Ok so first of all do not believe all of the reviews on this website. I have stayed in many 5* hotels in the past, and was very unsure when my friend told me she had booked this hotel. I even went to the extreme of packing my own towels and bed linen. This hotel is actually pretty good for £60 for a family room. The bedroom was immaculate and so was the bathroom a huge power shower and comfortable beds. 1 thing i would say is make sure you ask for a refurbished room, my friends stayed in an un refurbished room and it was like stepping back in time. I cannot comment on the food as i did not eat anything here. When i arrived back from a night out in Birmingham the receptionist was very helpful ordering me fast food and it was even delivered to my room!!! I would defiantly stay here again.

Worst hotel I have ever stayed in.
I decided to book this hotel as it had a gym and swimming pool. When I arrived at reception I was told that these facilities had been closed down. When complaining to the manager about this, she offered £5 off the hotel bill. I couldn't believe it, false advertising on the hotel website and the manager is giving me 5 quid off, what a joke. I then went to the hotel room, the carpet was old and stained, the bathroom had dirty limescale in it, mattress was stained yellow with the duvet, disqusting. I would not recommend anyone to stay here.

Now that their website says they have spent 3 million improving this place I wondered if I might stay there again but when I read the reviews on this site it sounds like it hasn't changed at all since I wrote my letter of complaint in 2003.

19th November 2003

Customer Complaints Dept
Quality Hotels

Dear Sirs,

I felt compelled to write and complain about the appalling standard of service, food and accommodation at the so-called Quality Hotel in Hagley Road Birmingham where I have spent the last two nights (Monday 17th & Tuesday 18th November, Room 136) whilst on business in Birmingham, accompanied by my partner.

On the first night I tried to make a phone call using the payphones in the lobby but the message “call barred” was displayed on the screen. When I enquired at reception I was told there was a problem with the phones, although no “out of order” sign had been attached to the phones, and the nearest public payphone was a two minute walk up the road. In the end I crossed the road to the Thistle Hotel (where the staff were courteous and helpful) to make my call. The surroundings were far nicer than the Quality Hotel and the room prices were comparable, if not cheaper.

Also on the first night I enquired at the reception desk about using the phone line in my room to check my emails using my own internet connection on my laptop. I was told that I was able to do this but when I tried I was unable to connect. I rang reception and asked if there was a problem with this line as well as the phones in the lobby. The receptionist informed me that usually a credit card had to be imprinted at reception before the line was activated but she would activate the line for me now and I should call at the desk in the morning. At no time did she inform me of the cost and I read in the literature provided in the room that “Internet access costs 12p per minute”.

On the first morning we were disturbed by the chamber maid knocking at all the doors down the hall including ours at about 8.30am.

At breakfast the food was below the standard that I would expect from a hotel which charged £152 for a 2 night stay. The hash browns were cold, hard and dry, several of the dishes were empty, the tables were filthy from the previous occupants and those that had been re-laid were not fully equipped with cutlery and crockery. When we asked for anything the staff were surly and disinterested. Guests who required toast would have to stand by the toaster and make it themselves.

When we arrived back at the hotel at about 6pm on Tuesday night the main lift in the lobby was out of action and I had a long walk to an alternative lift carrying a heavy laptop bag.

When we reached our room we found that most of the towels had been removed and my partner telephoned reception to request that towels be delivered as we both wanted a bath. Over an hour later the towels had not arrived so I had to phone reception again. This time the towels arrived, but the woman who brought them said she had to come in and count how many towels were there before she could leave any more!

On Wednesday morning at around 8.30am we were disturbed again by the maid who knocked on the door and before I could answer that I was not dressed she had already opened it! She quickly closed it again and went away. I was glad that I had not paid the exorbitant fee of £10 to have extended the check out time by 1 hour for a “lie in” as it is advertised at reception. Clearly the intrusive and over-zealous chamber maid would have made a peaceful lie in impossible.

At breakfast the tables were not being cleared and re-laid again and we had to stand and wait for a table. There was no grapefruit juice in the jug and when my partner managed to attract the attention of the Oriental waiter to ask for some he just grunted, although he did replenish the jug fairly quickly. The elderly lady at the table next to me was clearly struggling, as was I, to find room on the table as her empty plate and that of her companion were not promptly removed. I was shocked to watch the Oriental waiter deliver clean plates from the kitchen into the warmer and use the palms of both hands on the top plate to press them down. I can only hope that his hands had been scrupulously cleansed before doing this after handling dirty plates and crockery and I was thankful that I was not planning to eat lunch in the restaurant.

When I checked out I was given a bill for nearly £10 for using the Internet, although the literature in the room clearly stated the cost at “12p per minute”. When I challenged the receptionist about this she said the 12p charge was for accessing the internet via the TV, although the information pack in the room did not make this clear and I did not see any instructions for doing so.

All in all we had a most unpleasant stay and I can truly say that I have never stayed in such a low quality downmarket establishment. This is quite the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. I know that this is not representative of the standard in other hotels in your chain that I have used in the past.

I feel that compensation in the form of a replacement 2-day break at another of your hotels or a refund of the cost of the accommodation plus the £10 charged for phone calls would be appropriate in the circumstances. We shall certainly NEVER stay there again. If you are in any doubt as to the accuracy of any statement above may I respectfully suggest that you book into the hotel yourself as an anonymous guest and witness first hand the conditions.

Yours faithfully

P.S. Since returning home my partner has been suffering from acute vomiting and diarrhoea. I am in no doubt that this was caused by the unhygienic conditions in the restaurant and the unsanitary procedures employed by the staff. I am considering making a complaint to the health and safety executive.

I had the misfortune of staying at this hotel. I had booked for 5 nights, but left after 2, it was that bad. My room was shabby and very tired with damaged furniture, the bed was awful, very old and uncomfortable. But worst of all was the food. The website says a la carte, I was given a menu with a choice of just 5 options for the main meal. Even if you are lucky enough to get a refurbed room, you'll still have to put up with the food. Staff were pretty ignorant as well. do not stay there!!!!!!

Public areas a mix of new and attractive and 1960's decor. The room was OK and clearly refurbished. But why spend all that money and not replace the bed? It was at least 5 years old. Loo seat cracked and held together by what looked like sticking plaster! Cannot recommend the evening meal - beef tough, veg over cooked and when I asked what cheese was available on the cheese board I was told by the "Shift Leader" - "well its cheese". In reality it was Stlilton, not bad; Brie, hard and cold from the fridge; cheddar - GRATED!!

I think that the restaurant staff could all do with a trip to the local catering college.

Only go if you have to - like I did as it was a company arranged stay.

I felt I had to write a review. After I booked at the quality hotel on Hagley road I read the reviews and nearly cancelled my reservation. I was dreading going. However, the staff were friendly. The breakfast was nice.. Nothing special but still nice, the hotel was clean and the rooms were basic but clean and nicely presented. I would definitely stay again. It must have had a refurb as it was nothing like described on the reviews. My only advice is book online for cheaper rates. The people in rooms next to ours had paid more than us!

I would not stay here again. The hotel is old fashioned and looks dirty. The room was shabby. The shower curtain was not fastened on properly and consequently, it was difficult to shower without causing a flood. There was no curtain on the bathroom window. Got the feeling they had put us near the workmen because we had made a late reservation and thus a cheaper room rate. There was bed linen in corridors on arrival (early evening) They had given us a hand towel and a bath towel in our room between us. Workmen started work early opposite our room (8am). Only good thing going for it was the breakfast.

From first impressions, the hotel interior is unattractive and old fashioned. The lift has a disgusting red carpet on the walls and the room disgusting bed linen. But the worst part was getting charged £6 for a movie we did not request (the choice was a **** movie and a movie we had already seen at the cinema). We insisted we had not watched it and the reaction from the reception manager was a cocky and arrogant one, who insisted it had to be us as only she had access to the room. It did not make a difference that the time watched was at around 4pm whereas we didn't turn up till 6pm!! A written complaint is on its way to the hotel.
