Would not recommend!

from Scallie
I'm afraid to say the problems started at the outset. For one thing the car park is tiny and badly laid out. Luckily I managed to squeeze in creatively, but I have no idea where I'd have left the car otherwise.

When I booked the hotel I specifically requested a non-smoking room, but despite this I was shown to a smoking room which had by far the strongest smell of smoke I'd ever experienced in any hotel. I can only assume a 40-a-day guest had just checked out, as the place reeked and the open windows were doing little to combat it. It was so bad it was beginning to irritate my asthma and there was no way I'd have been able to spend a whole night in that atmosphere, so I called down to reception to request a change. I was asked to return to reception so they could assign me another room.

On reaching reception (cases in tow), I was told that there were no other rooms available at the hotel so I would have to stay in the room I'd been given. I pointed out my non-smoking request on my booking form, but they were resolute that the hotel was fully booked. I was about to return to the room to start ringing round other hotels, when they decided they could allocate a non-smoking room to me after all, which I gratefully accepted. The room I was allocated to was bright, welcoming and very nice (desipte being stiflingly hot and having a tiny bed).

If that had been the end of the matter I'd probably have scored the hotel as two or three stars, but unfortunately my experience was further tainted as I managed to get virtually no sleep in my nice new room. The room was located directly above the function suite which was hosting a very loud wedding that spilled out into the garden below the window, a fact which reception really ought to have warned me about when they were re-allocating my room. The music that was thumping up through the floorboards was so loud that I could not hear the television (set at a reasonable volume) over the din. Thankfully the music stopped at around 12.30, but considering I had to get up to drive to Cornwall for a business meeting the next day I had been counting on getting all the sleep I could get. In any case the disco was followed by the general noise of guests in the garden for another hour or two before they all dispersed. I tried closing the windows, but the stifling heat became unbearable.

Plans to delay my journey so that I could get some extra sleep were also thwarted: the guest occupying the room above mine got up at 4.30am and, because of the terrible soundproofing and extremely squeeky floorboards, I could hear nothing but the sound of them showering and generally moving and thumping around for the next hour.

All in all a bad experience. Luckily there are plenty of other hotels to choose from in the area!

Decent, functional hotel

from pelethar
Don't be fooled by the atrocious looking exterior - this is a perfectly decent little hotel. The room was clean, comfy and spacious. Breakfast was OK. Location is excellent. Car park is too small and we couldn't fit our car in, but there was ample parking on nearby streets.

A Hotel of Two Halves

from Wordweaver
We visited this hotel waiting to be unimpressed, having read the previous reviews.

But I have to say that what we found is a hotel of two halves. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the food is good for a hotel of this standard, and the public areas are clean and comfortable.

We stayed for one night with a large group of friends for a birthday celebration. The staff couldn't have been kinder or more efficient. They are obviously well-accustomed to dealing with large parties, and the service was better than I've encountered in hotels of a much higher overall standard. The breakfast was plentiful and well-presented.

But the other half is the rooms. Eight of them have been recently refurbished and I can't comment on those. Our room had the air of a decaying duchess - it had seen better days, there was a lot of chipped paint, the curtains were hanging off their hooks, and the bathroom had the ubiquitous dripping tap, rusting pipes and tatty flooring. There were five shower caps and no soap other than a squeegie on the wall by the basin and some tiny sachets of shower gel.

The towels and bedlinen were spotless and the bed was comfortable. The TV worked fine. I was surprised to find a hairdryer and we could make our own tea and coffee. Unlike many five star hotels in which I've stayed, there was plenty of tea, coffee, chocolate, milk and biscuits.

Comments from friends included more curtain hooks hanging off, kettles with too short a lead, and a general air of could-do-better . But everyone was in agreement that this place has great staff, surprisingly good food and the potential to be a very much better hotel than it is at the moment.

So much of what is wrong would be easy to fix with a little more attention to detail, a good handyman with a copious supply of curtain hooks, washers, Marigolds and an industrial quantity of Cillit Bang.

If you're planning a big celebration on a tight budget, you'll get excellent value here. If you're squeamish, bring your own Marigolds and Cillit Bang.

Excellent staff

During my stay at the Quality Hotel Bournemouth I found it very pleasant due to the exquisit food, the helpfull staff and the newly refurbished room that I was given. I would defenitily go back there again but maybe next time in the summer as the only down fall of my stay was the weather! Thank you very much for a birthday to remember!

Good value

Stayed at the venue recently and had previously read the reviews some of which were a bit worrying. However having stayed at the venue I would rate it as good value for money. Well positioned with regard to shops etc and excellent staff willing to assist with any requests.

Mould on wall in room, refurb urgently required!

from StarTurn
I stayed at this hotel in October 2004 and found it rather good value for money on that visit. However, I have just stayed one night there and will never be tempted to return.

We decided to stay again as it is in a good location near the front, a pleasant stroll down the hill to the beach, and has a swimming pool.

Staying out of season I did not expect this to be a bad choice of hotel. However, there were several problems.

1) The first room we were allocated was a smoking room (not ideal with a 2 year old). The wallpaper was shabby and peeling, the carpet stained, the furniture scuffed and chipped and a very poor standard of bathroom.

2) We complained about the room and were given another to see. This was barely better, but at least non-smoking. It wasn't until we had unpacked and my son lay on his bed I noticed the black mold on the wall by his bed. It was right next to where he would sleep! Take a look at the photo! There was also mold above the window. The bathroom in this room was also very, very tired, with mouldy dirty sealant, hairs and dirt and stains around the plugholes.

3) We chose the hotel because of the pool - which is a nice pool except it was very cold yesterday. I couldn't keep my two year old in it much longer than 15 minutes. The male changing rooms had debris, hairs & fluff underneath the radiators indicating the floor had not been properly washed down.

4) The breakfast was ok and the staff were helpful.

5) On check-out I complained to the duty manager about our room, the mold in particular. He apologised but I didn't feel he was really that bothered and he wouldn't give us a discount. I said the mold must have been there for several months and nothing had been done. This is a health hazard and I said I would be escalating my complaint!!

Overall I was disappointed by our stay and will not return there. The night before our stay we stayed at the Quality Hotel in St Albans, and this lived up to its name. There is no 'Quality' whatsoever about the hotel in Bournemouth, and Tony Hancock will be turning in his grave!!

utterly dreadful

from A TripAdvisor Member
I attended in March for one night with group of friends. My lasting impressions are as follows:

1. Decor was tired, and bathroom fitments in particular required upgrade and, more importantly, a thorough clean. The shower looked like a museum piece.

2. There was no lock or restriction on the bedroom window. It was a single-glazed unit which was free to swing open in the breeze (with a sheer drop of some 60 or so feet to the pavement below). Health and safety is not their strong point.

3. We attended on a saturday night. The bar was closed by 11pm, with the night porter offering bottled beer for sale over the reception desk at £3 a bottle. I would be interested to know whether this is authorised hotel policy.

4. I found myself having an argument with one of the catering staff at breakfast, who initially refused my request for a top up of coffee, insisting that a single pot of coffee 'should do for two people'.

Poor service, poor accommodation, utterly devoid of any redeeming features. Avoid.

A Bit Tired

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Quality Hotel Bournemouth for one night during March 2005. Our double room was comfortable enough, but the decor was very tired. The lock on one of the windows was missing. The wardrobe doors did not close properly, and some of the furniture had handles missing. There was peeling wallpaper in the bathroom. The staff were polite. Breakfast was perfectly adequate. Good location and off street parking.

Refurb urgently needed

from prospero1b
Attended conference in Bournemouth and stayed here. Was just about acceptable for that purpose. Room was tired and urgently needed a refurb. Bathroom dreadful - chipped tiles, bath, washbasin, etc. Could not view TV from bed! Public rooms adequate. Breakfast OK. Could not recommend.

Great Place to Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have just come back from Bournemouth after staying at the Quality Hotel. From the moment we entered the hotel the reception staff were welcoming and did everything throughout our stay to help us, which was excellent as we had a young baby with us. The rooms were spacious and very clean. The food at the hotel was excellent value and there was plenty of choice for the evening meal, well worth staying for.Definitely go again.
