What a horrible experience!

Worst hotel I and several fellow travellers have stayed in!! Dirty, noisy and small rooms. The food so bad we don't want to be reminded. Staff pretty much useless, mixing up guests rooms and bills and not knowing much about anything! Don't go there!!

Amongst the many hotels that we have been to, we found the staff that dealt with us at this one to be the unfriendliest we have ever experienced. The surly woman that checked us in at reception spoke to us in a reprehensible manner, and never uttered any such phrases that resembled 'good afternoon', 'welcome to our hotel', 'we hope you enjoy you stay' etc. When we arrived back in the evening, the young man on duty opened the door to let us in, stared at us unwelcomingly, and never said a word, not even to reply to my 'good evening'.

The room we stayed in was called a 'conservatory double'. I was intrigued to find out what it would look like. However, it turned out that the side of the hotel my room was on had been extended in the most economical way possible. The roof was made of cheap plastic that you'd use to cover a barn or shed. Presumably, they'd used the word 'conservatory' as a pretentious attempt to distract your mind from their shoddy workmanship, and make the rooms sound somehow special!

I can't imagine that this hotel can have any returning visitors, and I suppose it wasn't any surprise that this was one of the few hotels in Bournemouth that had any vacancies in the summer peak-season. So my final message is stay away from this hotel!

Comfortable at the Connaught.

from brevie
The hotel was far better than we expected, the staff friendly and efficient. The breakfast was outstanding. We will certainly return there next year.

Little Gem

An extremely pleasant experience. Spotlessly clean. Very personable and helpful staff. One of the comfiest beds I have slept in for a long time and a delicious dinner to boot. Greatt value and only a few blocks from the beach.

worst service ever, they could do nothing right

Dont stay at this hotel for anything other than a bed for the night, the worst hotel we have ever stayed at for service.
we arrived to discover our room wasnt ready at 2.30pm, and once we got to room a painter an decorator knocked with paint.
We chose to upgrade to the honeymoon suit to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary, Big Mistake. The four poster bed didnt exist as advertised and paid for. the jacuzzi bath didnt work. the room service terriable over 2 hours for a sandwich.the breakfast arrived with no milk or sugar for tea, no plate to eat boiled egg off, not enough cutlery, no butter. tv wasnt tuned in so only had 2 channels.
not one member of staff wished up happy anniversary when i booked directly with hotel and told them it was a special occasion.
they made no effort whatsoever and couldnt even get the most simple of requests right.

it may look like a nice hotel but we would hate for anyone else to experience what we did and were very dissapointed.

Also Blakes restuarant is very old fashioned and the menu very basic, not as advertised.
the only thing that i liked was the indoor swimming pool, the outdoor one is quite small.
not worth the money.

i would not recomend to anyone.

No hot water, no lights! Developing World experience at developed world price!

My colleague and I stayed at this hotel for a conference in mid-June (12th-14th). We were placed in the 'lodge' at the back of the hotel.
We had booked double rooms each, but got twins - I was not impressed as my partner joined me for the trip. My bathroom was very shabby, the shower head looked like it hadn't been changed or cleaned since the 70's.
On the first morning, I turned on my mono-squirt of a shower to find that there was no hot water. I contacted reception who said that they were aware of it and had a boiler man sorting the problem. However, after breakfast (which was actually rather good, despite the looks of sheer misery on the face of the staff members) I asked reception again and they said that the boiler man hadn't even arrived. I had to attend an all-day conference without a shower or hair-wash...
That evening, we found that the lights didn't work in the main part of the room - only in the conservatory section which had no curtains (the curtains were between the room and the conservatory, so we had to block off the only light that worked!)..again the reception staff seemed quite vague and didn't apologise.
I contacted the hotel regarding this complaint and they did apologise along with an offer of 2 nights stay at half price at the full published rates - £127 per night! I had to decline this as it is out of my price range and I really have no plans to re-visit Bournemouth any time soon due to a very full diary...

Awful

from MatK_Hants
Over our short stay, we experienced long waits for any type of service in the bar and restaurant, dirty crockery, cold drinks (ie cold coffee) and late opening of hotel facilities. Our experience was further compromised by a small bedroom, a dingy bathroom and room service that seemed intent on cleaning the room when it was most convenient to them, rather than the guest.

At no time, did any of the staff ever apologise for the shortcomings in their service. When attempting to discuss the issues with the hotel manager, we were met with a wall of argument and denial of any of the issues, and a refusal to credit back a cold cup of coffee which had been served to us. Quite clearly, the staff take their lead from management, and it is therefore no surprise that they are so complacent and arrogant in their attitude towards their guests

Tale of two hotels. One terrible and one ok I hear!

Hi,

I stayed at this hotel for 1 night for business. Or to be clearer, I stayed next door to this hotel. I think the reason for mixed reviews here is that the hotel has an 'annex' or lodge they call it.

This lodge is akin to a hostel - the double room was small, grubby and very old, with a tiny dark bathroom. The lift didn't work and on two mornings (my colleague was there the day before) they had no hot water. It is more like an unrenovated 70's building, not like the nice old ivy covered building next door.

My colleague was moved into the main hotel, and said he had a wonderful room, newly renovated, 4 poster bed, even a dressing room! But in the 'lodge' for the same price you get a small old miserable room. I did ask to be moved, but was told the main house was booked up by people who specifically requested the main house. I can understand why! It's a case of the first time you come, they treat you terribly - but tempt you to come back and spend more money next time. I just find that leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Anyway, I would never stay here again and was just completely disappointed. It's very expensive for what I believe are hostel quality rooms. It is not the staffs fault, but I hate being lied to and I felt I was taken for a fool in showing up to this nice looking hotel, and being shunted next door like a second class citizen.

So - I would agree with the half of reviews on this site that say avoid at all costs! I hate places that treat their customers with such contempt and will happily charge the same amount of money for wildly different levels of quality.

Good luck and happy travelling.

Very friendly

A great hotel where the staff were super friendly and helpful.
Good facilities, especially the indoor pool.
Our very comfortable room had just had a makeover and the bathroom was quite stunning.
Excellent breakfast, fresh and loads to choose from.

Brilliant Weekend

from DCliffin
We and three other couples stayed at The Connaught for a weekend in March 2007.
We were celebrating 3 birthdays and 50 years of friendship. The hotel staff were at all times extremely considerate and helpfull, very polite and friendly.
Three of our rooms were standard, they varied a little in size and decor, all were very clean and comfortable, it seemed like they are in different stages of refurbishment ie; some more updated than others but all very nice. The Superior room had a larger bed, a small balcony and a little more space. The only thing missing as far as we were concerened was a fridge! But when we requested an ice bucket for our celebratory bottle of champagne we were given one straight away.
We chose the bed breakfast and evening meal package, which meant that the evening meal cost us £15 per head per night. The food was excellent and if we decided to choose from the A la carte menu we were only charged the very small difference.
The hotel also gave us a bottle of champagne with our meal because we had a birthday.
I would definately stay at The Connaught again and would recommend it, we couldn't understand why it has only 3 stars.

Helpful staff

This hotel is very old fashioned but suits me as I stay here for Business purposes. But last week I left all my toiletries behind when I returned to Nottingham, I thought I would never see them again but the hotel found them and posted them back to me at their cost. Thanks

Great Location

from Emyr66
This hotel is an "annex" to the Connaught next door. The location was very good, 10 mins walk to shops, beach, gardens etc. However, the room was small and the bathroom was pokey to say the least! Hotel staff were friendly and helpful and the leisure facilities were second to none. Good breakfast served by very friendly staff. We paid £185 for 2 nights B&B and thought it wasn't value for money. For that price we would have been better off staying and a Travelodge or Holiday Inn Express
