian, full english and continental, and those little bio-yoghurt things. The owners really went out of their way to be accomodating and helpful, as well as flexible to fit in with our plans in terms of checking in/out. For the service we recieved I would have expected to pay a lot more. We will definitely stay here again :D

Fantastic Hotel

I have just returned from an excellent mid-week break at the Cavaliere Hotel, Brighton. I am already loking forward to a return visit due to the high standard of not only the accomodation it's self but also the service and especially the substantial breakfast. The rooms were very well presented, warm and cosy. The hospitality of the proprietors Garry and Derek was second to none offering help and guidance when required which added to the enjoyment of my stay in Brighton. Breakfast time was a delight with the extensive and delicious choices of food on offer. The hotel is nicely located in relation to the Pier and the many Kemp Town restaurants and brasseries. A suberb hotel!

Unfriendly, rude and unhelpful

We were due to stay at the Cavalaire last weekend, booked largely as a result of the reviews on this site. I knew we were going to arrive late on the Friday so I rang in the morning to check it was ok. I spoke to one of the owners and explained that we should be there by 10.30pm. He said this was fine and even joked that he couldn't guarantee what state he would be in as he might have had a glass of wine!

The traffic was bad leaving London and I thought we might be 10/15 minutes late so I rang them again to let them know. I was astonished with the response I got. They asked me if I really expected them to wait up for us and then cook us breakfast in the morning! I spoke to both owners and they were both rude, unfriendly and sarcastic. They said that arrivals after 8pm weren't strictly permitted and I pointed out that we didn't want to inconvenience them but that I had already cleared our late arrival with them. They then said that they thought it would take us longer than we expected to arrive and that if we weren't there by 11pm they would lock the door and we would have to find somewhere else to stay but that they would refund the deposit. Given their attitude we decided it was the last place we wanted to stay so we did book somewhere else and rang them to cancel. They then informed us that we couldn't in fact cancel and that they would charge us for the whole weekend regardless of their earlier comments. I was shocked at how they went back on what they had said over the phone.

We were expecting a friendly and charming welcome, this couldn't have been further from the truth. I accept this is not a large hotel and so doesn't cater for people's demands 24/7 but when they charge £95 a night and you make prior arrangements you do not expect to be treated like this.

Poor customer service

I went to book a twin room over the phone which was available. I then asked if it is ok to bring a 3month old baby and this is where the guy's attitude changed. Exact words = you want to book a twin room and then you turn up with a third person, goodbye' and he put the phone down. I was shocked by this level of service from a business. If he would have let me finish he would have known that the other single bed was for my baby. As a potential customer I felt discriminated against for having a baby.

Stunning personal service

I stayed at the Cavalaire for a week at the beginning of April this year. The rooms are very well presented, clean and modern and the owners are friendly and helpful. The only minor drawback was that the "wetroom" style showerroom/toilet was tiny, but to be fair this is a townhouse hotel and not a Thistle! If you want standard business fare then go to the Hilton, if you want a 5* environment then go to Drakes, otherwise pick the Cavalaire: it has character, style, a liberal atmosphere and a dog called Buffy.
The breakfast is as advertised: absolutely fantastic! I have to say that it was as good as the breakfast served at the Hilton with added flexibility (I was able to request any variation I liked) and even better service. This is from someone who loves the Hilton.
On one evening I decided to stay in with a takeaway and was recommended a Chinese around the corner. When I returned with my food a beautifully presented tray had been prepared for me, including a complimentary glass of wine - I hadn't even asked. Lovely, lovely people.
This is a good hotel made excellent by the willingness of the owners to bend over backwards to make your stay comfortable, special and fun.

Top Local Tips for Brighton

Brilliant Nightlife Brighton nightlife is like no where else you will ever go. The Gay Clubs and bars are really unique to Brighton and are really friendly, you do not have to be gay to go into any of the bars all are welcome to go along and have a fabulous night out;( please note though not many will accomodate Hen nights.) If you get a chance to see any of the Drag Queen acts it's well worth it. The Beaches are pebble and are kept in very good condition there is no litter any where as is the same for the sea front, Brighton Pier is the best i have seen and it's free to enter, there are bars, food, shops and amusuments all the way to the end. The Brighton Pride is also an event not to be missed, it' very busy that weekend and most Hotels are only doing 3 night deals, you also have to book up early in the year as well to make sure you get your room whatever hotel you choose.

The Mock Turtle Old fashioned tea. Fantastic homemade cakes & mismatched china. But, what a lovely retreat away from the hustle & bustle of Brighton.

Havana We've had four excellent and very enjoyable meals at Havana. Good service, good food. The mellow live jazz has been appreciated too.
