Historical Traveller Reviews of The Chine Hotel Bournemouth

Lovely stay!

from Jackfy
Myself and my wife have just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable stay at the Chine Hotel in Bournemouth. we had our doubts on arrival as it appeared there was no where to park the car but enquiring at reception prompted an offer of valet parking and directions to ample parking.

Reception is quite dark in style and does not offer the best first impression but the greeting made up for that.

We had a beautiful room with a balcony overlooking the sea nd the lovely gardens.

Dinner is a treat with food that far exceeded our expections. We stayed 3 nights and ate on the last as the Restaurant decor seemed dated and we wrongly assumed the food would be too. I wish we had discovered this on our first evening.

The service is excellent and the staff willing which more than compensates for the odd tired parts of the hotel.

We look forward to a return visit.

Great facilities, poor service

from skyjockey99
We stayed here with three young kids (3,5,6) for a few days in August. The facilities were superb and the child-friendly thinking spot on: the room (in the annex opposite) was huge, had a vast master bedroom (which became a playroom too), and seperate bunks in joined room within suite - and at a very reasonable price. Children's meals are free and served at 5.30, and there is a great kids club above the restaurant/bar a few times each day and whilst the parents have dinner - and the girls who run it do like kids and are imaginative (note you can't leave kids under a certain age - which stuffed us and we had to stay with them then). The outside pool is great and warmed just off cold, so it's not tepid but doesn't freeze you if you've been playing in it for hours. The indoor pool is stylish, and the small gym well equipped. With a jacuzzi and hot tub there too, you're made. The gardens are superb, a real delight to sit in or play adventure games around, with a dedicated play area for kids that grown ups can easily avoid if they wish. The beach is 2 minutes walk though the garden, and is spacious and sandy. And finally the little land train runs every 20 mins to Bournemouth, about a mile away (useful as parking at the hotel can require creativity). HOWEVER most of the staff seemed unable to follow the slowest clearest request and whilst well-meaning, seemed not to have a clue. We had a whole series of problems that ruined a great place.

The room service meal on the first night was poor - all 3 courses served at once, warm wine brought afterwards, no corkscrew. A simple request for a jug of warm chocolate made with milk for hungry kids late on was met with steaming hot chocolate made with water. A request by the pool for ham and mustard sandwiches without mustard ended up with the most mustardy sandwiches imaginable and took an hour to get sorted. Strange yellow water in the bath took three visits to sort and was diagnosed as sand we'd brought in..... hmmm. I think not - but it cleared later (but after we'd abandonned having a bath and all went off feeling grubby and sea salt washed still). And finally they refused to serve us at the pool until we closed the account on the last day and paid the bill - but took an hour to tell us and demanded my partner go to reception (whilst still in her bikini) to sort it. Being an ex England rugby player and solicitor, she did, and I suspect they regretted it.... But the manager did finally apologise and reduce the bill on account of all these matters.

So, Chine management, PLEASE train your staff to care and listen. I know they are all foreign or under 20, but you have to sort it out or continue to put people off. Would we go back? Yes, but using it as a base and sorting our own facilities as far as possible.

Still good

A little worried when I saw Chine in the Best Western brochure, but still has the small family chain feel (they run the rather posher hotels at Sandbanks). This is our 6th visit over roughly 6 years, and still rates as one the best, particularly for those with small children. Food good quality (including for the kids), facilities excellent - the outdoor pool is a suntrap and was actually almost too warm!
Only downside was the feel that they had to do "entertainment" on Friday and Saturday night. Just too loud - but to be fair, the manager looked equally as cross as muttered to me "we're not having him again!" That said there is a separate lounge to escape it. Top tip - the rooms in the West Wing are huge and newly renovated.

The best of Best Western...

All in all a simply fantastic hotel - I stayed three times this summer: once as a family break, once a short break with my daughter and grandson and lastly a similar break with my husband and each time was delighted with my experience.
Each room for each stay was clean, well-furnished, bright and spacious - the two seaview and balcony rooms were particular highlights, as was the unexpected four-poster bed!
The facilities at the hotel are excellent and the food was magnificent throughout. Also, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel has great facilities for families with children (including a play gym), a fully equipped gym, indoor and outdoor pools, an outdoor hottub and a Roman Spa with sauna and jacuzzi. It is well located and the seafront is only a short walk down through the beautiful hotel gardens.
We would recommend this hotel very highly indeed and will be certain to return ourselves.

Wonderful weekend

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a wonderful weekend here. We booked a standard double room, and it was comfortable and a good size, with a balcony and sea view. The bathroom was well appointed and the shower was one of the best I've known in a hotel. The gardens are really pleasant and relaxing. Breakfast and dinner were both excellent (we had a DBB package). There were always lots of staff around, especially in the restaurant.

There were only minor gripes: the outdoor pool (heated) was too warm for swimming. I can see that parking could be a problem, although we found a space in the car park.

Very disappointed

We booked a couple of days before on the internet and telephoned immediately prior to booking to confirm that we could have a king-size bed (am very tall!). Telephoned in afternoon on day of arrival to advise of our late arrival and re-confirmed king-size bed. Arrived at 9pm - extremely difficult to park within 300m of hotel. At check-in confirmed king-size bed - told "we have given you very big room" in 'european' English. The room truly was enormous - it slept six, including bunk beds. Had a small double bed and although clean was in ageing 1970s style and was very much in need of refurbishment. On our return to reception we were told that it was the last room in the hotel - we assume someone else had complained and been allocated ours. Also as this took time to sort out, it was too late to eat in the bar, the restaurant was closed for a wedding and we were told they could only send a sandwich to our room. This was not a good start to a romantic weekend away to celebrate my birthday. The receptionist however, did make an effort and telephoned around and transferred our booking to another hotel in the group where we had an excellent weekend.

Cracking outdoor hot tub!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Booked the Chine for my hen weekend, wondering, at the price we paid on laterooms, what it would be like! Firstly my fears about it being 'out of town' were unfounded (it was £3 in a taxi to town and c.£1 on the shuttle train from the beach at the back of the hotel) and in fact we were better off being in Boscombe, than Bournemouth itself. It was quieter during the day and it had lots of facilities missing from the town centre hotels. We loved the outdoor pool which was like a bath compared to the sea and we also tried out the indoor pool. Best bit however was the really hot outdoor hot tub. We hogged it for ages (it was raining so no-one else wanted it) but even in the rain, you couldn't resist it!
Restaurant has a gorgeous view and the food was unbelievable in quality and choice. My friend and I asked for something that wasn't on the menu and they cooked it for us. They even stored our bottle of champagne in the fridge for us, so we bought lots of drinks at the bar later on.
Only downside were the beds, tad on the soft side, my mum has stayed here too and also had this problem, but it sounds like they are amending this with the refurb. All credit to The Chine, we had a marvellous time and I would certainly recommend this hotel, it is worth encouraging.

Winter Break

from BoldlyGO
We booked a family room for two nights and got one of the newly refurbished rooms in the West Wing of the hotel. It was very large and had an alcove for the bunk beds. The view over the Chine was fine, and in the summer we could have watched the outdoor pool in action. The indoor pool is fine, albeit small and there is a gym. The outdoor hot tub under the Dorset night is good fun. Food was ample and the restaurant has a lovely position overlooking the sea. There is a good activity room for up to 8 year olds in the basement, and a pool room for older children to use. The staff seem friendly and mostly capable, although the reception was not as efficient as it might have been.

This is part of the FJB chain which includes the Harbour Heights and the Sandbanks Hotel, and you can book spa treatments at the other hotels should you wish to do so.

The hotel is in a quiet setting, and an easy walk to Boscombe Pier. The parking at the hotel could get very busy in the summer months, so this is something to be aware of.

Great Family Hotel in wonderful location

from charliesmum
Got a great rate at lastminute and then got upgraded to a huge sea view room on arrival - with no extra charge for our 7 year old.

The room was fine, nothing too exciting, but large and clean. Bathroom was spacious and clean with good size bath and strong shower.

The hotel bar was pleasant and breakfast was great. Only real disappointment was the dinner which was very average.

The real seller for this hotel is it's grounds and location. There are several beautiful gardens and areas to explore, along with a pond and waterfall, children's playground and putting. The lovely sandy beach at Boscombe is five minutes walk down through the hotel gardens.

The hotel has a large, clean, heated outdoor pool, with comfortable sun loungers and waiter service. The indoor pool and spa are relatively new and very nicely done.

The hotel caters really well for children, with indoor and outdoor play areas, a really good 5.30 pm children's buffet tea and supervised kids activities during the school holidays.

Highly recommended!

What a find

from Bob1949
We had to make a last minute booking for an overnight in Bournemouth so went onto Laterooms. What a deal the Chine turned out to be. We got an excellent rate including an evening meal. The room was large and overlooked the gardens with a partial sea view. The restaurant was delightful and both dinner and breakfast the next morning were very good. The setting with the hotel gardens was most pleasant and it was situated in a pleasant part of town. All in all a very enjoyable stay and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel. Normally we stay at the Royal Bath when in Bournemouth but next time we will be heading for The Chine if we can get another good rate.
