Totally unfriendly

I wouldn't normally provide negative feedback on bad experiences but this was so utterly appalling that I feel compelled to help others to avoid the same trap as me. Firstly, Widbrook Grange is not a family-oriented hotel; children are tolerated but not welcomed. However, the real damage is done in the shockingly mis-leading approach of their pricing policy. Briefly, I booked a one-night stay for dinner, B&B for five people - two adults and three children aged one, three and five. I was told that the family room was taken but we could be accommodated in the same way by using two almost adjoining double rooms. Fine. I was therefore shocked to be presented with a bill on departure for over £400 when the official rate for the family room for five was supposed to be £190. Worse, I had to pay a SUPPLEMENT for my one year old daughter's dinner of £20!!! Apparently I was supposed to realise that dinner B&B for five people doesn't really mean that, but instead means that I am "supposed to bring the food for the baby myself"!!! Incredible. Anyway, the owner clearly has limited understanding of customer service and was so defensive and belligerent on our departure that I couldn't leave fast enough. Needless to say he took absolutely no interest in resolving the issues. The owners should also be more careful where and when they choose to have a blisteringly offensive and personal row with each other about temporary staffing and other things. Doing so in the reception area with liberal use of poor language in front of my wife and other guests is, like their deliberately mis-leading pricing approach, hardly likely to create a good impression or a loyal customer base. It is also outrageous to do so in a supposedly family-friendly establishment. Never again.

Perfect for a Getaway weekend

from user.dat
My wife and I stayed at the Widbrook Grange at the end of March 2007 for a 10th Wedding Anniversary getaway.

We booked online through the visit Bath website, but due to a problem
with the site being up to date with room availability, we were phoned
the next day to advise that the room we had booked (4 poster) was unavailable, but they had a double room that was available, so we accepted that, and the hotel promised us a complementary bottle of wine.

I would advise to book direct with the hotel to ensure getting the correct info.

The room that we had was in the main house (George Elliot Room) and was clean, bright & airy, The decor & furniture was in keeping with the period of the building, the bed was v comfy and the en suite was clean & the hot water (V Hot) was in plentiful supply.

Food in the restaurant was fantastic, we had drinks from the extensive drinks menu before the meal, then had main courses & desserts. The food was cooked to perfection and was delicious - worthy of the awards that the place has received.

The breakfasts were also of a similar standard, good sized portions of good quality food.

The staff were v friendly & helpful throughout our stay.

We didn't try out the pool, so I can't comment on this facility.

not child friendly

from KathUK77
We stayed at Widbrook Grange for a family weekend. It was a lovely location and the hotel is set in beautiful grounds. We booked for a large family group and were told that the hotel was child friendly and that a room with toys would be available for the children to play in. With 4 young children in the group this sounded ideal. However on arrival the room was locked and we did not gain access until the last night of our stay. There were no toys only some DVD's and a DVD player that didn't work (luckily we fixed it ourselves).

During dinner we were asked to keep the children quiet and in their seats as we were told they were disturbing other guests. We had 4 children under 6 so this was quite difficult.

The swimming pool was great and the children and adults loved it, without this there was nothing else for the children to do.

Food was also very good, particularly the breakfast.

On booking we had informed the hotel owner that we were a large party and that we were planning a surprise party for a family member. This was all agreed and we were told that their hotel could cater for this. However when we actually had the party the hotel owner came and told us that we had to end it and be in our rooms at 12.00 as we would disturb other guests. We found her manner extremely rude.

The hotel has 2 lounge rooms were you can sit and watch TV or have a drink, however their is no actual bar area. Drinks are served from reception and they stop serving at 11pm. We were told that this wouldn't be a problem as we could have as many drinks as we liked at 11pm and could sit in the lounge. The hotel owner complained that we were too noisy sitting in the lounge.

Most of the rooms were lovely, if a little old fashioned but some did not have hot water. Those that did, had very hot water, so beware if you have children, it was boiling coming out of some of the taps. It was also a bit smelly, due I believe, to puppies being kept in the main hotel building.

If you are looking for a quiet retreat this hotel is ok, however if you have children I would not recommend Widbrook grange. I will not be visiting again as they did not deliver what they agreed. They should never have told us that they were child friendly.

Disappointed

Disappointing. Furniture old, some damage. Showers electric and either a dribble and hot or slow and cold. Puppies in the main house rather smelly!!!!

Great place for a relaxing stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
A wonderful setting for our Silver Wedding stay. Wonderful grounds with deck chairs, benches around a pond etc. Room (Jane Austen No.3) was spacious with two sitting chairs and a wonderfully comfortable 4 poster bed.
Walks from the hotel into Bradford on Avon is about 20 mins on the canal towpath (1/2 mile up the road).
The food must be good, the owners liveon site and ate inm the restraunt on Friday- breakfasts are good enough to set you up for the day !

They had staffing problems on the Sunday morning and the breakfast did not go wonderfully well but it was sorted eventually (how often would a hotel be able to persuade a duty manager and a kitchen hand to muck in to take breakfast orders - must be good staff!)

Well recommended expect to pay about £400 - £450 for two nights for a couple including Bed and Breakfast with meals and drinks in the Hotel.

Family friendly?

from A TripAdvisor Member
It's a lovely hotel in lots of ways - very comfortable family room, delightful swimming pool, largely friendly staff, good (but expensive) food - and it's all set in lovely grounds.

But it's not terribly family friendly (our children are 9 and 5). Although they loved the pool, there's not really enough changing room space (because the pool is shared with gym club users who aren't always delighted to see kids taking up the space) and while the kids menu is good (no junk), there's a minimum cost of £10 which is really steep for a little child. Also the tv was turned off while my son was in the middle of watching it, (no apology or comment made) and we were hussled out of the lounge to make way for the saturday night diners. During dinner my children were asked to stay sat in their seats on the grounds that it was 'not a nursery' although they were playing sensibly, on the floor, tucked out of the way of any staff or diners. After some argy bargy the hotel owner, to his credit, did allow them to continue playing.

But all in all, my feeling is the hotel while trying to be all thing to all men (a fine dining restaurant, a family hotel, and a gym) doesn't quite succeed in fulfilling all criteria.

So we had a good time, but we won't return because I didn't feel the children were made welcome.

A quiet place to stay

from rincewindforever
Clean and comfortable rooms with a literacy theme complete with the relevant book. Food superb and the chef really friendly and willing to share a recipe. Swimming pleasant and quiet while we were there. A relaxing stay.

Hotel Cancellation Policy

from Holloway156
Check carefully the cancellation policy at this establishment. We cancelled one out of five rooms on a week-end at the last minute due to illness, and the owner was totally inflexible, charged us full rate on the cancelled room for two nights and was quite rude to us when we tried to discuss it with him.

Also we were having a small birthday party one evening, and we were all told to advise our choice of full dinner menu a couple of weeks prior to arrival at the hotel. This seemed out of line for a hotel that has been awarded the English Tourism Council and AA 5 Diamond top quality rating.

Overall nothing special. We would not stay there again.

Great Hotel, and Food!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed there for 2wks on business and found the facility to be way above average class, especially the food. The food alone can be one of the best in town!! Room also was clean, spacious and comfort.

But since I was on business for the whole stay it was somewhat critical not being able to use the internet connection despite they have the wireless broadband device on the premise. If I could have, it would have been one of the best hotels in my experience though.

Great hotel, but make sure you get to breakfast on time!

from Hertsgirl2
Lovely hotel, great food and swimming pool. We stayed in one of the outbuildings which could do with a bit of a makeover (I don't like carpet in bathrooms) and one weekday morning, we came to get breakfast at 9AM and were told the chef had stopped cooking!

Lovely Romantic Hotel

from Boycey
What a fantastic find! A gorgeous old building, lovely atmosphere, and a truly outstanding restaurant. We had a wonderful romantic weekend, exploring the old town and relaxing in the hotel garden over a glass of wine.

We'll definitely be back to use the swimming pool next time!

Top Local Tips for Bradford on avon

What to do in Bradford? Make sure you pay and display, warden was putting tickets on every other car when we visited. Not that there is much there really so maybe miss it out and go to Bath (and sit in a queue to park!)

Central to lots of historical and other attractions If you want to avoid the centre of towns like Bath but want to visit lots of attractions like Longleat this might be the place for you

Great for cycling Widbrook Grange is very well placed for cycling on the local canal tow path. It is general flat and easy to ride on. The hotel is less than 2 minute's ride away.
