Do not stay at this hotel

from GeoDevon
I requested a quiet room and was given a room directly above reception, which was one of the smallest and noisiest room I have ever stayed in. I was woken up at 6 each morning with staff arriving and you could hear every word they said in reception.

When I went to make myself a cup of tea in my room, the cups were filthy, covered in dust and hair.

In the morning there was no hot water in my room, so I had to get dressed, go out of the building to another room to have a shower.

Then to top it all. Breakfast is served from 7 to 9, but on that morning, they were only serving until 8.15, as they had a conference which was starting at 9. Sorry we were all such an inconvenience.

I stay in hotels evry week of the year and this is one of the dirtiest, amateurish and over priced ( in terms of value for money ) that i have stayed at.

It has pretentions to be good, but lacks in quality at all levels.

Oops forgot to say that on the hotel landings there seemed to be lots of old clutter, such as dirty curtains, just left sitting there !! Not exactly what it shows on the website.

I think the reviewer is being a little unfair.
The guest in question booked the last room we had available, that night and is indeed the smallest room we have although it is a double. It is also the cheapest. The first member of staff arrives at 6.45am and the receptionist arrives about 7.30am. We have 5 Diamonds awarded to us by the VisitBritain Tourist Board and they are very strict on cleanliness. Unless someone tells us at the time there is nothing we can do about an alleged dirty cup and saucer. The heating had broken on the first morning of the guest's stay and we had to offer him a different room to shower in as the plumber had not yet arrived. All the other guests had hot water apart from this particular one. We did have a conference on the first morning and we shortened the breakfast service. We were also decorating one of the rooms and the decorators forgot to tidy up the curtains they had removed from the room and they were left on the landing near the guest's room.

Over played Hotel - Proprietor huge ego

Did not enjoy our stay at this Hotel one bit - be warned
Management Response from rapidoBradfordonAvon
A little difficult to respond to such a brief review but It's probably the nicest thing anyone has said about me!
A small hotel is generally all about the personality of the proprietor and what he brings to it. Obviously the gentleman concerned took a bit of a dislike to me!
On the subject of the barn conversion being small: we are only allowed to refer to a room as a double if it exceeds a certain size. All the rooms are pictured on my website. We are regulated by the AA, Visit Britain and Johansens.
The other tip for people wanting a larger room is took ask for one. Generally, the more you pay, the larger the room. This is the case in my lovely hotel. The suites are particularly big, have a lounge area and superking size beds, and strangely are the most expensive.
Thank you again for commenting on my huge ego, it's made my day.
PS. Having checked our records, I can find no-one with the name Doved who stayed in August 2006. I hope it's not someone having a joke at my ego's expense

A delightful hotel

from FrancescaWooldridge
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed a weekend break at this hotel. Despite the weather (which was dreadful), the hotel really did make up for it. Service was excellent and the food in the dining room was first class - a great menu.
Our room - the Dovecote Suite - had a four-poster bed which was lovely and the antiques and paintings that seem to occupy every corner of the hotel, really add to the ambiance of the place.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anybody looking to take a break. We really look forward to going back!

from RoseandThistle
We booked the hotel at the last minute so didn't see any reviews until afterwards. We found it a big disappointment. They give their address as being Bradford-on-Avon yet they are outside Trowbridge, on a busy road. They bill themselves as a small country house hotel, with their publicity showing a lovely old Georgian building. However as far as we could tell the lovely old building appears to be for the staff/ owners only. The public rooms (lounge, dining room) and the bedrooms are in modern conversions/ extensions at the side and back, disconnected from the "old manor" and pretty garden. Our first experience as we arrived at the hotel was the service entrance, curiously placed by reception and in front of the customer car park, with kitchen staff loitering outside. Fine for them, but doesn't create a very nice ambience. We stayed for dinner and the food was terrible - ingredients were fine but the recipes clearly far too amibitious for the skills of the chef. They would have been much better off serving simpler food, using the same ingredients.

Dear Tripadvisor,
I will address their comments below.
1.This response has been written to conform to the rules set out by Tripadvisor.
2.Our address is Bradford on Avon and we are between Bradford and Trowbridge. We are in the countryside between the two. The road is very quiet. It is a country house hotel and farm. There are 4 guest rooms in the main house and I occupy one other. The house and garden are open to all guests. I am very proud of the garden and have won a local competition for the best hotel garden for the 3rd year running. I like to share this with my guests. The trophy is prominently displayed in reception. The rest of my rooms are indeed in converted farm buildings as is usual with properties like mine. I try hard to make this clear in my publicity material and website. I have just received planning permission to landscape the back of the building (this is mentioned on the first page of my website)and we are moving the reception to the front door of the main house which will give a far greater sense of arrival. The AA mentioned this at their last inspection and I was happy to oblige.
3.The question of food is difficult as nothing was said at the time. What we do find is that if someone is unhappy with one aspect of their stay then we get condemned for everything. The food we serve is quite simple local fare and the comments are generally excellent.
I am very proud of what I do here and take genuine complaints very seriously. One point lost on most people is that if we do not receive a complaint at the time it is almost impossible to rectify and it tends to fester.
4. If the guest in question would care to contact me I would like to offer him a complimentary weekend stay to demonstrate our improvements. By the way, we do know who it is!

Lovely, old building, beautiful and charming

from boogiecat
I was horribly sick by this point in my trip, but the soft bed, beautiful room with the heavy beams overhead made my illness as pleasant as it could possibly be when sick on a much anticipated vacation. I loved the character and history of this place. Of the six
different places that I stayed while in the UK this was by far my favorite!

Excellent wedding venue

from andyandsandra
On July the 28th 2007 we got married in a local church and held our wedding reception at The Old Manor hotel. The hotel was hired out for our exclusive so with 19 rooms this allowed for both family and friends to stay. The food in both the afternoon and evening was first class and service was excellent. From the time of arrival with the canap├ęs to the breakfast the next morning everything ran like clock work. This was thanks to the great effort from all the staff and especially the hotel owner Tim. All our family and friend said how the hotel had made our wedding day very special. Andrew and Sandra Wiltshire.

dissapointed will not bother returning

from chuchillmovers
I felt that after finding this website I had to write a review: my husband and I stayed at this hotel many years ago(16!) when the original couple owned it, and they restored it and added new features, it was great then! however they left , we returned last year as a surprise from my husband, and he asked for the original room we had for our honeymoon, the trowle suite, when we arrived the male owner said he did not recall him asking for that exact room- anyway we had to settle for another room- staff unfriendly, even on our return my husband contacted the hotel but he denied the conversation and booking! very unprofessional, I wish the original couple were still there as they really cared! will not bother to return to that hotel- I am sure I will find a better one and service in that area as it is a beautiful part of the country.
Management Response from rapidoBradfordonAvon
This is a comment from last year but I do remember the couple in question. There was some confusion regarding the room they wanted but I had difficulty making them understand that someone else had booked the room they wanted and they would have to have another room. I am sure they wanted the Trowle suite and they had requested it but we must have booked it incorrectly. It was obviously our fault but we could do nothing about it as we already had guests in the room.It was a no win for me as the mistake had been made and we could not put it right. If they would like to get in touch they can have next year's anniversary in the Trowle suite ,complimentary.

PS. I know the date,so anyone trying to get a free stay other than Mr and Mrs X will be unlucky......

Lovely place

from Silvercake
I am a weary business traveller used to the mediocre. This hotel is a gem and could teach many bigger hotels a thing or two.
Very friendly reception - I was shown to my room and offered help with my bags. The room was clean, and had individual character. Room service was prompt and the food fantastic.
Streets ahead of the dreadful Fieldways where I stayed on my last visit to the area.I would happily stay here again for a private visit.

Amazing...Can not fault

from Loopylalaland
I stayed at this hotel while visiting our Trowbridge office. As I booked last minute and didnt read any reviews I did not know what to expect. I really can not fault this hotel at all. The welcome I recieved was warm and friendly, the receptionist even walked me around the building and explained the history of the place. I stayed in room 15, which was in the oldest part of the building. It had recentally been renovated, the bathroom was lovely, the bed was comfy and the view was great. I can not comment on the food as I ate out, but from the menu it sounded lovely and seemed reasonably priced. I can not wait to go back, I have reccomended the hotel to all my colleagues and I am planning to take my boyfriend for a weekend away.

a lovely stay

from emah
I found this hotel on Tripadvisor and after doing some exploring, rang and booked on the phone. when i checked out, there was some confusion about the rate (they charged me an extra 20 pounds a night) but i had the confirmation email and the problem was fixed directly. this is a really lovely hotel, and i recommend it! i had booked a room in the main house, and it looked gorgeous, with a fabulous bathroom and views out over a paddock, but the bed was agonising (I have an iffy back and like a soft padding on my mattress) but after I spoke to the owner about it, he put me in one of the new units in the converted barns for the rest of my stay and that bed was fantastic, so i was really pleased. i was there for a week for a cycling holiday and it made a great hub; i biked along the canal to devizes one day, up to laycock and chippenham and down to bath another day, and one day i caught a train to salisbury and did a big loop on the wiltshire cycle track. its a 5 minute bike ride in one direction to the kennet avon canal (and another 10 minutes to the bradford train station, and a 5 minute ride (20 minute walk) in the other to trowbridge train station, so the location can't be beat, the breakfasts are pretty standard english breakfast fare so i didn't bother eating in the restaurant during the evenings, but the staff are really friendly and courteous, and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to others.
