No frills, but all you need

The Paragon is a faded hotel with character. It could do with some refurbishment, but is very good value for money. Double rooms come with either a bath or a shower, and I recommend taking the bath option as these rooms are much larger.

There is no double glazing, so there is a fair bit of noise from the nearby road, but internal noise from other rooms was minimal. The bed was comfortable, and the room warm, although blankets and sheets are used rather than a quilt. Wardrobe space was limited.

The breakfast was very good, and most of the staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel is in an industrial area, about an easy 15 minutes walk from the town centre.

If you are after a low priced base to enjoy the delights of Birmingham - (the balti curry we had was superb !) then the Paragon fits the bill.

my husbands xmas evening dinner was held at the paragon (all be it a little late)our evening included a nights accomodation.if we hadnt travelled from lincolnshire i think on first sight we may have turned around and gone straight home!foyer scruffy.corridors filthy.staff unpleasant.shoebox room with stained carpet and dirty shower and the evening meal was so awful we didnt even bother getting up to try breakfast.all in all if it wasnt paid for by my husbands company i would be asking for my money back!!

hotel i have stayed at in 25 years of travel , rude unhelpful staff everywhere,shoebox rooms,awful area,no nearby facilities,shower room 4 ft by 3 ft
dirty, unchanged bed, broken draughty window,2 years of dust and stains on 30 year old carpet,'school dinner' style breakfast and meal facilities,overpriced bar
and the whole of the quadrangle of rooms ...(imagine Colditz )stinks of either decaying flesh or cheap disinfectant

DO NOT BE TAKEN IN BY THE PRETTY PICTURES ON THE WEBSITE, THEY ARE A SHAM

I would not stay there for free !!

Where to start - On checking in the reception staff were rude and even started talking about another guest who had asked if they could call him a taxi!

The rooms were had really dirty carpets and the blankets on the beds resembled something I would make my dog sleep on.

The 'ironing room' was located on the high floor which ensured a daily trip up and down the stairs, and I was careful not to trip over the bits of the carpet that werent duck taped down to the floor.

I had no ther option than to eat in the hotel resteraunt, I admit the breakfast was good but the evening meal appeared to be something that had sat in the fridge for a few days before being microwaved!

I had to stay here because of work and no other hotels were available. If you find yourself in the same situation I would advise that you bring a tent or sleep in your car!

Refund Hell

My son held his wedding reception here in July .Certain items were missing from the reception on 30/07/05. IT IS NOW NOVEMBER AND WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR THIS REFUND .The attitude of staff and management is terrible .I have put it in the hands of Birmingham Trading Standards and they cannot understand their attitude .We spent £40000 here and I will not let this go .

The double room is absolutely brilliant ...room service is one of the best i seen so far ..and being in the centre of birmingham for that price u cannot get better .. dont listen to the other comments..

The room was 6ft x 5ft with a small en-suite shower room. I had to put the suitcase in the bathroom. There was no table, chair, wardrobe (just 5 coat hangers above the bed), or draws. The TV was so high up it was painful to watch and the only place to sit was on the bed. Not a pleasant experience. If you can get a room anywhere else, do it!

Me and my two friends went to lapland in Jan this year, we came from dublin and stayed in a hotel near the airport for one night as a stop over from dublin before going to finland which happened to be unavailable when on our return journey, so we took a look on the internet and booked this hotel for our return stop over in birmingham.
I dont think i have seen a scarier place at night, we arrived into birmingham at around 1am and got a taxi over to the hotel, the place was absolutely awful. The staff were rude, there were approx 5 guys standing around in the lobby who seemed to be staff also and for 3 girls arriving in at that time of night we felt extremely intimidated. Then the rooms, we asked for a triple which wasnt available when we arrived so they gave us a double and a single which were approx 20 mins walk away from one another, so needless to say the third of us slept on the floor in the double room. The rooms were dirty, the beds smelled, the shower was thick with dirt, and there were people walking around on the corridors at all hours of the morning-we never slept a wink and left at approx 6.30 in the morning,
i would never ever consider staying in this hotel again and personally i think it is not of any standard at all.

When we checked in there was me and my husband, my 2 children and my mom and dad. It looked ok nothing special but the kids seemed to be excited. The lady on the reception was told twice who we were. When we took the kids to see there room they told me "NO WAY WAS THEY SLEEPING IN HERE" I had just paid £50 to have the living daylights scared out of my kids. What next, me and my hubby went to see our room. My mom and dad went to see theirs. When we saw ours it was like being in our little bedroom, i was quite let down (an understatement). My mom and dad came to ours and laughed. Come and see ours, we had a look and there's was massive (compared to ours). the night came i got into the bed (the best thing in there) I WAS DRUNK. We were there for my hubbys brothers wedding, i fell asleep it was brill. We went down stairs for breakfast yes i thought we were starving and we stayed hungry it was horrible i don't like microwaved bacon!!!!!!! My mom and dad got no sleep there was a generater outside there window so i think i got the last laugh. we were happy to have checked out NO I WOULD NOT STAY THERE AGAIN.

My second stay at The Paragon

The outside of the building is impressive and the lobby is spacious and comfortable. The lifts are fast and efficient. My single room was on the small side 6ft wide by about 18ft long (including the toilet/shower room). The bed was firm and comfortable and the room was clean.

The area is a bit of a trek to get to from New Street but OK with a small amount of luggage. There is a park next to the hotel but I didn't look it over.

I paid £40 which I think was OK given that a full english Breakfast is included. No trouble finding a table at breakfast either.

This is my second stay at the hotel and would stay there again.

The hotel itself was more like a hospital - even had the 'hospital smell'. The rooms were very small and we were not satisfied for the amount we had spent. The door leading through to the next room was open so people could have had access which obviously was not expected.

After 2 hours in the room we decided to leave early and check out. At reception they informed me that they did not take my credit card - which they had already swiped on arrival therefore had my details. Without querying or making a fuss my partner paid in cash and we were free to leave, however a receipt had not been given but at the time all i wanted to do was leave therefore i didn't think to have received one.

Later on in the month i received my bank statement and i had been charged on my account - for a room i did not stay in for the night i was extremely angry at the fact i had paid twice.
After numerous phone calls - none of which were returned and unhelpfull staff and excuses two months later it is still an ongoing process and i have not received my money back.

Birmingham is a Shoppers Paradise The Bullring Shopping Centre is in the centre of everything any shopper needs in Birmingham. You would never be bored. On the main streets surrounding the cebtre, there are some lovely restaurants and cafes for a break.

gay area If you are going to the gay area, which is excellent, I suggest popping in to showbar, it is friendly and they have drag acts.

locatio location location Please ignore any reviews stating that the Paragon is poorly situated, it is not. Whilst its not the most attractive area it is, infact, no more than ten minutes walk away from the bullring shopping area. I am looking at it right now from my room.
