Changed to another room, which was larger but clean and acceptable. Decided to make most of stay as location of hotel is excellent.
Had dinner at Thai restaurant - this was empty and therefore no atmosphere. Paid £79 for an OK meal - nothing better than takeaway.
Returned from day out on following day to find our car had been moved to another parking space in hotel car park.
Eventually, after a lot of asking, ascertained from hotel owner that while we were out, he had entered our room, searched through our belongings and taken the car key, moved the car and returned the key to the room. All without our knowledge or permission. Presumably we were not expected to object.
This person was neither apologetic, ashamed or embarrassed about his actions. He offered several excuses for what he had done, none valid or acceptable. I believe that he had moved the car to accommodate a 4x 4 owned by a friend or regular customer. We had formed the impression on the night before that the hotel seemed to serve as a meeting place for friends and family of employees.
We did not wish to complete our stay at the hotel after this, and booked out immediately, offering to pay for one night's stay less the £20 deposit paid to the booking agency. This was repeatedly refused, despite my having paperwork proving room rate and deposit paid. The reception staff, manager and wonder had paperwork also, but did not seem able to understand the principle of deducting the room rate less deposit paid. After some heated exchanges the manager of the hotel accepted £30 and we were given a handwritten receipt for the money. This was not the end of the story .......... Meanwhile the owner blocked our car in with his and refused to move his car unless we paid a further £15.
Unbelievably, all this took place in front of a police officer that did nothing to help us, saying it was a civil matter. The owner of the hotel said that he had searched our belongings and moved the car because he could. Eventually my husband paid the further £15 and we were "allowed" to leave. One night's stay at this appalling hotel cost us £70 instead of £50. We were forced to pay an extra £20, which we did not owe to the hotel in order to get away from it.
How are people allowed to continue to run businesses in this way without being accountable to someone? Please be wary of this hotel.
