Room small and basic but adequate for a short stay, staff friendly and very helpful. Car park very useful in a busy part of the city.
Dirty and damp

This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The room and bathroom was moldy and dirty. There was a lot of condensation running down the wall onto the beds. The final straw was the blood and stains on the bed and things crawling in the carpet.
The Boltonia was OK

The Boltonia seemed a nice little hotel to which one is committed to paying the full fee once a booking is made, though only the deposit is taken at that stage. It was clean enough and offered all expected facilities to a clientele predominantly of couples in and around their sixties. The staff all seemed happy and keen to help - quickly replacing the out of date milk thimbles, re-attaching the LCD Freeview television to the wall and supplying a second set of towels. The full English breakfasts were good, although guests really are not permitted to help themselves to the cereal.
On the down side it was sometimes difficult for us to sleep in our forty eight inch "double" bed with the room so hot (on a rainy April night) and the plumbing in the next room so loud. The on site parking was on a blocking others in and leaving the keys with the land lady basis, which I was not altogether comfortable with.
To end with a joke:
"I say, I say, I say; what is the difference between a single room and an economy double ?"
"An economy double has two people staying in it."

Room basic, no telephone, also hot and stuffy. No air con, or cooling fans provided in bedrooms in hot weather. A fan heater was provided when asked for although had difficulty in getting fan to work.
In the bathroom there was neither a window or natural ventalation. Toilet was not cleaned daily. The plug did not hold water whilst trying to use sink to wash! Room housekeeping of very poor standard. Coffee ring marks on shelves for the duration of our stay.
Not able to serve youself to breakfast cerial. Also a coffee pot was non existant in Boltonia. You could have a pot of freshly brewed tea, but unfortunately you had to have coffee from a vending machine!

Pleasant, clean, family-run. Walking distance to promenade and Tower and town centre. Parking limited at hotel. Room adequate and functional. No phone. Ample storage. Breakfast excellent and efficiently served in cheerful dining room. Optional pre-booked fixed-price evening meal served early at 5 p.m. (which enables sorties afterwards), which was of good quality and reasonably priced. Helpful and cheerful staff. Room valeting not so hot.
All-in-all good value for money.
