Not a four star hotel the room was poorly decorated whilst it did try! Windows were filty and the walls were damp needed a complete re-vamp. I would say this hotel is more 2 star. So take note.

Great room and location - awful attitude

Stayed for 2 nights in march. Pleasantly surprised by size of room and bed overlooking sea (weather was great). Good car parking service (but costly). The attitude of the person running the restaurant though secured this rating for them. I asked to be seated away from the bar area. They were 'very busy' that night even though I arrived at 8.00pm , there were heaps of tables available and no one entered the restaurant after me. I ended up next to the door, in a draft with the noise filtering through from the bar. The food was dreadful - congratulations for producing the worst chicken season salad possible - I felt sorry for the chicken who had died to end up on a dish like this. And over £8 for a single glass of wine was ludicrous. Sort out the people running this place - apart from the garage guys who were excellent.

We've just stayed at this hotel and would not return. The public areas are characterful but our room was truly horrendous, particularly given the £120 per night price tag. Our sea-view room was cramped and in desperate need of redecoration. The bathroom was barely functional - the powerful shower was its only redeeming feature. The worst part of our stay was the unbelievable amount of noise at night. We spent two sleepless nights at the hotel. Three things conspired to keep us awake. The first was the noise from other guests. The walls of this hotel are paper thin. The second was constantly creaking floorboards - I've never heard so much noise from floorboards. The third, and by far the loudest, was the hordes of clubbers, taxis and street cleaners that frequent the seafront, which turns into party central at night. The noise starts about mid-night and goes on until at least 4am. All in all my advice is go elsewhere.

stayed at this hotel last august bank hoilday and booked 2 twin rooms.
this hotels foyer was passable but do not think it has seen a duster for years! the hotel rooms were very very poor complete with torn quilt covers, black net curtains , which were one day white! and boby hairs in the shower! when i complained we were moved to two other rooms which were even worse , if it had not been a bank holiday we would have moved to another hotel. even after complaining to the paramount group whom own the hotel on our return we did not get a reasonable response. avoid this hotel at all costs.

Talk about trading on your reputation! I'm sure in the old days this was a glamorous place to stay, but my recent stay there was a big disappointment.As other reviewers say, this is overpriced. I booked the hotel for my husband's birthday and didn't mind paying extra for what I thought would be a special room. But I could have stayed in a bed and breakfast for half the price I paid, and got a bigger, better room. And a fresher breakfast!If anyone is booking this hotel in person, I would really recommend you ask to see the room before paying. I left feeling really conned and I'll never go back.

This is the first time i have stayed at the old ship. Me and my wife stayed over at the weekend, it is the most welcoming hotel that i have stayed, the night staff are relaxed for the busy time that they worked.
Trish the night porter is a very funny old lady, and on reception is a guy called ben, he was such a nice guy that helped us with any question!! I have told my friends and family to go for the weekend, WELL DONE THE OLD SHIP HOTEL. top marks!!

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Old Ship for a weekend in January. The room we were given was in a smelly corridor towards the back of the building and was stuffy and stank of cigarrette smoke. It had no main light, only a couple of lamps. The bathroom was quite small but the shower was pretty good. Reception were helpful in advising us on resturants to eat out in. We have stayed here a couple of times and enjoyed it but I do feel that this hotel is over-priced - reception and the bar area are very nice but the rooms leave a lot to be desired.

We were checked into the hotel efficiently, and given a room on the first floor (112). It must've been one of the rooms mentioned by previous reviewers, as the decoration was old and tatty. Unfortunately, there was no hot water, and the shower head was covered in mildew.
Within 5 minutes of calling down to reception, we were moved to another room on the first floor (121) which was much better. It had been recent renovated, and the decorations were new. Although it was at the front of the hotel, we hardly heard a thing during our 2 night stay as double-glazing had been installed. This hotel wouldn't be top on our list of places to stay, as the reception staff can be a bit abrupt at times, but I wouldn't avoid it like the plague.

Even though my boss paid for this hotel for our work Christmas party, I wanted to get a refund for him! We checked out at 7.00 a.m. and had to cancel our breakfast due to huge lorries outside digging up the road at 6.30 and had not been warned of them at all. The refurb money obviously went on the bar and reception area, as the rooms still had 1950's wallpaper peeling off, and no double glazing to drown out noises from outside! Definately more 2 star than 4 star. I was pissed off enough with the hotel and I wasn't even paying!! It was so nice to leave.
However the car parking attendant was very sweet and so was the lady who at 2 a.m. made us Turkey and cranberry sandwiches.

I had prebooked this hotel, and then found this review site, thought that I was in for a rough stay, however....although the hotel is undergoing some renovation, and there is some sign of overdue work in the room, such as tatty tiling and flaking paint, I could not really fault it. The beds are comfortable, excellent staff and food. Drinks are expensive though and parking is dire! It is nearby to the lanes and seafront and is a most excellent location. I would recommend it.

The recent reviews are accurate. This is not a 4* hotel, sorry. It does not compare with any good 4* hotels I have stayed at, and I stay in a lot of hotels for business travel. They say they have spent £3 million on a refurb, but where exactly? It is overpriced, no doubt about that.
Brighton has many hotels, so choose another, you will get better value for your money. On my next visit I will NOT be staying at the Old Ship.

Over Priced

I stayed in the Old Ship over my birthday weekend. I booked a suite for the weekend which cost £200 per night. When I turned up to the hotel the entire building had scafolding outside, there goes the sea-view room I thought. The reception and layout downstairs was well done and worthy of a 4* rating, however, the suite was not. The windows were rotting and the bathroom had a loose tap and tiles falling off the walls. The room did not even include a fridge or dressing gowns. For £400 for the weekend I expected more. Our request for breakfast in our room, by means of the card left outside the door, was ignored on both sat and sunday morning and I had to call reception to request it. To be frank for the same price you can stay next door at the Thistle Hotel, do it.

Terrible attitude to customers

They were more than happy to book us into a room with a sea view (at an extra £16 per day charge for the view), but when we arrived we found that the view outside the window was completely obscured by scaffolding. When we complained we were refused a refund because "we have had no other complaints".Please, listen to these bad reviews. I initially thought that they may be written by the occasional person who had an unfortunate experience but I am now convinced that it is overall bad service from a hotel that does not care about it's customers in any way.

Top Local Tips for Brighton

Eating out Brighton has cusine of all types all prices and all degrees of comfort. Look for places while out during the day and book your favourite especailly at peak times.

Don't go to chain pubs Brighton has some great pubs (independent ones that is) and the crowds can be trendy/indie. You will see some tacky tourists frequenting the chain pubs and look like they stepped out of a stereotypical hen party night out (aka chav). But if you seek out the cooler pubs you'll meet nice people, hear good music and enjoy your evening. ALSO, there are some cool independent retail shops (clothing, records/cds) and some nice sweet shops (nice chocolate fudges that are homemade).

Booking a saturday night only in Brighton It is very difficult to book one night's accomodation on a Saturday night and will probably work out cheaper to book 2 nights as the only hotels allowing you to stay for one night are the more expensive ones. I have stayed in The Old Ship which cost £160 and the Thistle which was around £200.
